*sigh* I can't believe it's already that time of year again. For me (and probably many others), the Christmas season starts on Black Friday.

Can anyone explain what a black friday is?

I remember that term from history lessons, but wasn't that around 1910-30 ^^

Looking at the site bradolson mentioned:

Quote:

The day after Thanksgiving in the United States, is frequently referred to as Black Friday. One of the major U.S. holiday shopping days, it is the day many U.S. consumers begin Christmas shopping. The day is heavily promoted by retailers. The origin of Black Friday comes from the shift to profitability during the holiday season. Black Friday was when retailers went from being unprofitable, or "in the red," to being profitable, or "in the black", at a time when accounting records were kept by hand and red indicated loss and black profit.

Last year, Black Friday was a huge day for internet retailers. Amazon.com received 2.5 times as many orders between midnight and noon as it did the same time a year ago, according to company spokesman Paul Capelli. Many other Internet retailers also saw a huge spike in sales as customers jumped online instead of into their cars. This year figures to be just as lucrative, if not more.

xenon the one you are thinking of is the stockmarket crash of 1929 (i think) now blackfriday is the day after thanksgiving in the U.S. its a good idea to stay away from stores in the US on that day. it reminds me of the wild animals (mainly females) attacking one another

Xenon 11-09-2004 05:15 PM

right, that was the one i meant :)

bah same term different meanings, bad idea ^^

i work in retail and i dread black friday, customers are like animals fighting and +++++ing at each other saying "+++++ i was in front of you!" and leaving the store as if a bomb hit

its sad that we define holidays by sale events>_<

Black Friday is also a term used in Australia from a firestorm in 1939 as told here
"Tragedy struck on Black Friday, the 13th of January 1939 when a firestorm swept across Victoria......71 people died."

The term used commonly in the US for the 'day after thanksgiving' was given such a name as Black Friday because it resulted in a shift from being (unprofitable) "in the red" to (profitable) "in the black", back when accounting records were kept by hand and different colored ink was used to determin a good or bad number.

However, the Wikipedia lists several "Black Friday" events in history. :D
