BitTorrent Tracker

I'm a super mod at an anime forum where filesharing is quite an important aspect of the site so amongst other things we also run a bittorrent tracker there.
We used to run VBTT but I'm sure a lot of you have heard about the horror's of using it and the reputation of the author and we needed a new tracker.

I call it NuFreedom TorrentTracker aka NuTT although the name won't mean much to you unless you watch the Gundam SEED anime.

Basically, it's written almost completely from scratch although in some parts utilizing code from another quite advanced tracker.
Right now, while it does have the basic functions of a tracker, it is still incomplete with some key features still in the development queue like search functions, torrent editing, usergroup permissions. Not to mention how messy the code is right now :D

The key features included but not limited are:

  • passkey system - resolves all the problems you'd be getting with the pesky ip validation by adding the users unique passkey dynamically to the torrent when the user downloads it, doesn't modify the original torrent
  • complete integration with vB - uses the vB user table, ovbiously; shows user stats and current activities on the tracker in memberinfo; when uploading a torrent, creates a thread in the specified forum with the torrent details page showing last x comments from the thread
  • most extensive faq page - although many trackers have quite the similar FAQ, it covers virtually all problems one could have...
  • wait times - can be enabled or disabled; a time calculated by the user's upload/download ratio for which the user will have to wait before he can download a new torrent
  • multitude of settings - a large amount of settings that are set in the AdminCP under $vboptions so they can be used anywhere else also
Like I mentioned before, it's not complete at all however. The main goal was to get it up and running as fast as possible so a multitude of tweaks are still required and some of the pages are not to most good to look at either.

So now if you haven't fallen asleep yet from reading my mile long post, here is the demo:

Any and I mean all suggestions/ideas are welcome.

Looks pretty cool so far.

Omega Prime 04-30-2005 01:54 AM

I'm the admin/owner of the aforementioned site, so while it seems that no one's interested in this fully-integrated tracker, I just thought I'd add that AFusion has added the ability to rate torrents, as well as sorting torrents by seeds, leechers, comments, etc. Each day, the tracker looks more and more complete, yet surprisingly, only 1 person has commented about the tracker. Perhaps this may not be released publicly at this rate due to lack of interest, but we'll see how it goes.

Reeve of shinra 04-30-2005 02:11 AM

I am suprised no one else responded,... there are a ton of posts asking for a tracker like this. I think if you did release it, it would be very well recieved by alot of folks.

edit: I was actually thinking about this earlier and I am not sure how compatible it would be with the system your making but I know some places are trying to get more seeders by syncing with other trackers via an xml/rss feed. I figured I'd mention it since it might be helpful to you in some way.

arabuser 05-01-2005 03:30 AM

wow realy nice , I was looking for such tracker please can you tell me when you will release it to public I realy need this tracker for my site

afusion 05-01-2005 12:47 PM

I think somewhere around mid-may probably... If exams don't get in the way...

eXtremeTim 05-01-2005 04:53 PM

That looks awsome. I cant wait to see it come along.

deathemperor 05-02-2005 04:36 PM

it's cool really, I am highly looking forward to this.

my suggestion is: make torrent files to be in categories, I know most they will use the search function tho.

oh I saw the search function isn't completed yet.

I really want this as a good torrent tracker for vb, if you need help I'll gladly help ya.

Lynne 05-02-2005 07:41 PM

This sounds promising. We actually integrated a BNBT tracker into our site, however, it doesn't keep track of user stats at all which is something many of our users want. I'll be keeping an eye on this project.

Blam Forumz 05-02-2005 08:51 PM

Wooow, this sounds good, i'll be looking forward to this

If you click any of the category images (such as single, album, etc.), you can show a specific category :)

ericgtr 05-02-2005 09:36 PM

I would do a search for torrent on here and bump the discussion where it's heavily requested, there is a lot of talk about it.

yeah I noticed it after that post, but what I want is categories in the index page, structure is like vbulletin forum.

You should add a search button for all pages because users use the search most.

Xil Ze 05-03-2005 02:40 AM

rock on guys. i am stoked.

James T Brock 05-03-2005 03:55 AM

Great idea guys. I'd definately be interested in this.

FightRice.com 05-03-2005 05:27 AM

This is a cool idea but alot of hosts are starting to ban these from their clients using them if they are on a shared plan (like me :( )

So my question is how is this on taking up resources on the server so they never know its there?

And that's also what's pissing me off the most... Even big companies like id Software use bittorrent trackers for files...

