Looking for something....

Well I'm part of a guild on a video game I play and they are wanting me to create a website as they know I have knowledge of running forums and a somewhat kind of website. So we aren't able to afford vBulletin (well not at the moment at least) and we need some kind of forum system. Any suggestions? (If you say phpBB I shall hunt ye down and kill you.) We are looking for free ones so no pay ones please.

It ain't so bad. For a free forum software, it's decent.

Simple Machines Forum is ok http://www.simplemachines.org/

I liked phpBB for years. I have no complaints about it other than I outgrew it and needed subcategories. It was difficult upgrading when you had many hacks.
I don't think there is anything better for the price.
The phpBB community is excellent. There is also www.phpBBhacks.com

They're pretty good boards for free :)

Well you must also understand that we are a board supporting vBulletin. We can not go advise on the use of a competitor.

Yes you can. Your position is unpaid and affiliation is unofficial with vbulletin.

If you tell me its official then I demand support for my hacks...... See my point.

It is the most like vBulletin you will get for a free solution in my opinion. :)

Yeah - It's very similar to vB in alot of ways. You can tell whoever wrote it like the way vB is doing things. I just set up an installation of MyBB for a client last week and it was very easy to work with - Might use it myself on one of my forums that is currently running phpBB (And as a note has been hacked twice since I opened it a couple months ago.)

Invision is not free though :p

Unless you get hold of an older version, or illegal one;) But that's not right... :p

I still reckon XMB is your best bet ;)
