Firefox != IE. Security != Insecurity. http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ .

If you don't feel like changing browsers, at least have a look at your security settings.
IE can also be setup to not just download everything that comes along. |
Is there anything wrong with firefox? will it like work fine with everything? these pop ups are driving me crazy now and grrrrrrrr its a new pc!! :( otherwise does anyone know of a nice freeeeeee ( we all want free stuff ) tool that will remove them

personaly i am still not a huge fan of Firefox. |
There is nothing at all wrong with Firefox.. great browser, built-in popup blocker, tabbed browsing.. that being said, sp2 for xp implements a lot of those same features in IE.. I am just not one for tied in to the OS apps such as the way Microsoft presents them..
for the free tools, i only use Spybot: Search and Destroy - http://security.kolla.de - for spyware based problems/popups/etc.. there is also adaware (i think that's the correct name) and a few others.. but i am not very familiar with any of those.. |
MindTrix - take a look at my stickied guide in regards to spyware/adware at the top of this forum :) It'll also show you how to beef up IE's security (prior to SP2)
|
Ok ill take a look, also i found the source of it all, a little program i downloaded last night called Messenger Plus :p Last time i had it, it was fine, for some reason this one came bundled with adware so i removed it and all seems well for now, but thats no reason not to beef up my security :)
|
i bloody hate them sites mate dont worry..... but the internet is becoming a bit of a joke these days :( adaware is free and finds all adware and cookies n stuff that might cause problems www.download.com is where i got that from
there was another one too i used but i forgot what its called, that was also really helpfull and free |
yeah i downloaded about 4 adware parasite adware etc programs, each finding different things somehow but blah :p
|
lol yeah its wierd how, one programme wont find all the different things and you need like 10 different programmes all to do the same job, but to make sure everything has been found

I am an Official Translator of Messenger Plus!, and all over the place we hear about people who download the software and just click Next and Agree like it was nothing. But this is where Plus is different. Next time, read the EULA or at least read the 2 radio buttons you are presented with at each install: () I AGREE, install the sponsor program () I REFUSE, do not install the sponsor program Now we all know you must have clicked AGREE, then next. Please be more observant next time. We do not like people claiming Messenger Plus! got unwanted adware. Yes it got adware, but only if you choose it. Please reinstall the program, this time clicking REFUSE unless you want to support Plus!, and enjoy the features :) Thanks for reading and understanding, NeoRevan Official Norwegian Plus! think mindtrix was saying he didn't knowingly download adware, meaning it didnt happen cause a misreading of an EULA but that evil popups and active-x flaws/javascript flaws in IE allowd them to download stuff to mindtrix's comp
anyways its happened to me and im still battling off one spyware/adware named DSO Exploit and one named Dialer-Gen>_< |
Oh. if thats what you meant, trix, then my apologies :)

Isn't the whole point to not be integrated with Windows?
|
Yep, I made this mistake on my first MsgPlus install, there's a screen which looks like a normal install screen, and basically it says do you want to install the sponsors stuff. It's easy enough to clear up. Just install some of the tools highlighted in my article :)

That is the sole reason I do not use IE for browsing anymore, with all the stuff going around now a days I just feel alot better browsing with firefox or anything thats not IE. I can deal with the extra milla-seconds firefox needs to start up, cause it is faster loading pages and I just like it alot better then IE. Of course if something better came along firefox would be deleted rather quickly. ;) |
come to think of it, it reminds me of a song i recorded for my webhost, about his IT teacher who taught them web design etc. His website was www.webcoacher.com and my webhost brought www.webcoacher.co.uk and copied his site exactly, yet just made it better which annoyed his teacher as far as threatenin to sue him.
So he wrote some lyrics, i cleaned them up and improved them, and then recorded it :p Its a song all bout web design stuff really so you lot might like it, gooooo on give it a listen ;) www.murderousemcees.com/music.htm Its at the bottom called Real Webcoacher |

that's also why i still like lynx for some quick browsing.. it's nice to see information and not the bloat that doesn't need to be there.. so yeah, firefox, imo, is better than IE.. notice the imo bit.. |
I have used Firefox for a while now as well and like it. I upgraded to Firefox 0.9.3 last night and my computer locked up when I tried to log in to my admin CP. No problems with 0.8 though.
AdAware and Spybot S&D are the only two I'll use since more so called spyware removal tools are coming with their own spyware. |
