[hide] hack

Adds [hide][/hide] code to your forum to hide the text until an user replied to the topic.

The XML is the new version, ZIP is the old version.

XML contains the product Hide Hack.

Install:
- Just use the products system in vbulletin.

Bugs:
Please report them in my PM or in topic if not so important.

Known bugs in B2:
- Only 1 hide tag per post.

womensden 06-24-2005 02:06 PM

Just curious...

What would this be used for?

flup 06-24-2005 02:24 PM

To hide text untill users have reply'd I think.

If so, it's very usefull, since the current hide hacks work on an amount of posts.

akanevsky 06-24-2005 03:02 PM

Umm... My hack for 3.0.7 already uses the [hide] tag... Maybe it would be easier to change your tag to something [hidenoreply][/hidenoreply]? Or else it would have to be done when I upgrade my hack to 3.5...

Plus, if I were you, I'd make it a mod of an existing hack, instead of a whole new one.

flup 06-24-2005 03:04 PM

I see no need to change his tags.

Since I think noone would see the need to have a hide till reply AND a hide with x posts.

And thereby he can choose his own tags.

//edit;

I've got yours installed btw :)

Well, I kinda figured that....

What I'm saying is Why would you want to?

Not being critical, just asking what kind of uses this would be for?

mholtum 06-24-2005 04:28 PM

So I have to install the style and then the plugin? Forgive me, I am a noob at plugin hacks. Will the hide feature only work in the style you provided?

Yes, but the vB engine can only parse a certain tag in one certain way. So a hide can either work for no reply hide or for X post hide - and that depends solely on which one of the hacks is installed. Unless these are two diff tags, the two hacks are not compatible.

tinjon 06-24-2005 06:12 PM

hey guys, a little more info on how to install it? :) i mean, i can install it but what's the use of the style file?
thanks.

ja3 06-24-2005 07:44 PM

I will add a readme tomorrow :)

It's mainly used for pirate forums, although I'm not really sure how it helps them keep secrets. I've seen it used on legitimate sites for people posting links, but I never understood that either, as the thread quickly becomes nothing but one word replies from people wondering what the link is. :ermm:

Oh well, thanks for the hack.

pauloo 06-25-2005 09:02 AM

Thanks ! work's fine

They use it to prevent people from being leechers only.

You've probably seen the messages like LEECH = REPLY

Just to get the forums active instead of leeching only. :)

tinjon 06-25-2005 07:20 PM

not working for me.

I know that's the idea but every forum I've ever seen it used on ends up with about 20 pages of people posting "Thanks". If you can make it generate useful discussion, more power to you, though. ;)

I need a [hide] tag. Not everyone uses it and I couldn't possibly force people to reply to every thread.

MentaL 06-28-2005 12:29 PM

tags still appear ;(

Markano 07-02-2005 03:55 PM

Can you see the hidden content when you quote somebody

SlaPPiE 07-04-2005 08:46 PM

The tag works for me initially, but upon edit, the tags appear.

tinjon 07-08-2005 03:19 PM

this is such an useful hack, i hope the author will update/fix the problems. *sigh*

ja3 07-11-2005 07:23 AM

ryne661 07-12-2005 12:36 AM

We post, from time to time, questions that we ask our users. Being able to put the answer in there as well, but hide it, would be pretty slick.

For example:

Recent research has indicated that grass grows faster when:
1. You just leave it alone
2. Mow that puppy down to the dirt
3. Miracle Grow, man!
4. All of the above

Then hide the real answer along with the source. :)

SomeName 07-15-2005 02:41 AM

Nice! I'll be coming back for this when we upgrade to 3.5 on our site.

It'll be useful for posting organization history mini-quizzes for our members.

Thanks for sharing!

cuphongle 07-27-2005 05:03 AM

how do u install the plug in?
can someone help?

tinjon 08-03-2005 11:32 AM

is it working for RC-1? anyone?

p_sprei 08-03-2005 05:55 PM

hi
i got a problem with existing posts in my Board with hide hack implemented a few minutes ago

the existing threads, that contain the hide tag from vBulletin 3.0.7, would be readable without answering to the thread.
the hidden information is not in a "box" how it is at new posts.

please help quickly
thank you

PS: I user release candidate 1

edit:
if i reply to a thread with quick reply, than i must press f5 else the hidden text comes to show.

Sleepyk 08-17-2005 01:14 AM

will this work with RC2?

why sshould he change his i think you should change yours since he did his first for 3.50 first comes first serve you should of thought about that before he posted his and made a hack to do yours

Sleepyk 08-19-2005 12:19 AM

Maybe this will give you a better idea of a good use for this.

At my site, Tech-Unity
The site is mostly for people studying for a Computer/Networking Certification

I am provided questions by a few well known companys, Transcender, Redmond Exams, StudyExam4Less.

I post questions once a week, around 8 to 10.
when people reply to the question with whatever they think the answer is, they put it in this hide hack.
The next person coming into the thread cannot see his answer until (s)he replies, basically keeping human curiousity (some may say cheating) down to a minimum. I also have the spoiler tag set up for people that want to give users a hint (but not the answer).

at the end of the week I post the correct answers.

Granted this isn't perfect because people could reply with anything, just to look at the other guys answer then edit there post to put the correct answer, but, I have to use an honor system at least. :p

Example

Anyway, I hope that gives you a better idea, as to why you would use this. ;)
