PERL forum user -> PHP.
Hello,
Our site is currently using a PERL/SQL forum. We like it, but the host isn't sure. vBulletin seems to be a worthy alternative. Tried the demo at the official site, and I'm impressed. Skinning seems to be a pain though, for me that is. I'm happy to meet an active hack/support community. Not sure whether we'll migrate, but if we do it'll likely be this one. Are the importers/convertors part of the board? The 3.01 demo I tried didn't had it, but the FAQ said it had. How do these convertors work? I've seen that can import one backup and then add a second backup (merge) but also ones that delete number one to import two :( Is the [More] in the clickable smileys standard? |
You can download the importers at the members area on vb.com
You better check out at vb.com as we have not much to do with the importers here :) Yes, the [more] is standard. (if you have enough smilies ;)) |
Thanks Xenon,
I haven't purchased it yet, first want to know whether it's the right thing for us. Is it possible to merge imports? We should have some 200 smileys. |
As far as i know, you can merge as much boards as you want.
there is even a vb3 to vb3 importer, so yes merging is possible :) |
Truely great software then.
|
Definitelly, that's why we all use it ;)

The test
Closing tag doesn't work for highlight? I looked at the Admin demo and added a BB code. Neat. Is it possible to use color codes from the CSS for text colors, so text for the [spoiler] tag would use the post background color for each skin? Green text in the green skin, blue text in the blue skin. This would work, but doesn't look as great for some skins imho. Highlight to read. <p><font color="#000000"><span style="background-color: #000000">text</span></font> something like <p><font color="$.alt1">text</font> |
It must be possible since the highlight seems to do the same. :)

Quickreply.

many features you may miss with the demo (or this same site here) are possible, as for the latest version, coders like me or Xenon have built about 350 modifications that would enhance even more your own board, to your own tastes... you can even make a request for needed features... because our community of coders is around 100 dedicated code wizards that code hacks and mods each days...

Thanks for the quick reply nexialys. I've browsed around and I'm very impressed.

Someone posted a great spoiler bbcode that uses collapsable tables. Maybe a bit easier than going CSS and havinig to highlight everything.
|
There are alot of spoiler bbcodes and hacks for hiding posted text out there. A good thing about php is that you can run it without cgi on apache, and it is a little more flexible then perl. I moved from perl to php some years back and it was rather easy to jump right into php and do just about everything that I wanted.

you can use css in the custom bbcodes, but $alt isn't css but a variable, and you cannot use php vars in the bbcodes. A small but important difference :) |

I mean to thank everyone here.

Another question. And I ask because I saw an import messed for another board. I thought it was, but there was a display switch.
Normally the ID of a post is directly linked to the posting date. So, it doesn't matter for the topic view whether it's sorted by date or ID. We have merged backups though and this causes sorting by post ID to look completely different from sorting by date (don't ask :D ). How does vB do it? Sort by date, ID or can you choose? |
vb's default is sorting by date.
That was beacause of an old mysql bug sometimes overwriting deleted old ID's But actaully it's easy to change if you want to do so ;) (just a little hacking :)) |
