ChocoJournal 2.5b - vBulletin Journals

I've had a custom journal system at my site called ChocoJournal running vBulletin 3. It's proven to be extremely popular on my board and is a work in progress.

Within a one year period, these are some numbers:
Total Entries: 29,559
Total Journal Views: 1,352,226
Total Comments: 101,983

Here are some of the features:
  • Complete integration with vBulletin 3 (postbits and profiles)
  • Anyone can start a journal with two clicks.
  • Simple quick commenting system
  • Top 10 Journals by Warks function which uses a complex formula to calculate popular journals.
  • Ability to search Journals entries.
  • Integration with vBulletin's Buddlist.
  • Option to create private entries (only buddies can view)
  • Option to view most recent entries from all buddy journals on one page.
  • Comment tracker system showing you the latest 50 comments made in journal.
  • Ability to view last 20 comments made by any user.
  • Full integration of vBcode / smilie code in comments / entries.
  • Journal control panel
  • Journal ban list allows users to ban users/guests from viewing and commenting in your journal.
  • Journal custom image allows users to upload a custom journal banner that will be displayed at the top of their journal.
  • Users can put custom static messages in their journal.
  • Random journal entry on the front of the journal system.

Check it out here:

If enough people are interested, I might package it for release. :)

TheComputerGuy 06-28-2004 10:00 AM

Come now...there is plenty of interest to see this come about :)

Oblivion Knight 06-28-2004 11:30 AM

This would make my YEAR to see this released..
I've been a big fan of your ChocoJournal since it's creation during the vB2 days.

An importer for vBJournal entries would also be nice.! :nervous:

HellRazor 06-28-2004 06:12 PM

I hope you don't run off again, because I'm sure you'd get a hell of a lot of installs. ;)

It looks great. I know if it was released, I would install it.

momzone 07-07-2004 07:59 PM

Any update on this?

kira 07-07-2004 09:36 PM

Don't mean to be a downer, because this is an excellent system without a doubt, and I know I (and many others) would love it to be released.

But I seem to remember this same type of post two years ago from this very poster: "I've created this kickass journal system, maybe would release it, hmm, would anyone be interested?" Eighteen kabillion pages of enthusiastic "hell yeah!"s and only one or two follow-ups from the originator later, it became apparent that gamingforce was not returning to his thread, which was still going even as late as a year later. Much disappointment ensued.

So please, with sugar on top, don't tease us or toy with our hopes, O gaming force! :D Only show us the yummy candy if you genuinely plan on sharing it with us.

Because it really really looks amazing and I really really want it. :D :D

Osterling 07-07-2004 10:01 PM

Maybe this is just an attempt to advertise his site.. :ermm: and like last time has no real intention in releasing his hack

Deska 07-08-2004 11:57 AM

I need it
I need it
.............. 1000x

sucks...

Osterling 07-08-2004 07:07 PM

i really feel this is a low way to get people to his forum... if he has done it before, and so many people wanted it but he never released his copy.. and he is just redoin that again with vb3..

it's wrong.. it's that simple

Oblivion Knight 07-08-2004 07:13 PM

What's wrong is people coming here with completely the wrong attitude, demanding that he share his code and accuse him of trying to gain members to his forum..

He has an active and successful site, he doesn't exactly need the extra traffic.

It's things like this that make hack authors leave vb.org and cease sharing their work..

Reeve of shinra 07-08-2004 07:56 PM

This is not about Gaming Force of the chocojournal hack but rather an overall observation of mine in response to Oblivion Knights comment:

I think that goes both ways though cause alot of people say they are going to make this hack or that hack, get everyone hyped up and simply disapear off the planet with never a word more about it, not even to say that they werent working on it anymore. I think when people see a person working on a hack, they then stop trying. I mean look at something like the store, if someone came and said that they have one 90% complete - I am not going to go through all that work and effort just to recreate teh wheel.

It's not me demanding, but being teased...

agree

Casparian 07-09-2004 12:46 AM

I absolutely love your journal system, and really hope you release it!

grandma2 07-09-2004 04:28 AM

lol. Gamingforce, you are one cruel dude dangling that carrot out in front of us like that. hehehehehe.

Seriously, it looks great. I say we nominate it for hack of the month even before it's released.

Grandma

Osterling 07-09-2004 04:52 AM

I don't mean too come off rude, but I looked at the one link that led to his post for vb2, and how many people wanted it... and it was never released, so I highly doubt he will release this one either...

Which upsets me, because why would you do this and not release it? That's just cruel, and it's not like I am demanding him too, I just think it's wrong to tease people over a hack that every knows people want for vb3.

