Is there a Hack for this? If not, I need it! :)

I don't know if this has been done already (Im VERY new to vB) but I would really benefit from this if it can be done.

I would like to make certain forums on the index page to have an image link instead of a text link to the forum. I've attached a picture I made in Photoshop of what it would look like. Thanks for ANY help! :)

not that I know of but there is the Category Icons hack made by LIVE WIRE, and here it is :) https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...category+icons

Yea I've seen that, looks good. That will be my 2nd option if this isn't possible. :) Thanks for the link.

Anyone else think we can make this happen? I would REALLY love to have it! :D

You can do this with condtionals. It's pretty easy too. Create a folder for your images. Name them as follows - forum1.gif forum2.gif etc.

The only condition is that each image must be named with the forumid in the title and each image must be the same type - gif, png, or jpg.

Then, in your level 2 post template, you change the link to use your image instead of the text.

If you want it for only certain forums, the conditionals are more complex, but still doable.

Why not just use <img src="/path/image.jpg" border="0"> [or whatever] as your forum title ? - that's all we did .....

Thanks for the reply! I, however, am terrible with computers to beging with, and I've just started using vB 3 days ago. Is there any way you can write easy-to-follow directions for this whole thing? Empasis on EASY. lmao Tlak to me like I'm a child if ya can. :D hehe

Paul...from what I understand, won't that make the image show up in other places too where it's not wanted? I really only want to see the image on the forum link on the index page, no where else.

Thanks for the help! :)

Like where ? We have been using it for a while - Have you actually tried it, or just dismissed it on what sounds like hearsay ?

shibby2 07-19-2005 05:04 AM

No, I havent tried it on vB, but I've tried it on phpBB a while back. Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't it show up in the breadcrumbs?

Paul M 07-19-2005 05:24 AM

Hmmmm yes, I think it would - ours is a link to another area, so that problem doesn't occur.

Oh well, can't help you any further then.

slim cutty 07-19-2005 05:39 AM

can this be done to put banners in the right side of the category also?

How can I change the collapse image into a banner? This has been done on other sites I just can't seem to do it myself. The site I'm referring to has different images where the collaps .gif is... can anyone help me on this?

thanks

I believe there is a hack for adding images in the category slim.

Shibby2, this is the solution you want. It doesn't require any hacking and is just simple html. The only thing you'll have to do is make the images and put them in a certain path.

Yes, but won't it show up in places I don't want it to? Like the breadcrumbs?

Well I just tried it like that to see what would happen, and it looks good, except that it jsut shows a broken image in the Admin panel, and shows a blank space in the 'forum jump' drop down box. Other than thta, it looks good. :(

SamirDarji 07-23-2005 06:03 AM

Hmm...I'm trying to remember because I did this on the LG Electronics knowledgebase forum. We had little pictures of each of the cell phone by the category name (model number). I believe that it did show up in the breadcrumb. I never had the forum jump go to specific models, so I never knew what it did there.

There's got to be a hack for this somewhere. I know I've seen sites doing exactly what you want. :(
