How much bandwith does your site use?

All of a sudden our bandwith has shot up to around 500-700MB/day. I'm not sure it thats normal or what. The last few days, for some reason, we have had an average of 15-20 members on our forums with the max being 30.

With that said, do you think 500-700MB/day is high or to low. I'm just tyring to get a feel and see if my images may be to large or something

Thanks,

Erwin 09-10-2004 12:15 AM

Make sure you prevent hotlinking of images on your site using .htaccess or mod_rewrite. Other sites may be leeching your bandwidth.

AN-net 09-10-2004 01:04 AM

if you have cpanel and your host has hotlink protection use that feature;)

NawkOut 09-10-2004 01:26 AM

I use about 2 GB a day.

I'm not sure if its as much as that or if its just my files are to large and stuff. I do have a lot of images. Do you guys think that ammount is normal for a site with around 5-20 users online at once on the forums in the daytime?

I used hotlink from cpanel for a few days, then took it down because 1 of my members would just see a red X where all the pics where, no one else was reporting that problem. I figured if one can only see red X's, I'm sure their are more out their lol.

AN-net 09-10-2004 09:46 AM

well my site uses about 2gb a month and we only have like 35 tops online(which is usually google) but we usually have about 4-5 members on at one time.

Is that 5-20 for a 24hrs period? or 5-20 on all the time, I've just had a look and you had no members on and 4 guests, if it's 5-20 users in a 24hr period then 500-700MB is way too much transfer in a day, I don't have a big forum I have 15-25 regular members that visit everyday, I don't know how often the other 240 members visit, I do have a lot of guests and search engine spiders are there almost 24/7, 207 attachments that have been downloaded 5,515 times, and all of last month I only used about 1.6GB

Try installing PCFreaks stats hack it will give you loads of info about your forum, also if you have cpanel check the stats see if anyone is linking pictures to other websites, if they are change the pic for something naughty :D

chet 09-10-2004 03:20 PM

6 GIG a month, we get around 40,000 hits a day

Chet

deathemperor 09-11-2004 02:49 AM

my site got bandwidth limit exceeded in Junly with 10GB bandwidth, now we have 50GB bandwidth, sometimes google spiders come over 200 spiders at a time. I ought to use the robots.txt file to prevent them not going to link that useless for searching and they can't access (like new thread or new reply). alos I use .htaccess file to prevent hot linking from other sites.

BTW: is there a way to prevent any file we want ? like .mp3, .wma,... files, I have a jukebox but I don't want other sites use my music files.

Johnny 09-12-2004 02:12 AM

With around 100 members visiting a day and many unregistered visitors, I use up about 700mb a day. That's forum only. But I have many forums where people can attach pictures (walllpapers etc.). So that consumes much bandwith

Lqd 06-29-2006 01:46 PM

between 100 and 200mbit... That of course includes the audio stream as well.

rin 06-29-2006 03:08 PM

1.3 GB per Day. Having around 900 to 1000 People visiting my board everyday + Guests. Overall around 4000 People per day and a Traffic of 1.3 GB a day.

Ntfu2 06-29-2006 03:17 PM

on average over 15GB+ daily usually ends up around the 500GB monthly mark right now for my main one.

Getting ready to launch two more so its hard to tell :D

Guest210212002 06-29-2006 03:33 PM

248 gigs this month.

Kimmi 06-29-2006 08:38 PM

this month i have used 1677.78

Zachariah 06-29-2006 10:50 PM

avj. 4-5gigs month

PennylessZ28 06-30-2006 12:18 AM

The new site is has averaged 3 gigs the first month in May and up to 5 gigs this month in June, July looks promising for my christian brothers.

Not to sidetrack, or highjack the thread... But anyone else notice that this thread is from September of 2004?...

In your .htaccess file add the following code and change the site adress

Code:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://.*ayyas\.com.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^https://.*ayyas\.com.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}  !^.*warning\.gif$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^.*\.(swf|bmp|gif|jpg|png|jpeg|avi|wmv|mpg|mpeg|wav|mp3|rar|zip|JPG|GIF|Jpg|RAR|ZIP|Rar|Zip])$ http://www.ayyas.com/images/warning.gif [NC,R,L]

I only allow warning.gif to be displayed in other sites. You can create your own warning gif.

Last two month was slow for my board and my traffic was around 2-2.25 gb per day.

bang 06-30-2006 10:22 PM

100-150 TB/month

Lost, but not forgotten. I love messageboards :D .

bashy 07-01-2006 06:47 PM

It goes to show that some peeps actually do use the search button :)

peterska2 07-01-2006 06:57 PM

June was just over 1GB for the month. I'm averaging between 800MB and 1.5GB per month so far this year.

Yeah I know, most people use more than my monthly amount in a day.

Behemoth 07-02-2006 08:22 AM

In the past 31 days (one month), I have used 4028.21 MB, averaging 129.942 MB/day.

That doesn't count my FTP bandwidth, however, as that is not calculated into the bandwidth by my host. The FTP bandwidth is 18.31 MB for the past 31 days.

It's not a big site really...it surprises me that I'm using that much bandwidth even.

How long has your forum been up?

peterska2 07-02-2006 09:17 AM

3 years in August. We've just never been that busy.

titodj 07-05-2006 05:40 AM

On average 15-20 Gigs a day used to be 30-50 until I sarted using public services to make the new members upload their content.
Obviously an adult site....

rin 07-07-2006 09:21 AM

Can you tell me which public services you are using? :D

BamaStangGuy 07-09-2006 05:48 AM

Around 125GB a month now

BrandiDup 07-11-2006 03:41 PM

Not a lot, at the moment. Average is around 40-45GB a month. We do use a lot of database resources though
