might be answering my own qn... is it bcos user on their:- Invisible on 'Online users' list?

It's because they are invisible, and as an admin you can see all users even invisible ones. The * lets you know that person is invisible from others.

It was probably in their name. Even us lowly supermods can't see them.

2 . Not as far as I know, that may require hacking

The Members online count includes the invisible users so just count how many names appear and if it's less then the member count you have invisible people on.
