What features would you like to see on vbulletin.org in the future
Ok, it's you time now.
Since i'll have holidays in about 3 weeks, i'll get more free time, to spend on coding etc. I have already plans about some features i will add, soon (when i coded them) But if there is something you really want to see here, feel free to post now. Of course i cannot promise to code everything mentioned, but every idea will be considered, and if we think it's doable, and usefull to improve the Quality of Vbulletin.org, then we'll do it :) |
I was thinking about this last night... these may already be here, but I've not spotted them yet (and I'm still new to vb.org!).
A way to get a list of all your Installed mods - much easier to find which have been updated etc. How about if you click Update, you are automatically subscribed to weekly updates on the thread? Or - you get an email if the first post in the thread is updated, so you know if new releases come out? Or allowing the thread poster to email all those who've clicked Install? |
Its in your usercp. Found here https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/vborg_mis...installedhacks And the hack author has the ability to send an email update to all the users that have clicked the install button.

The return of the Hack database.
|
@Chris: write it, and i'll implement it ^^
as we have said already, the Hacks DB was redundant, and therefore won't be back again. but i have still plans to make the hack releases more comfortable, to get back a bit of the old touch :) @Sabe: well, the hack faq is answered already, that's nothing to implement, but need the will of the authors to do so. so we can think about a more automatic system, when authors start to provide FAQ's, but an Empty FAQ doesn't help i think :( thread two is noted, will see, what i can do from those suggestions :) hmm, query less isn't doable automatically, but i may add a tickbox for the authors if the hack uses queries, they have to tick it. we'll see :) |
The faq would be a really usefully feature as some hacks span hundreds of pages and sometimes a solution is present on page 65 between 10 pages of 'converstation'.
Perhaps the members can click a tick box on a post and make that a faq item? I am not sure how wise that would be may be but maybe it can be limited to people matching a certain criteria like post count of time registered on vb.org. This would also be handy because sometimes a person in the thread will ask for a certian kind of modification and someone other than the hack author might post the snipits of code to make it happen. You should also add the mod permission hack so you can release it to the rest of us ;) |
Xenon, please go back to opening attachment in a new window as it used to be.. since hacks rely heavily on screenshots :)
I hate it when I close the window and then oopsssssssssss :) its not easy to remember to do right click or hold SHIFT thnx |
Xenon on leave ^_^ thats good.
My small list: 1. Ability to open attachments in new window -> not sure why was this removed. 2. Ability to find, who are the users who have installed a specific hack. 3. Getting an email response, for every updated hack. @ the moment i have lots of hacks installed but i get a response only on few of them when those are updated. 4. Some sort of DB for users, which can help them to locate the hacks listed. in other words, there are lots of threads etc. in all forums and its a pain to find out the hacks, which are there but cant find it ;) 5. Will update this post again ^_^ |

Erm, in response to many who wish to have links in in a new window - Google and DMOZ etc., penalize sites that do that as having too many 'pop-ups' - what this means is if you have a site with lots of durned interesting links, Alexis et. al. will penalize you for having too many 'pop-ups' regardless of the fact that they are user initiated. I personally have seen a site with NO pop-ups listed as having over 82% of the sessions having pop-ups, which steers traffic away. They really need to discrimiate 'tween user initiated links and unwanted automatic advertorials, etc...
Just my 2 cents... |
@Merja: hmm, i don't know myself why the Devs did so, but i'll consider this on another thing i'll doing ;)
@Reeve: hmm, i might come up with such a system, there seems to be interest in, i just have to think about how to to it exactl. btw. what do you mean with mod permission hack? @San-Deep: 2: Sorry, can't do that, as it would be a security risk. Imagine a bug is found in a hack someone has installed, if you know he has installed that hack, you can use this bug to get into his board or something like.... 3: Well, that's not a feature. The Authors can send out update emails whenever they update a hack. But it's nothing i can change if the author doesn't send out the mail ^^ 4: Hmm, can you be more specific? the searchengine allows you to search in special forums only, so you have the chance to just search through all releases but nothing more? Or am i getting something wrong now? @new page attachments: hmm, maybe just making it a useroption if nescesary ^^ |
I think a monthly email newletter would be really nice. Something like what SitePoint has, except maybe with more relevent content and links to content. :)
Also, I think maybe having a nice "info box" next to hack download threads, displaying vital information such as compatibility information, whether or not the author is able to provide support, any hacks that may interfere with it, any potential bugs, etc. Somebody needs to fix the HTML in the chat page. I think the CSS or something isn't linked right. :p And finally... BRING BACK THE BUNNY SMILIE!!!!!!!! :ninja: |
newsletter would be good.. maybe have it list the latest hack releases with links to those hacks as well as a mini-description.. seems like that has a good way of maybe getting the community back into the vB.org community.. also, maybe ask for small tutorial contributions for the news letters from various coders.. things like that..

