who's online help

My who's online stopped working. I installed so many hacks that I would not know where to begin to look. Which in the online_function or online.php can cause who's online to make everyone disappear, and do so randomly?

Xenon 10-12-2004 04:05 PM

actually both can ;)

it depends on where it happens?
just on who's online page or on other pages where the online functions are used as well.

if it's jsut on who's online, then it's most likely online.php

any clues on what to look for? I inspected every single comma and can't figure it out. No one can see each other anymore, and at times they do. It is as if this get triggered when someone visit 'a specific page' (I do not know which one). I had the same trigger problem with two hacks and interfering bitfields. But who's online do not seem to deal with bitfields.

I believe this happened with the different cookie for admin hack. I uninstalled it, deleted all my cookies, but still no good.

Xenon 10-12-2004 04:22 PM

Hmm, it could be several reasons.

i had a quite similar problem once on vb.org with just one style. In the end it was a missing image file, and nothing more...

I suggest to just replace online.php with an orignial one and test if the error occurs or not.
if it does, then reupload your modified file again, and do the same process with the function file.

Sounds like a cookies issue: ahve you installed any hacks that modify the way your board assigns cookies?

Lionel 10-13-2004 12:35 AM

Yes. The new hack about admin only cookies. I uninstalled, deleted all cookies... and everybody and me are having problems. It's pretty lonely.

thanks, that was my first shot. That did not fixed the problem

another thing that disappeared too: The link 'Go to First Unread Post'. I do not know if they are related?

Lionel 10-14-2004 01:39 PM

some more observations.

If I am logged in, then logout, and relog back in, I see two who's online the new me and the old me without an IP address.

If I start surfing and check who's online I see me viewing the different pages. Then for no reasons, I stop seeing the pages and I get stucked on viewing who's online.

If I live my site and go somewhere else, then come back, I show that I am stucked at old page.

I do not see anyone and nobody can see anybody. Except for another admin who can see me but I cannot see him. And he cannot see anyone else.

I deleted all cookies, tried 3 different PC.

Based on that, maybe someone else can give me a pointer?

Shouldn't
define('VB_AREA', 'Forum');
in globals.php

reflects my forum folder name instead of "Forum"?

Lionel 10-14-2004 03:10 PM

I am getting somewhere :nervous:

I installed the BBmessenger hack. Was working well. In there, there is an instance where they say to put in vb licence number if asked. Was not asked and I did not put it, and it worked. Last week, for some reasons, I put in licence number but that was defined already in the code by doing a ../. Today, I removed it and I just got a PM from a member saying the scrolling message in there works again (did not even know that stopped). When I go on who's online, I am able to follow myself every where, without a problem. I still do not see any one, but at least I have no problem with two of me or the page not updating my location.

Is it possible to have such a thing caused by a double licence entry?

To answer this question: No. The constant VB_AREA just defines that you are in the forum, it doesn't have anything to do with the path.

Xenon 10-14-2004 04:17 PM

hmm, when you are getting logged out, or such problems, it may also be a glitch in sessions.php

did you change that file maybe?

Lionel 10-14-2004 04:22 PM

sessions.php ... I think I did. Thanks for the pointer. I hope I'll find something in there.

Lionel 10-14-2004 05:04 PM

well, I did a beyond compare, and the only thing that was changed in there was the Allow Guest to Choose Language hack, which was installed months ago. So back to square two.

At least I am beginning to see some people and I am able to follow myself without disruption. All this after I removed the licence number in BBmessenger hack.

Xenon 10-14-2004 05:15 PM

Maybe you should completely remove the bbmessenger hack then, and hope the problems will be removed as well?

Lionel 10-14-2004 06:07 PM

Xenon, I got happy a bit too fast... now it is square one instead of square two

Lionel 10-19-2004 12:16 PM

OK, looks like it is hanging in there. However I have a question: Is it normal for invisible admin to see admin activity in profile as offline? I see myself as such, but I see other's activity.

Lionel 11-04-2004 11:36 PM

After a month of troubleshooting, I noticed the following important point:

After the 900 seconds of inactivity, if I go back online, the whosonline is confused and not knowing where I am, it displays that I am looking at whosonline and regardless where i go, will not budged until I logout or log back in BUT if I log in admin, then everything is back to normal, and whosonline become alive.

Also if I logout without going into admin, and log back in, it will show two of me.

What could cause admin login to re-activate the session? Where can I look for that? I dissected my session.php already. What is different between admin CP and site?

Just so no one goes to the same miseries that I went thru, here was the problem.

After reading a post at vbulletin.com, looks like my problems were in the navbar. I had placed the loggedin info in the header, at the right of the logo.

At vbulletin.com I read that someone was constantly having an error when trying to log out, one of my symptom. The answer from the developper was to revert to the original navbar. Since mine was obviously messed up big time, I started from scratch, reverting the header and the navbar. Now, I do not have logout errors anymore, and most important, I do not see two of myself anymore plus I am beginning to see people online. And I can navigate away from site, who's online will not freeze anymore.

Moral of the story: Do not mess up with that navbar.
