I am working on integrating vb with phpWebsite and abandoning the phpNuke integration. This portal blows phpNuke away as far as speed, cleaner coding and it is modular in design making it easier to create addons. I'm currently working on several things, first being a new WEBLinks with unlimited sub category depth. Second is full integration with vb's control panel. Last but not least is a new download section that will contain categories! Wajones will be working on it as well and I think you will all like it, you can see a demo of the WEBLinks here. The vb integration will come shortly after the vb2.0 release. Any suggestions or requests for this or future releases will gladly be accepted.

That's extremely cool. I'd offer my coding skills to the effort, but since I don't really have any... it's not much of an offer. But if you want someone to test out features or provide feedback, I'm really good at giving developers more work to do. <g>

One thing I'm concerned about is if a new version of vB comes out, like vB 3.0 or something. What if that new version changes the database layout and all of a sudden your whole site that is integrated around a vB database doesn't work right anymore? Is this portal of yours modular enough to be able to adapt to changes like this?

I hope everything goes well. The phpnuke integration definitely is slow and I could see it being hell with tons of users. I hope this is clean and fast.

The reason is the coding in phpNuke is very sloppy at best! Yes it will be faster than what phpnuke is or will ever be.

phpNuke 4.4 is supposed to be out today, when it arrives I will download load it and compare the 2 of them, wajones is working very hard on the phpnuke integration and I'm sure he is also going to look at it the new version so he can continue his work on the nuke2vb. From what I see at phpnuke.org and the 4.4 version they are running at the site looks very promising but until I see the code who knows? I have been having some luck on integrating new addons for both phpnuke and phpwebsite so I will continue with helping wajones on the nuke2vb as far as addons go. If you do visit the phpnuke site please be aware that they are still on the old server so it will be slow. Keep watching this thread for updates!

We are quite pleased that others are interested enough in our project to suppliment phpWebSite. Thanks Dark.

BTW, although ultimately I think we will always be compared to phpNuke, we are not trying to compete or out perform them. In fact, we are very appreciative for their support. And as someone mentioned, they might be on a slower server. Our university connection is quite fast so keep that in mind when viewing their site and ours.

This is one that I am looking at, it seems to be very fast (which I care about more than anything else)

Does have a sql error on their homepage - not good, but I downloaded it and it works fine.

They have a strange way of working the files, that I am not familar with - it will not work with out a 404 redirct - cause it is sending you to pages that do not exist (had me confused like hell in the install)

It would be nice if these super coders would make an admin center where you can change colors and not have to edit a dozen files to get what you want... PHP nuke 4.3 dosn't like to be changed from white or something since white is the backround color for a lot of the pages and is not editable through themes...

I cant belive someone didn't hack something like that already...

Actually I have already done that using external vars files but haven't documented it yet and probably won't until the phpnuke4.4 release.

I saw a quote by King Richard at www.nukeaddon.com. He made a brief mention that the stupid white background problem had been fixed in Nuke4.4 (he saw a recent beta of the 4.4 code it appears).

Looks like Nuke might be looking up :)

Its in its first baby steps as a script - so it has a long ways to go - but the one thing I really like is that it loads with decent speed. I do not know crap about optimization, but I have looked at all the files (and there is not that many - maybe a 1/10th of the other portal scripts) and none of them are really really big

the other big advantage is since I am running on a virtual server and do not control the fact that I am still on php3 that this is written in php3

I like what I see so far - can think of a few things that I would like to see added, but its a nice efficient script at this point. Admin could use some work, and a few other things - but --- I like.

actually this one that I am trying has two different background right now - i think that as the program gets more use and more hacks it will get more. They way it is written the user can choose if he wants the blue on white, or go into their profile and choose the other option and get red on black - the files that control this are small so I think that it would be easy to go in and set it up so you had 10-15 user defined colors with out a prob.

Could someone here download php web site and change it into a .zip file and then attach it here? I would really appreciate it. I would do it on my own but I don't have winzip and use a different zip compressor and would like to avoid downloading it.

I have spent some time looking into all of these portal systems. Thus far, I think that phpwebsite has the leading edge. I like many of the features. I also realize that there have not been many developments to nuke2vb, because of the waiting for VB 2.o to be released. For this reason I think that it is too hard to say which will be the best portal to use right now, and even several weeks after VB 2.0 come out. It will take some time to tell which will work better, and have more of the features that we will want. For now, I think that I will stick with what I have and play with VB 2.0 when it comes out, and soon after, begin looking at all of the many options that are and will be availible. But one thing is for sure, there is a lot of interest in a portal system that is compatible with VB.

