vB 3.5 Lite !! 0.02 BETA !!

This is a beta version of vBulletin 3.5 lite.

and it is just that. LITE!

There will be updates to this, including better error message support and re-written comon templates.

But for now, its fairly basic, but it gets the job done well

Alright, looks like I got the bugged niiped in the butt, I had copied code and not replaced it with the proper varibles when releasing.

Should be all good to go now (uploading in a moment and sending an email)

Other notes for version 0.2
- Fixed small lack of phrase (hard coded english)
- Removed the table from the navbar (the breadcrumb)
- Updated for (not really, just downloaded from) RC1

Wayne Luke 07-13-2005 12:39 AM

Wow.... talk about sparse. I can understand "LITE" but this is well beyond that. What is the target market here?

PDA or low bandwidth, mostly. I was tring to slimline everything

Overtime I plan to continue development of this to include a plugin to auto switch to the style on identified pda / mobile phone user agents.

and continue the slimlined templates in other places, at least as much as possible, preferably for the usercp (or at least parts).

Chris M 07-13-2005 02:17 AM

Nice style for PDA's Zachery :)

Satan

lordofgun 07-13-2005 02:54 AM

This is awesome. A lot of my users have been asking for somethinbg like this so they don't get caught posting from work...a fancy website is a lot easier to spot.

Zachery 07-13-2005 03:06 AM

I guess I should mention. it does have quick reply support too :) no new thread mode however.

So.. for the future

Quick Thread added
Futuring any other templates that might need to be redone, like pm's etc.
fixing error message pages

Giray 07-13-2005 03:36 AM

Excellent for us admins who also work on the road with our blackberry. :squareeyed:

yinyang 07-13-2005 04:40 AM

excellent. well definitely install for admins and mods only.

Dan 07-13-2005 11:35 AM

Perfect.... I'll try this with my cellphone later using my dev site to see if it looks good :D

[high]* Dan clicks install[/high]

Tony G 07-13-2005 12:25 PM

That's great for accessing through PDA's, maybe even mobiles.

Nice style. :D

flup 07-13-2005 12:59 PM

Very nice for mobiles yeah!

Make the quick thread links ON the index for faster posting (less money for browsing on the site)

Ahhh... Good luck with that. What is the PDA and Mobile access on forums, percentage wise? This isn't a market that I really plan on accomodating for the near future.

jugo 07-13-2005 01:26 PM

OMG!!! Why is this not in the Features Request at VB.COM!!!!

Dude, you are awesome. This is something that SHOULD be in the Product...this is so useful.

Great Job!!!

moley 07-13-2005 07:09 PM

thanks a lot now i'm going to have to upgrade when i get the time :P

Its a growing market, I know that sooner or later I'm going to have a PDA and cell phone for emergencys. I want to be able to check on things, stuff like this helps me in the long run as well :)

theArchitect 07-13-2005 09:09 PM

Love you work. However I found a glitch. I selected a thread and then added a new post. But the new post didn't appear in the thread I had choosen, but a different thread in a different forum.

Very strange.

Dream 07-13-2005 09:18 PM

pretty cool the way the forums with new posts are highlighted green

would be nice to have a link "use default style" somewhere, members can get stuck in that style

Odd, that is why this is in beta, I will take a look into it.

Cool. Once you have looked into that error I will put it up on my board under the style name Lite (beta) and get my members to test it and let you have some more feedback.

SHANE-D-PAIN 07-18-2005 10:32 AM

When will the posting thing be fixed?

It always posts into the very first thread on my forums...

Zachery 07-18-2005 08:10 PM

weird. I don't see why it would do that, I'll try to have a look at it today or tomorrrow before I head out of town

It's 2005. PC based browsers are not the only way to participate online anymore.

Erwin 07-19-2005 04:43 AM

I've got a few users surfing my forums with PDAs. :) I have a PDA-style for it.

SHANE-D-PAIN 07-19-2005 01:45 PM

Has this reply thing been fixed yet?

