*very carefully clicks GAS3 (again)

WhSox21 03-15-2005 06:46 AM

Voted for the HelpDesk ;). Is it wrong to vote for your own hack? :nervous:

sabret00the 03-15-2005 09:24 AM

congratulations to everyone who made the great hacks that got selected.

Oblivion Knight 03-15-2005 10:03 AM

How many times has the GAS been up for HotM now?

I'd have voted for the MAS (Moderator Application System) had it have been up this month, but as it stands I've voted for "Show Spiders Online on ForumHome".

Ouch!

The first time GAS was up, it was for the lite version (all that hack did was swap 2 templates at run time).

Last month, version 3 was up but the admins took it down because they said it was already nominated and smacked my hand for starting a new thread for 3.0. The crap thing was that v.3 is NOTHING like the lite version (hence the reason for the new thread). All it took was 2 seconds to look at the two versions to see the massive difference. vBa Homepage was up for HOTM and so was vBa CMPS and those two were a hell of a lot closer than the two GAS versions.

Version 3.5 is in RC now and that is a massive update, but since it is still in the same vein as 3.0 - it will stay in the v.3.0 thread.

Hope my wimpy self justifications made sense!

nJoy and best of luck everyone!

sabret00the 03-15-2005 11:11 AM

Personally i think your threads should all be merged geek, whether the lite version differed or not it's still the same hack, being the Geek Article System however that being said 3.5 did get a new thread so it's not quite all in the same thread. also vBa homepage and vBa CMPS are two different things and yet the same, it's kinda having a pen, then having a pen that can do different colours (i'm pretty sure cmps the whole content management system part could've been released a hack to a hack).

But yours is just still the article system no matter how much extra it's changed, that being said i wish you all the success with it and you should stay up for selection as you're there already. Although as i previously said your threads should be merged together.

The Geek 03-15-2005 11:24 AM

Hey Sabre - 3.5 is in a beta thread. Once its final it will be in released in the 3.0 thread and the beta thread closed. Otherwise you clutter up your release thread with beta testing.

Not sure why you think homepage and cmps are different, but the template swapping system and full fledged article system are not.
I guess in the end it doesnt matter - I work my breasts off on my hacks not for HOTM but for the users.

Thanks

sabret00the 03-15-2005 11:27 AM

good luck with your hack and good luck with winning HOTM :)

Paul M 03-15-2005 01:52 PM

Whatever the reason - the hack is now in the vote and should stay there - I firmly disagree with what was done last time - removing a hack after people had already voted.

TheComputerGuy 03-15-2005 02:54 PM

I like both of these things...especially the help desk and the article system

How the heck did Sonia's (why-not) "Save Draft" hack not make it???????????????????????????????????

it never got enough installs? :shrugs:

KW802 03-15-2005 03:15 PM

Oooo.... tough choice between GAS and HelpDesk. GAS solves a need for me but the HelpDesk packs a lot of functionality into something that does not require any code edits. Must... choose...

It's only got 22 installs (at this moment). The one with the least amount of installs on this poll has 60.

Oblivion Knight 03-15-2005 03:20 PM

The Geek: Please don't take my comment in a negative fashion, it just seemed to me that the GAS is commonly featured in these HotM polls..

I fully appreciate the time and effort that you've put in to such a large modification like yours, and releasing it to the public here at vbulletin.org :)

Sorry if I seemed defensive guys - I just felt I got a little shafted last month when it was removed ;)

Some great hacks up there and Im just chuffed to actually have a fair stab at it.

Is this the part where I point out the same thing was done to vBGarage? Different author almost all new code? No big deal, I just wanted to get some attention. It's quiet here today.

vBulletin.org rocks!

Oh yeah, "breasts"?

Web templates gets my vote... I have vBadvanced installed, but making the pages in HTML and PHP (although not really a problem) took a fair amount of time.. and Logician saved the day

frage 03-18-2005 12:46 AM

Geek Article System 3.00
HelpDesk v1.55
Blink PM icon with userinfo
WebTemplates 3.x: VB Integrated Content Management System
wow !! so very difficult choice, i have installed all these hacks and all working like a charm...

WebTemplates 3.x : One of most dynamic hacks i have ever used for my forums. Creating new webpages, webtemplates was never so easy and so well integrated into VBulletin. Awesome!!

utility-wise to my forums, i voted for Geek Articles 3.00 for adding a wonderful level of functionality & presentation and also i like the way this "The Geek" takes sometime to write his ever so useful yet funny instructions for the end user... :nervous:

Help-Desk v1.55 too is wonderful addon... no file edits whatsoever and works like a charm, but for my forums it has got a limited utility for now.

Blink PM icon with userinfo, definitely useful and inviting... i love it :)

Save Drafts hack should be in the reckoning soon enough i think...

Regards

When upgrading your forums there will be no problems. This will not give you any headaches because it almost runs separate of vBulletin

Surely firstly its not a hack if there are no file edits... and surely if its a seperate program its also not a hack too?

It's not a seperate program first of all because it uses permissions and runs off of vbulletin's files. Second of all it SHOULD have file edits but I made it so that it does not!

SaN-DeeP 03-31-2005 12:41 PM

HelpDesk v1.55

The Geek 03-31-2005 02:44 PM

Pretty big differences between the 3 article systems mentioned - hence the reason there are 3 ;)

Each has pros and cons - it all depends on the type of system you are after.

I also do not agree with the concept that if there are no file edits, it isnt a hack. Technically it may not be a hack - it would be more of an add-on however it doesnt make any less worthy of HotM.
In fact, when an add on requires little hacking - its a sign of pretty decent coding! (he says with the amount of file edits in GAS3! [at least they are done automatically!])

Just my 2 cents.

Bolas 04-01-2005 09:11 PM

Help Desk resolved my ALL my problems of interaction with users. It's the best!

Mr. Brian 04-08-2005 08:08 AM

I go for "Geek Article System 3.00"

WhSox21 04-15-2005 04:49 AM

Let me be the first to say Congratulations geek...

After installing your hack it was well worth the HOTM. ;)