If he made a post for vb2 and never released the hack even though many people wanted it, why would he release his vb3 version?

kira 07-09-2004 09:51 PM

I just want to emphasize that I only brought this up not to accuse gamingforce of self-promotion (I don't believe I did that), but to let people know that this may be the beginning of a loooooong thread that ends up nowhere fast.

I certainly don't demand that he release this hack at all. None of us are owed a freebie, and some hackers want their work to remain specific to their own boards. I can understand that.

However, gamingforce planned to release the hack -- at least, he stated back in 2002 that he'd release his hack if people wanted it. We said we did. Two years later, we still got nuttin' but vaporware. :(

So if you do genuinely plan on releasing it, gamingforce, please do and get ready to be showered with gratitude and acclaim! But if not, please don't be a "hack tease" (hee, did I just coin that?) -- just post your site in the "Forum Commenting" area and let us salivate in helpless jealousy. :D

Osterling 07-09-2004 09:55 PM

kira... i agree, none of us are demanding it, but we are just upset because we are feeling teased, because he did it way back and never released his hack even though alot of people wanted it...

it's okay with me if you don't want to release your hack for free, let alone at all.. but don't sit there and tease us, ya know.

Gamingforce 07-09-2004 10:18 PM

It's rather upsetting to see people accuse me of self promotion. Why would I promote on a community full of vBulletin owners? :p It just doesn't make any sense. After reading parts of this thread, I lost some motivation, but I'm glad to see the amount of interest there is for a release. I coded this journal system a few years ago and was one of my first php projects of all time. I learned a lot by coding this journal system and looking back at some parts of the journal system written a few years ago, it needs to be updated.

The are parts of the journal code that have harded coded material (including HTML and phrases). Also I have not security checked everything in the journal system so I gotta make sure all the holes are fixed before releasing it. If your code is not public, it's a lot more secure than non-public code because the potential holes are not so obvious. This thread was created to re-gauge the amount of interest for such a hack because I do not feel like it's release quality yet. Running a design firm, I'm a strong believer of secure, bug-free code, so I will not release it until I feel it is.

For all of you skeptics out there, please do not judge me as just doing this for my own benefit because there really is no benefit. I do it because I want to help everyone's community expand to new levels and allow a higher amount of interation between your members. It's really upsetting to see certain people arguing over whether I'm going to release it or not because it's taking a long time. If you don't think it's worth waiting, it looks like there are a bunch of other journal systems people are putting together. Even though mine has been in development for two years, it's been battle tested by thousands of users. They give me the feedback necessary to make the system professional grade, so not only my community can benefit but also potentially yours.

Here are the latest changes for Version 2.6

[ New Feature ]
You can now add a custom name for "comments" in your journal entry. This is the word that is displayed next to the number of comments the entry has. The default setting is "comments". You can add anything you want though as long as it contains less than 10 lowercase letters. This can be changed on the Journal Settings page.

[ New Feature ]
Comments can now be edited in journals. Only the original commenter can edit the comment. Journal owners are still able to delete any comments from their own journals.

[ New Feature ]
Page navigation feature for entries has been added. Although you can still view all entries on one page if you wish, the page navigation breaks it down by 10 per page. A future update will allow you to set the number of entries you wish to view per page via the Options panel.

[ Updated Feature ]
The Mood part of the New/Edit Entry pages have been updated with a 10 charcter text box. This replaces the old pulldown menu. You can fill this box with letters or a GFF smiley of your choice.

[ Bug Fix ]
Smilies / VBCode are now displayed properly on the Most Recent Buddy Entries page.

[ Optimization ]
The Most Recent Buddy Entries page has been slightly optimzed for speed.

[ Security ]
Extra data checking / security code added to some journal functions.

[ Visible Fixes ]
The extra linebreak between the navigation bar and main journal content has been removed. Various phrases and other small design aspects have been modified as well.

[ New Feature ]
You can now search in comments. It works similar to the entry search and only the 100 newest comments are displayed. To use it, go to the search section on the main ChocoJournal page and select "comments" from the pulldown menu.

TheComputerGuy 07-10-2004 01:13 AM

this is nice!!! good work gaming force...if you needa beta test I am at your service.

kira 07-12-2004 01:25 AM

It sounds great, as I've mentioned a couple of times. Obviously, as that last thread aptly showed, there is plenty of interest in a feature-rich journal hack.

For the life of me I don't know why you'd be "unmotivated" just because I or anyone else said we were disappointed that you never released the hack last time -- to the contrary, it seems like it'd give you extra impetus to get it in tip-top shape and finish the darn thing for everyone to enjoy! I mean, jeeze, we wouldn't have been disappointed if we hadn't anticipated the release so enthusiastically! That's proof of audience appreciation right there.

So best of luck to you, whatever happens, and keep us updated please!