Don't suppose there is any chance in getting you to release your style Erwin? ;)

Actually I realize that... I am questioning the long-term viability of participating in discussions with a PDA or Cell-Phone and their limited capabilities.

Marco van Herwaarden 07-19-2005 08:11 PM

If you would have said this 5 years back (remember the Nokia Communicator, big device hardly 10% of the capabilities of a modern smallsized phone) i would have agreed.

But more and more phones (and more even PDA/MDA) are turning into full usable computers. Lol even my wife now has a MDA with Windows Mobile, IE, Word, Excel, you name it, you can even still use it as telephone.

True, and I expect that an increasing number of people will be online via a PDA or similar. But I too would question how many would use it for forum participation.

Some will for a time, I think more as a gimmick factor, but they are too much of a hassle to post with. The screen size is what really puts me off. Call me a big monitor snob but...

Though, I am still really keen to get a decent lite skin. I have a number of Unix freaks on my forum and they don't like my bright sparkly graphics (and I don't have a lot compared with some styles). They want plain text and that is all.

Yes but not every user participates. Some may want information or research the answer to a question and a lite skin gives them a fast and easy way to access the forum posts via a mobile device.

No they may not click on a banner ad, but if they find your forum a useful resource, it stands to reason they will refer it or also access from their pc based browser later.

This is a great skin for a particular audience.

This light version has other benefits as well. It is easier for blind users to navigate with their text-to-speech devices.

It is also easier for data-mining scripts to navigate--which enables the building of an automated message gathering and posting application--an OLR.

SHANE-D-PAIN 07-20-2005 09:46 PM

So when will the reply thing be fixed? Im sure it cant be that hard to do...

When that is done then it will be perfect for use while on the bus etc..

Brinnie 07-21-2005 01:06 AM

I just uninstalled it but I like the idea. :)

I hope you continue to develop areas such as the userCP and to show links for the attachment thumbnails. :)

SHANE-D-PAIN 07-26-2005 10:03 PM

*BUMP*

Would like to see the reply box bug fixed then it will be usable! :)

Well there are 100s of styles... probably less than 1% of vB users use a PDA/mobile, or require ultra low bandwidth, but hey, theres only one style [that I can see], or at the very least: less than 1%.

Those statistics match up nicely if you ask me. Not everything has to be for the general audience. :)

Thanks Zac - Nice style, I'll probably install it because the 'lite' style on my site is shameful.

sub_ubi 07-28-2005 04:59 AM

Very interested in this, thanks Zach.

Don't forget the world isn't US (or english-based) only....
for example, I'm in Korea and the no question whateversoever able cell-phone/pda viability.

Some ppl use cell-phones more than their pc and the tech is so advanced now (out here at least....Korea is WAAYY ahead in in the cell market than the US) that cell phone and pcs are comparable on many the most important aspects. Some younger types can actually type FASTER on their cell than on a keyboard :-O...without looking....one hand!). no joke...they had competition on TV just last month.

phone here have high-res screens, 5+ (!) Megap. cameras, 3-D gaming (like virtual fighter level quality), broadcast TV, mp3, movies, internet, commerse, broadband speeds, etc etc....... all on your cellphone....

and available NOW and in HUGE participation and penetration numbers. And big conglomerate companies are eating content up for big $$$$$$ like you wouldn't believe.

in fact, I'd worry that this is TOO simple for phones out here more than the reverse. :-0 but its the right idea....and best to start simple...

PLEASE KEEP AT IT!!!! this is well worth the effort and honesly I'm surprised this was never brought up before!!!! :D :D

if they scoff at 'round here lemme know.. instead I'll help ya reach an appreciatived 10s of millions people on the other side of the world. ;) heh. (I'm so not kidding.)

I can't believe how big the market is, I installed a PDA style a few weeks ago and my users LOVE it. The number of PDA and Smartphone users is higher then a thought and is growing every day.

This is something VB should look into making a feature. :)

You mean the West is not the center of the universe? Slow down or you will confuse people. ;)
