Hahaaa, MSN tries to be Google?

A poor attempt to imitate Google:
http://beta.search.msn.com/

Comments? It was the first and last time I used that Google copycat...

filburt1 11-22-2004 11:50 PM

The style is a blatant ripoff, and I have no reason to switch to it if I'm satisfied with Google (as would the tens of millions of other users).

memobug 11-23-2004 12:11 AM

Hey, where are the GOOD attempts to imitate Google? They need the competition anyway to keep them on their toes. Anyway, my site came up on page 4 of this engine (under BONSAI) , so I am all for it! I read in that in response to the MSN press release Google immediately increased the number of indexed pages several times over, so it's already working!

Regards,

Matt

There is a lot of similarity..
Even the sponsored links on top :)

Caiman 11-23-2004 10:49 AM

I dont use a search engine based on looks, if it works, I'd use it.

sabret00the 11-23-2004 11:03 AM

well it ranks me higher on "EBS" than Google so i can see the attraction already lol

Johnny 11-23-2004 11:33 AM

msn is one of the worst sites you can go to. so hard loooking for anything on their site.

sabret00the 11-23-2004 12:01 PM

i'm also in their top ten for "chit chat forums" msn search 0wns

AN-net 11-23-2004 04:41 PM

yeah but how many will use it....
so despite ranking i rather be listed on a search engine that has spawned its own phrase due its popularity;) "just google it"

The browser is probably next actually.

Dean C 11-23-2004 05:32 PM

Just wait til they tie in the search with the OS and msn and everything else :)

lolz perfect statement ;)

WhSox21 11-23-2004 06:32 PM

Why would they go after the browsers? I see them having more opportunity with the IMs? With FireFox just released being opensource and tons of supporters I'm not sure that google would have a chance in that market? Correct me if I'm wrong.

google have their firefox deal, the next ie will see an msn search box i reckon

but i don't think GIM would ever be able to touch MSNIM

Tony G 11-23-2004 09:23 PM

It'll take a lot more than building the search engine to beat google, MSN. :p

paulyy 11-23-2004 09:56 PM

I can't see much changing just because they built a new search engine. I also highly doubt Google will be worried about what Micro$oft are doing with MSN Search right now.

Tony G 11-23-2004 10:06 PM

They'll have to offer something Google don't that will impress the millions that already rely and trust the google search engine.

I don't see that happening.

While the majority of the internet uses google, I'm sure MSN search will be used very often too. As well as all the others.

TECK 11-23-2004 11:20 PM

It does not stop MicroCrap copying... as usual... what's good out there and pretend they can make it better.

Michael Morris 11-24-2004 02:42 AM

I almost guarantee this is a precursor to Windows Longhorn - they'd rather tie in their own search engine to the OS than someone else's. So, when you perform searches of you're own system their search may return related items from the internet.

That at least is ONE thing M$ can do that Google can't.

paulyy 11-24-2004 08:26 AM

True, but tieing people up to their products will make them change. Everyone likes options.

when you get an update for IE that makes your default search MSN's you'll see the power they have over google.

The only time I use IE is when testing compatibility with my website designs. Other than that I use Opera and Firefox to surf :) Yes they do have an advantage with the whole integrated search, but those who know how good Google is won't settle for anything less than the best ;)

i too surf most of my sites with FF, however most of the world stick with IE

Dean C 11-24-2004 12:36 PM

Latest stats (can't remember where I read them) show that firefox still only has 1% of the market share :)

The stats I read show they have 18.6% and Opera 2.3% .... even so, assuming it is only 1% of the market in the short period of time the non-preview release has been out, is quite impressive. You also have to take into consideration peoples laziness and ignorance towards security for example "it's my PC it's secure 'cause I said so".

FireFox will take a larger share I think if IE doesn't step up its game. People will get sick of updating and look for a better solution, not to mention the free advertising FireFox is drumming up ;) But I think i wandered a bit off topic ...

dethfire 11-24-2004 08:43 PM

I can't wait for msn beta to go live, all my sites are ranked extremely high for good keywords

deathemperor 11-25-2004 06:02 AM

this is sucks, they should try to beat Google by something which is different from its foes' look.

this only makes Google the best

S.Shady 02-11-2005 04:40 PM

Couldn't agree more.

Anyone that can judge the MSN beta app in one view is expressing blind loyalty to google.

Anyone that can say MS is copying google is expressing blind loyalty. Let's talk email.

Not one person has posted any real usage survey stats to back their usage percentage quotes, so that again has to be blind loyalty and a guess.

You have to do special things and follow rules to "get" in google and folks waste alot of time doing it IMO. Yahoo and MSN list sites that do none of the above just fine.

Most folks use MSN, Yahoo and AOL with IE and have buttons that are nicely custom configured for them to get to those places. They don't use google for an ISP and google is not in their faces, the others are.

Agreed, every techy person you talk to will say go to google. But let me tell you from being on the streets servicing computers for regular folks. They don't use google.

Does that mean google is not sucessful? By no means, they are a big player, they just aint the only player and they are not as original as one would like to believe.

Use what you like, but don't be ignorant and expect anyone to believe google or any search engine can be the best. They will all overlap at some point and not even cross reference in others.

The only way to be successful using a seach engine for any reason, reseach or advertising, is to use more then one.

No business keeps all it's eggs in one basket when sourcing anything. Why would you do it with research or advertising? To limit your business tools is to limit success which will certainly lead to failure.
