simple looking forums

i really do think that modern forums are a bit over the top on stuff, so i was wondering if anyone knows how i would go about simpligying it and using it as a default style, then having the normail one as an extra style for the more advanced forum users, i think Audio Galaxy has great looking and very simple (better on the bandwidth) forums. would this be hard to re-create?

Script a new message board php code :D? I think that if you have vBulletin, then it has to look a bit the same as everyone elses.

Doing a search on the word "simple," I found these threads.

#1. Simple postbit [link]

#2. A link to a very simple board [link]

I know I saw another board that was simplified to the extreme, but I couldn't find it.

The bottom line is that you'll simply have to remove a lot of things from vB to "simplify" it. Specifically, you'll need to remove graphics and keep elements to a minimum. The overall rule of thumb would be "if it's not integral to the forum, then delete it.

The links above should help to get you started. :)

Heck, if the Styles forum get's launched, I think I'll try my hand at this just to see how simple you can make it. Interesting.

Now that I think of it, just make everything except the text the same color! And then click on the link that mashby has supplied (the first one) and install that hack.

well i like them ideas, but i want it really simple, like as if it was a guestbook, i hope mashby that you do make a style for this, and why is their no styles forum? it would be great to have 1.

SaintDog is working on adding that to the fourms. It seems to be a popular idea. :)

Ok, just as I was about to call it a day and go to bed, I decided to take a stab at this Simple Style.

I've just started and only worked with the postbit and the show_thread templates thus far, but here's a screenshot of how it's coming along.

Is this what you're looking for? Comments welcome. :)

Lazerus 07-30-2002 10:52 AM

yeah thats great but couldn't you just get rid of the entire authort column and put the name where the subject and date is? but so far so good :D

Like this?

Lazerus 07-31-2002 11:29 AM

yeah that looks great, exactly what i was trying to do for the post bit

mashby 08-01-2002 09:50 PM

Would you like me to post what I have, or wait until I'm done with the style?

Lazerus 08-02-2002 11:32 AM

it depends, if you feel you would like some advice on anything then post it, otherwise if your happy with what you have done then ill wait for the style :D

Lazerus 08-08-2002 07:11 PM

hey mashby has is this coming along? i think that if u finish this and submit it into the contest you will win.

mashby 08-09-2002 01:00 AM

I haven't had much time to work on it. Been VERY busy. I might be able to get back to it next week.

Has the contest started?

Edit: Nevermind, I see the new forums. :)

assassingod 09-02-2002 08:09 PM

For a simple postbit, check the link in my Sig, 'Very Simple Posbit'

Lazerus 09-02-2002 10:05 PM

yeah thats cool and all, cant quite see the simplicity in the postbit, but meh whatever thanx for the input

assassingod 09-02-2002 10:43 PM

That's what other people said. It's basically got nothing interesting in it at all:p Which makes it simple:):D

Lazerus 09-11-2002 11:52 PM

ok thanx, i been hacking the entire showthread template to really simplify it, i think its good to give members a faster forum. i know i would prefer it

mashby 09-12-2002 03:32 AM

I haven't forgotten this, I've simply been buried and unable to dedicate any time to it. It's still on my list, but I can't say when I'll have it done. Sorry. :(

Lazerus 09-12-2002 11:50 AM

hi, thats fine, thanx for the reply
