Because if you do not have a license, then you are either not running vB and don't have need for hacks or you are running vB illegally. And we do not support illegal forums.

andrew67 11-01-2004 03:51 AM

In theory there's no way you would be able to use the hacks without first having a license. However as vbulletin is freely available illegally, they try to restrict the amount of hacks getting out by making you register with your vbulletin license. However as a lot of the hacks get leaked illegally also.... The only thing a license really covers you for is "OFFICIAL" support for the board software and the hacks published.

In summary you need the license to download the hacks for the software which you should already have a license for.. If doing things by the book.

**EDIT Beaten** :(

NeonSephiroth 11-01-2004 03:54 AM

what bout the people that make hacks for vB. Do they have to have it on this site or not?

andrew67 11-01-2004 03:57 AM

Nope there's nothing saying you have to publicly release your hacks on the forums. However this way you would reach your largest target audience. It's just their generosity that makes them release them. Also allows a wider range of beta testers of your hack so you can find problems quicker.

NeonSephiroth 11-01-2004 03:59 AM

I understand where you all are coming from but whats the point of really doing it if you know that soe users will distrb them on p2p servers and all

Steve Machol 11-01-2004 04:00 AM

Just because there are pirates, does not mean that we have to support them.

andrew67 11-01-2004 04:02 AM

Some people will distribute on p2p, other sites etc. However the people using them won't be able to get official support for the hacks.

NeonSephiroth 11-01-2004 04:04 AM

Yeah. What bout images like avatars and rank images do you have to have a license for that or not? When I get my job I probably might get vB or stay with phpbb. Just don't know which one I would choose though lol.

andrew67 11-01-2004 04:06 AM

It's really the same as most software, microsoft sells windows and within a day or so there's pirated cracked versions available.

NeonSephiroth 11-01-2004 04:06 AM

Question about the licenese agreement. Would some one be allowed to create a distro version of their own like Linux but kept the copyright agreements and everything?

andrew67 11-01-2004 04:07 AM

I don't know about the avatars/rank images they're probably copyrighted (well some of them) but I don't know to whom. I don't know about the license agreement either. One of the staff can answer that

Anything released on this board, vb.com, or vBt requires a vaild license to download.

But the author dose retain the copyright of his work and can release it to anyone he wants.

NeonSephiroth 11-01-2004 04:12 AM

so for example i have a lifetime license and i can modify vbulletin in anyway I want and make it into a different way than it was orginally was made. And decide to distrib it for for? I can do that? And if I do do i have to keep the vbulletin copyright or can i remove it? i wanna know when i buy vb and decide to do it

andrew67 11-01-2004 04:17 AM

If you're basing your software on vbulletin you would have to leave the vbulletin copyrights where they are. I also don't think you'd be able to redistribute their software that's been edited and renamed. Unless you got specific permission like if you were porting it for other operating systems, then you'd probably have to join the vbulletin team in order to be allowed to do it. However whether they're interested in doing that I don't know.

You can't actually do that anyway, you're not meant to edit copyrights etc unless given permission.

Does the license price include access to the source code?

Yes - vBulletin is a 'visible source' product, which means that you have access to the PHP source code of the product. You are free to modify the product in any way, provided you retain the vBulletin/Jelsoft copyright notices. For information about vBulletin code "hacking", please visit our unofficial sister site, vbulletin.org. Please note that we are unable to support any installations of vBulletin that have had the source code modified. For more information about the licensing implications of code modification, please review our license agreement.

thats what i got from their faq and they say that yall are an unofficial site.

so i can modify it but gotta keep the copyright stuff unless i pay an extra $120

You are allowed to modify it, but not to distribute any files, modified or not!