The next version of Nuke2vB will attempt to achieve a combination of the best of all these Portals although we may just port them all just for the %$% of it :D , but our goal is to build Nuke2vB into a "vBShell?" a vB Template driven portal based on PHPNuke/PHPWebsite, they (PHPNuke and PHPWebsite) are basically the same core. Giving the user the ability to add both the addons the great hackers here make for vB and the ones made for PHPNuke and PHPWebsite.

I have just downloaded the new phpNuke 4.4 release and am floored at the fact that this is NOT all cracked up to be. The only fixes I have found after a careful compare with the 4.3 version is the following:

• Grammar fixes
• Some HTML tag fixes (only a few...still alot left!)
• Typos fixed
• Improved Downloads section
• King Richards 2.05 Addon integrated

That's it? I cannot belive all of the hype about this product and how good it is when the first page fails miserably when checked against a HTML validator and this includes the latest release! Francisco even states:

The buglist is getting bigger at phpnuke.org and it appears that some of the same bugs are still there from version 4.3 along with some serious ones as well.

Amazingly, despite all the bad HTML, the site now loads incredibly fast (on a T1). It's faster than Slashdot or vBulletin for that matter. It's under pretty heavy usage too:

I'm not sure how fast the new server is, but it seems to be keeping up with a fair amount of traffic.

Nonetheless, I still would rather see work done on integration with PhpWebsite, rather than Nuke. Nuke adds features before bugfixes. Most of these features really aren't necessary for us seeing as how we already have them with vB. For example Private Messaging, Forums, Nuke is becoming bloated with features IMHO.

PhpWebsite on the other hand is fast, XHTML compliant, and doesn't have features like forums which would be useless to vB integration.

Well, I have had the opportunity to use both PHPNuke and PHPWebsite, and I must say that PHPWebsite is FAR better than PHPNuke.

Although, PHPNuke does have a one-up on PHPWebsite for being further along in the game, but that does not make up for all of it's faults.

I testing my back-to-back on two different servers, one with PHPNuke, and one with PHPWebsite.

PHPNuke is getting a lot of errors, and I found out AFTER the fact that PHPNuke requires PHP v4.0 or better to run the forums. And, there are a lot of other coding errors within the scripts. I've even fixed a few myself.

PHPWebsite, on the other hand, has been running flawlessly, except for a few errors on *my* part. :D The admin menu and integration are much easier than PHPNuke, you hardly have to use your shell at all when setting it up. The install procedures, including database conversion, is all done using PHP. And, I have yet to run into any errors, except for the ones I personally created. The only fault I can find with PHPWebsite is that it is not as feature packed as PHPNuke. But, as they say, good things come to those who wait.

I'd rather stand and watch PHPWebsite grow than use PHPNuke and watch it slide all over the place with sloppy, redundant code.

And to think, PHPWebsite hasn't even reached 1.0 yet.

I have also played around with phpnuke, geeklog, and phpwebsite. While I though geeklog was pretty good, phpwebsite is quite a bit better. Now I am working on the intigration of vbulletin.

Paintballdude's site looks great so he is obviously having better luck with the intigration than I am having. Maybe he would be willing to share some of his knowledge sometime .... hint hint.

Anyway, phpwebsite is a great start and can be made much better with some extra work, just check out paintballchannel.com. And if you are really bored, here is my attempt http://xtremetuning.net/yo.php .

I have been working on this as well and been in contact with the developer team for phpWebSite. You can see my progress here. It is not complete yet as the team is making some major changes, the plugins(addons) are being developed as well and some are available from their site. Here is a list of the plugins I have been working on but not yet complete:

• Reviews

The userbase integration will be complete soon and will allow moderators to act as authors. I am also putting the final touches on the vb and phpwebsite control panel integration as well.

When you integrate vbulletin and a portal site like phpwebsite, which calendar do you use? I'm not too interested in displaying peoples birthdays but I want to have a calendar of events. Which one should I use?

My question would be this.... Why would you want to use anything other than vBulletin's? If you use PHPWebsites your losing all the built-in user features.

You can simply comment out the birthday display in the templates if you don't want it to show.

I like vBPortal, but dont want to switch to yet another CMS. Plus, the news is displayed as a thread.

Geeklog has a nice integration. But, again, I dont want to switch again.
