IP Question

I have about 500 members and it appears that a few members ( about 5 or 6 ) share the same IP addy. Is this normal? I am thinking that they are aolers and have used the same ip.

Also what are some methods you all have used to get rid of "unkind" members. I hav e one that has tons of IP addys.

Yeah, some have either signed up under multiple names most likely, but some may have brothers and sisters or people who use the same PC sign up on your forums as well!

Corriewf 05-17-2005 07:02 PM

No these people claim to be from different places. I am thinking aol but then again the possibility of 5 users using the same ip addy......

Could be users from the same educational institute :) All computers in my college network access the internet through the same proxy for example.

Corriewf 05-17-2005 07:17 PM

Yeah or using a proxy but I dont detect one and they claim to be from different places such as texas cal ect.

What is the reverse dns name of the ip in question ? It will probably be a big clue as to whether it's a proxy or not.

Corriewf 05-17-2005 07:49 PM

Yeah this is what one of the users resolves to.

cache-rtc-ab08.proxy.aol.com

Its just crazy that they recycle the IP.

So basiclly if someone has aol then they cant be banned "ip wise".

DDad 05-17-2005 11:49 PM

I have seen most of the dial ups and the DSL's use the ips over and over again. The broadband users keep the same ip (unless they refresh it). I have seen two people from the same town using aol and using the same ip at the same time.

AOL appear to use proxy servers quite heavily, so there's probably many AOL users hidden behind a few proxy addresses. In Europe, it's even more confusing, as sometimes AOL's system pushes users from one country onto another country's caching proxy.

Corriewf 05-18-2005 02:12 AM

So how you all handle banning people on your boards?

Paul M 05-18-2005 02:18 AM

Well if AOL proxies do what they should and forward the original client ip in the http headers then you can use the proxy > real ip hack. I can't test that from where I am at the moment.

Corriewf 05-18-2005 02:40 AM

I have it installed.

However those members do not show any icon that reflect a proxy is detected for an ip to be resolved.

Chris M 05-18-2005 07:14 AM

Someone needs to give AOL a slap :p

Satan

Corriewf 05-18-2005 11:12 AM

Thats what im saying.

Have any of you had a member you couldnt get rid of due to unlimited IP addys?

Marco van Herwaarden 05-18-2005 11:32 AM

Yes and it is almost impossible to get rid of those. All you can do is try to frustrate whatever they are doing as much as you can. Have a look at the miserable users hack.

Corriewf 05-18-2005 12:04 PM

Yeah I am a hack wh*re and have that installed already :) . My friends are great, but my enemies can be very determined........

I was on a board that was using vb2.x.x and it would spider through and ban every ip address used by that member automaticlly.

Is anyone aware of a hack like that?

Marco van Herwaarden 05-18-2005 12:18 PM

IT is a bit dangerous to automatic ban ip's.

Corriewf 05-18-2005 01:01 PM

Its just crazy that aol is really a proxy like software..... Whats the point of buying proxy software, all someone needs to do is the "bring your own connection" for 10 bucks a month....

So I guess the bottom line is that if someone wants to make my life a living hell on my board they can.