* In the forum drop down box at the bottom of the page, would it be possible to have the full release old style search button added?
|
Hm, a weekly/monthly newsletter with a list of recently released hacks, or maybe just the top "installed" hacks of those released within that week/month, might be cool.
I don't often read the "latest hacks" table, as I'm heavily occupied with work, and for that reason it might help to know what's been missed. This article thing also sounds like an interesting idea. If you could have a section where developers can submit articles concerning vBulletin, or PHP/MySQL-in-general, related stuff (think Sitepoint articles) that would be cool as a community thing. |
something more aesthetic than coding, could we have the link to old layout provided in the same fashion that vBT does it? with the brackets on the same line so you can access it via the breadcrumb?
|
maybe in a coder's dropdown box on posts or in profile it could list his/her hacks so maybe if a user likes the what the coder presents himself in forum he/she may be interested in his/her hacks
|
Email newsletter would be good if done properly.
More frequent news on front of the site too :) |
Well, more frequent news, isn'T as easy.
When there is nothing new, what should we post there? ^^ |
If people have time to work on vb.org, I suggest three things:
1. Run through vb3 hacks and make sure things are in proper category. Nonfunctional hacks probably belong in Beta. Some hacks are trivial and might belong in Mini-Mods. Just a quick review to make sure things are consistent. 2. Someone (anyone) can start a list of new hacks released this week. (Edit: This would be a continuing feature, so it would be good to designate a moderator to do this!) Just a single post or new thread in an appropriate forum. It helps people who value this site but only manage to visit 2-3 times a month. Right now I need to sort by "old layout" and go back two weeks, sifting through hacks I have already gone through because someone bumped the support thread. 3. Either quickly finish or definitively cancel all the stuff that has been previously discussed or promised. Many normal people start with vb3 now, it is nice to have a fresh slate and give closure to past issues. Thanks to all of the volunteers! |
how about add a user profile field where users can use it as a hack wishlist;)
|
Some authors in the title of hack state which version of vb its compliant with. When a new release of vb comes out, sometimes people install it and see everything is working okay. It would be nice if a user could update that to say it works with vb3.x.x. I know the authors can but alot forget to and it just makes things easier.

How about the Newsletter we spoke about before vB3 came out??
|
some hack attachments named readme or install or instructions or....
could we have the files names related to the hack names? also when updating a hack it would be nice to change the file name by adding a # or something I seen hacks that I downloaded long ago and they were updated but I didn't know cuz the file name never changed !!! |
A separate forum for people to ask vB questions instead of bringing it to The Lounge.
Also the suggestions that Merjawy has just put forth. |
I really dislike the fact that I have to leave one site to go to another for questions/answers regarding vb hacks and/or template mods.
It's equivalent to entering 1 store and being sent to another store across the street. I know you probably will not enact anything like this ... but I think it would benefit everyone if VBORG & VBTEMPLATES was one. You don't even have to integrate the 2 sites - just fetch thread/posts from specific forums. Everyone will benefit ... you, me, vb.org, and vbtemplates.com. ALSO: Enable the abilty to insert images within posts. For example, if I created/added an article it would be nice to "place" images where I want them. Not at the bottom of the post. |
A forum for calendar hacks?
|

never noticed, that there isn't one ^^ i have created it now, and moved some of the newer calendar mods in. if you find others, which aren't in that category, feel free to report the thread so the mods can move it :) |
I like this place....
sure you could over-complicate it, but I dont think its necessary. There are lots of features here people don't even know about. You guys do good work :) I only have one small thing to mention... and that is... rename forumID 8 to "Modification Requests" (this is currently the Hack Requests forum in the vb2 section) While I have no need for vb2 anymore, I just think it was the original intent to name those forums the same thing, but somehow it was overlooked :) Again... you guys do great work, and I am very often impressed by what I see here. |
Well, actually the plan was to get rid of the word hack with time going by.
the vb2 was just left, so that people get not confused on the first day after the restructurisation. but yes, i'll rename it now :) |
ahh Understood... so we should call them Mods for preference?
I started off calling them mods, but since spending time here, I've learned to call them hacks :) |
Well, you can of course call them as you prefere to do, but we want to avoid beein regarded as Hackers which break into other servers and such.
We have had such problems already ;) |
ahh... I see the issue :)
It seems ignorance is only bliss for the ignorant himself. |

I'd like to see the first post in hack threads use a differnt postbit style for the release bits, it could give people that 'hack db' feel back :) |
pssst, don't tell my plans ^^
|
I agree with that Brad :)
