for free, i suggest invision 1.3,pretty good

but when it comes to paying, vbulletin all the way

Deaths 04-01-2005 08:06 AM

Hmm, I guess IPB.
I hate PHPBB, always have and always will.

Guy G 04-01-2005 08:38 AM

But ipb 1.3 is totally free? is it better than phpBB 2?

Deaths 04-01-2005 08:44 AM

I'm 100% sure IPB 1.2 is free, atleast when you have Cpanel.

And yes, IPB is better than phpBB 2, if you ask me.
Do a little searching on google, you might find the trial version of IPB 2, thats free, and the only difference is that you have a little popup in the ACP.

Guy G 04-01-2005 08:49 AM

Hmm.... what about phpBB 3... what do you think?

Deaths 04-01-2005 08:53 AM

I've never heard of PHPBB 3, where did you get that from?

Guy G 04-01-2005 09:22 AM

<a href="http://www.phpbb.com" target="_blank">www.phpbb.com</a>

They will lunch it soon...

I would say IPB, cause back then phpBB used to get way to slow once a lot of people visited the forums.

MyTopix - http://www.jaia-interactive.com/ Its a lot better than phpbb and ipb1.2!

The Gold version MyBulletinBoard is about to be released! I have friend that uses it and it seem very nice, and has way more features than IPB or phpBB 3!

I disagree. mybb cant compare to vb2 or phpbb2 let alone vb3 or phpbb 3. It has no real hacks and the few that are out basically add functionality that other forums already have. Its a nice try but its not ready for prime time by any means.

As far as free goes, I just dont like IPB (any version of it). I dont want to be hassled with all of thier policy changes. PHPBB has a huge following and a great support community and has an established presense on the web. I obviously like vbulletin better but I deffinitely support what they are doing.

Guy G 04-01-2005 05:25 PM

Hmm... ipb is very limited(trial version)... only 5000 posts and 1000 threads.

Doesnt worth it.

I think phpBB is the way to go - largest community, many free mods and styles.

Also, there is an imitation to vbulletin 2... open source, OvBB.. www.ovbb.org , not many features yet, but look promising.

phpBB is awful, it's a security nightmare, you know I always hear about coding standards when comes to phpBB, but let me tell you they need to learn PHP coding standards, before they try to make their own. Worse board ever! Sure that's only my opinion, but it shared by many good PHP developers. I've been attacked about this statement before on other boards and so have other developers and I have and so have others given good reasons why it dangerous and lacks good logic! But again that's just my opinion, but I am entitled to express it!

As for MyBB, I never looked at the code, so I can not say how well it is written, my comment about that were based on the features it has and that is all. IPB is a good much better than phpBB that's for sure!

ezboard all the way

While I think other software is great I do not believe vBulletin.org is the proper place to be discussing such things.

You should try someplace like TheAdminZone.com :)
