Whats up with

Whats up with people only wanting to pay $10-$20 for a lot of hard work? The past few people on the service requests are either wanting to pay that or nothing. I talked to one guy who needed a style with flash, graphic heavy style, and he said he will pay $5, anyone else noticing this?

Dean C 01-18-2005 11:17 AM

Unfortunately that's the way the industry is going for low-end freelancers. There are now millions of other people who can do design/programming/coding and the competition has resulted in prices going down.

$5 for a style is ridiculous though ;)

You get what you pay for to be honest.. ;)

For $5, I may just about force myself to make a new banner for them or something.

alot of people just dont think when their online doing buisness especially online. That low of money for a style, that person must be some 10year old doing buisness which got himself ripped off. Pretty much stupied like a bum standing in the middle of a highway with a sign. "Will work for any pay"

Marco van Herwaarden 01-18-2005 12:04 PM

Most funny are the request:

"Need some hacks installed, some new styles, Articles, Shop and CMPS installed. Willing to pay $5-10. VB STAFF ONLY PLEASE!."

sabret00the 01-18-2005 12:06 PM

theirs just less money available, plus alot of half assed coders.

Marco van Herwaarden 01-18-2005 12:39 PM

Hehe like me?? ;)

Well i am just a beginner in vBulletin/php/html. Was introduced (sucked into ;)) the world of administring boards recently. Didn't know how to code 1 line of html or php.

Learned what i know today (and i feel like it isn't much yet) by reading vB sources, other hacks, etc. Starting with modifying some existing hacks, then slowly writing my own.

Most of what i have done until wasn't written to make available in public. Have just yesterday released a beta of my first public hack yesterday on vbulletin.nl, afer a request that was made here. Will try to make some improvements to that tomorrow, so i can release it here.

Nothing special i think, most people can learn what i have learned in the past few months, if they only would take the time and the interest to learn somehting themself, instead of always relying on others ;)

Hehe, better stop now :D

PS By looking at problems others have and trying to find a solution, i only learn more myself.

Time is money, and if you can find somebody to do a job for you it might be "cheaper" then doing it yourself (if you don't have the knowledge yet)

That is how it should be, but somehow a lot (not all i guess) tend not to value their own time very high. So "cheaper" then doing it yourself ends up in almost nothing.

Don't get me wrong, if i see an interesting thing (meaning it also gives me something, in learning for example) i would do it for free, as long as the other party also isn't making money out of it.

Honestly, do you think these are worth $5.00 USD?

he's a good bloke, he's helping the php forum to come back to life and don't forget rake, he's gret too :) their not the only two though.

AN-net 01-18-2005 05:45 PM

yes some of the prices are ridiculous but i think a good opportunity for the beginning coding who wants to freelance. me personally i like working on projects that innovative and havent been done before. I havent done freelance yet and i dont plan too really. I think I may go into product design and expansion;)

Tekton 01-18-2005 06:21 PM

I think the best money makers are people that are referred to you from helping people they know.

Xenon 01-18-2005 06:28 PM

Well, as someone already said, you get what you pay for.

a bigger job for just 10$ will most likely end up in a novice coder.
For those induviduals it's good to practice, the requester gets a cheap code.

but it has also disadvantages, novice coders won't produce optimized code most of the time, also for such small fees no support is given normally.

So, those who want better work will also pay more, that's the law of the market.

ericgtr 01-18-2005 07:22 PM

After learning how to work with the board a little bit and piecing together a few half assed mods I have gotten a few requests for mods or customizations on other peoples sites. Money isn't really an issue for me as much as learning so I haven't charged for anything, usually if I find a request is something I can use I will put it together for someone. Until I learn this stuff better I am more apt to just help out where I can, it will pay off eventually.