Anyway, on our P4 3.2 GHz dedicated server the server load averages around 0.5 - 0.7 with 90+ users and 200 tracker peers, so I'd say it's pretty ok...

Well actuall I've just been using BitTorrent for less than a month, I don't know how it work.

What do you host on your server fro clients ? the *.torrent files ?

if there's any docs about this please post.

JohnBee 05-03-2005 04:43 PM

This idea is quite interesting to me.

Although BT has been categorized as an illegal file sharing medium I can testify that
in our industry there are already several open source derivatives of BT aimed at
producing collaboration modules for engineering design groups.

BT has proven to be a very dependable and effective means of document propagation
and management within a network of users. Its both flexible and robust enough to
deploy on large scales.

I operate a support forum with several long term development threads that could
make great use of such an add on. I did see the version for sale but a series of
mixed responses on the sellers after sale support convinced me to wait.

If you developed and released this add on you would be doing a great deal of good
for the support community using vBulletin.

Any idea when or how this will be available? It looks fantastic.

Care to take a look at post #6? ;)

GrusPer 05-04-2005 02:33 PM

And when it will be possible
To test or add a code

Sykoi 05-05-2005 08:57 AM

I'd love to use this; especially if you can limit certain torrents to certain groups.

If and when you need testers, just tell me - I have a feeling if I added something like this to my forum, I'd get several hundred downloads in the first few hours

Mind my asking how closely you follow the protocol, if you enforce / have the option to enforce certain rules, and if you keep track of all the user's data (Downloaded, uploaded, seeded, leeching, etc.)?

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind...

If by protocol you mean the BT protocol, then it's 100% compliant...
For rules I have the wait time system based on the user's ratio and soon I'm going to add usergroup permissions also (haven't worked on ug perms at all to be honest).

Right now it keeps track of the amounts user has downloaded/uploaded and lists any current seeding/leeching activity tracker. Soon I'm also gonna have it remember all torrents a user has completely downloaded.

If you need help with usergroup permissions, feel free to contact me, I can help with my best cuz I want this hack too.

if you use YIM by any chance, mine is deathemperor2nd

pixelpunk 05-12-2005 11:12 AM

If you need someone to help test it I'd be willing to help out.

I run a website that I want to help local djs distribute their mixes via torrents and since it's non-profit I haven't been willing to pay out any cash. Reading the horror stories people have had with some of the other choices to do this I'm glad I've held out.

My board has been up for quite awhile so my two year license has run out so I'm still running 3.0.1. Maybe I'll upgrade one day but like I said, I'm willing to be a test-server.

Thanks afusion for starting something like this, I'm sure it'll become a must-have hack for all vbulletin users!

WEForums 05-13-2005 12:05 AM

I'm also interested in this. Running vB3.0.7 and looking for a vB BitTorrent tracker. It'll help with downloads rather than using YouSendIt and Rapidshare (wrestling multimedia).

If you need another tester...

flame 05-13-2005 08:49 PM

you never know if the demand is high until you release it. not every users look at this discussion forum, they will just join in hacks threads, looking for new releases, search hacks, etc. but if you got 10 ppl want that hack here, that's pretty enough isn't it ?

I have a few questions about the development so far.

How are files going to be stored (database or files)? Will it stress the server's SQL? Server loads?

JTyson 05-15-2005 03:27 AM

I am definetly interested in this, looks great so far, keep it up.

Right now they're stored as files. It's a lot handier that way just incase you run into some problems and you need to rehash them or whatnot but I doubt I'll move them to the database.

It won't stress MySQL almost at all. Scrape is extremely small with only one query and announce is very optimized also.

arabuser 05-15-2005 09:36 AM

afusion it is already 15 May ;) we are still waiting :tired:

Well they did :p

So while I have worked on it quite a little, I still need to optimize it (index takes 50 queries:nervous: ) and a add the missing features. Expect a lot more in the first weeks of June though (unless Jelsoft pulls some miracle and unleashes vB 3.5 beta in the first week of June in which case I'd be staring at it's code 24/7 :p)

Good. Files would be more handy indeed.

Sounds good. Can't wait to test it out. Should be useful.

yoyoyoyo 05-21-2005 10:50 AM

looking forward to seeing this

Hey, it's gone 'mid may' now, any updates on when this'll be released? :D

Omega Prime 05-24-2005 10:17 PM

While I can't truly speak for AFusion, he's still working out a few bugs, but a release should be made any day now :)

Stifler 05-25-2005 12:29 PM

looking forward to the release as well.
