How interested is anybody in this?

I guess I am wondering if it's worth putting the effort into this to allow more features.

Some things that I will NOT add:
The ability the forum owner to set a different style for this forum or to have any admin-type control over it. That would violate the vbulletin license.

As it currently exists, users in certain groups may create one private forum and one public usergroup. The member becomes the group leader and has the ability to approve or deny members.

Admins can also see the hideaway forums.

For this to be worth my effort to release, it needs to be wanted by many people.

I am very.

gaming boards will absolutely need this for their clans.

This also tell everyone the use of secondary usergroups.

Corriewf 07-17-2005 05:40 AM

It would have to be a really active board to support it. The reason being is that either:
a. Members will only post in private forums

or

b. The private forums wont get any attention because of more popular forums

Maybe it would be best if the forums were pruned by a cron job after such and such time without activity, but in that case the usergroup would need to be removed too.

I think if that can be achieved this then this might be practical on some sites. I would give it a shot on mine to test.

I am very interested in this, please continue development. :)

Sounds intruiging :)

As Danny said, yes, please continue :D

I don't see how this is not breaking the license agreement. As you are effectively leasing out the ability to create a subforum.

KevinL 07-17-2005 02:41 PM

I think its a cool idea :)

But how different is this then creating a group, naming a leader of the group and making the permissions so that the leader is in control of the forum? Kinda like here with the premium modifications forums.

I understand what amykhar is trying to do but my question is more towards Deans comment.

We would need a Jelsoft representative to comment on such a feature :ermm:

Honestly though, it is not really "leasing" - This is a Usergroup-based permission, therefore you could in theory enable it for registered members ;) The only possible issue would be if you charged a monthly fee to have a forum :)

I checked with Jelsoft staff before I even started writing a line of code. They said that doing it this way was fine. I'm the cautious sort when it comes to my license. ;)

Good glad to hear it :)

Now, less posting, more coding ;):p

Just curious, why do you say that? These options (different style per forum, and moderator powers per forum) are already built into vBulletin.

I don't think they are essential for this to work, but don't see them as a violation of the license.

Not even that. Many forums host company-sponsored sub-forums, and charge for it.

The only way I can think of (to violate the license) is if this was done as a hosting mechanism, on multiple servers, multiple domains, seperate db's and the like.

For the record, my above post was not a duplicate, they answere different questions in reply to different posts by different members. This post will possibly be merge as well :)

My stand on the style thing is that it's borderline and I don't want to get close to the border.

twoseven 07-18-2005 02:45 AM

amy i'm interested. with the styles you can set them up via admin side anyhow so that isnt a problem

Mapi99 07-08-2007 08:00 PM

I am very much intrested in finding out if its possible to use seperate styles for your pages, can anyone comment on this or can anyone please tell me where i can get in touch with possible jelsoft representatives that can confirm if you are allowed to do this?

Paul M 07-09-2007 01:00 AM

This is an old thread, you really should have started a new one.

Anyway, please explain what you mean by "use seperate styles for your pages".

Amy if you have this available, I could sorely use this - one of my forums has clans that want thier own private forums and I find it tedious to have to set up the public usergroup and forum, I'd rather give the user of creating this on their own. Thanks :)

Sorry for my somewhat late response, Anyway,
Basically im building a forum, which is game related.

Now there will be several forums for diffrent games, and i was wondering if it was possible to edit the colours to match the "Feel" of the game a bit, e.g Quakewars gets red, Bf2142 gets a blue colour scheme.
So i create the multiple forumhome pages, each game gets one, and each page gets a slightly edited style.

If you get what i mean.

You can already set each forum to have a separate style without modifications.

Mapi99 07-11-2007 09:41 PM

Lol. I know but thats what im asking, you cant set it for each forum home page this mod creates. Thats what im asking, is it allowed

cyberphr 07-11-2007 11:05 PM

Reminds me of Strike-Team.net.
Yeah, it would be very useful for integrating into an existing website.
