Hey all,
I've recently migrated from phpnuke to vB and vbAdvanced. I've created a custom green theme (Marijuana Theme) and a headerless, wide screen version (the default). No registration required to run through themes if your curious.

I've incorporated a couple hacks, a couple good ideas and even some custom scripting to program articles to be posted at a preprogrammed time. Once the article is posted into the "news" forum it shows up on index via vbadvanced.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments.

I'd be interested in any thoughts on the current use of the domain as well. You think my site works for Marijuana.Com or would you do something way different? I love to get all kinds of ideas and work them into something real.

PS - Ganja isn't as bad for you as commonly thought. You can't overdose, and studies show that even though reaction time is slowed, stoned drivers are more careful! Let (legal) drugs such as alcohol make such claims.

Christine is right - One shouldn't drive while stoned. Reaction times might be slowed enough that you won't be able to avoid that drunk driver in your lane.

You need to make the vBulletin copyright clearly visible on your forums page and the copyright for your home page needs to also be clearly visible.

Brian from vbAdvanced said that copyright (vb OR vbadvanced) was not necessary on the index page. He mentioned he had discussed this with vbulletin staff and they told him vb copyright is not needed as vbadnced is NOT vbulletin - plus I donated to his project.

vBulletin copyrights ARE in place. Due to a fading background, sometimes the copyright is more visible than othertimes, however, the copyright is in place and is CLEARLY VISIBLE.

I hold three vb licenses and have never had any trouble from vB regarding any of them.

Boofa - double check with Brian if you would like - and as far as the vb copyrights are concerned, im pretty satisfied by the lack of contact from vb that the copyrights are ok.

After speaking with a Jelsoft representative if you use any vB code which vBadvanced does then you are required to have visible vBulletin copyright in the footer :)

if you guys want to argue about copyright bs - then argue by yourselves. vB gets my money - they dont need my advertising too. When/if they provide a supported front page for MY SITE, then I'll post their copyright, however it falls on the background

I suppose this is the type of stuff that is setup for courts to decide, though. So, we're really just wasting time here.

I cant believe the politics - Is it the Marijuana or the copyright?

What Dean said is correct. A copyright is needed on any page that is using vB code. Unless of course you have purchased the bradning free option.

So what your saying is that every hack ever made is vbulletin copyright because it uses vb code to one degree or another and must carry the vb copyright??? I think there is some misunderstanding of copyright issues here. Unfortunately the copyright holder of vbadvanced hasn't spoken on this regard as I am merely going from Brian told me, and common sense.

Steve, I dont think what Dean said is correct. Lots of programmers have developed code to take advantange of the core vb engine. Those codes are not vb copyright becuase they use vb code. Please explain this to me further.

If this is the case, would that also include any codes that also used the same database as vbulletin? I've got a programmed news script that I want to release, but not under vb copyright. Im just curious as to where exactly vBulletin Copyright ends so I can be sure to not violate in my future scripting.

Obviously the php sql isnt vb copyright, cause it may be necessary to use some identical queries(?).

I have given you my opinion on this. Feel free to send in a support ticket and we can refer it to the lawyers for a more detailed answer. I'd rather not spend the money to do this but if it's that important to you then this is what we need to do.

One of those lines used vB code as your including the vB engine therefore its using a lot of vBulletin code.

I contacted vB support back in December of 2002 to ask if the vBulletin copyright info was necessary on other pages that included vBulletin files, but were not created by Jelsoft. Steve answered the ticket and asked for me to give him some examples. I gave him the homepage and a couple of others on my personal site and his reply was this:

Since these are not vB generated pages then I don't believe the copyright is absolutely necessary. I'm not sure I understand your desire to remove it but that's your call.

So that's what I've been going by and told others the couple of times that the question has come up. If this is no longer the case please let me know so that I can be sure to give the correct information should the question ever come up again. :)

I think this should really be clarified. I was going under the assumption that vb add ons were just that, add ons. Since these "hacks" are not supported at all by vbulletin I have a hard time understanding the logic here. However, I'm not trying to start a fight over copyright and would be happy to include them if necessary.

I actually dont need support on this, Steve, so there is no need for a trouble ticket, I dont think... More confusion. :ermm:

I must apologize. The copyright I was referring to when all of this started was the copyright on your forumhome not being clearly visible, although the one on your homepage was questionnable to me at the time. In the past others have tried to hide it the way you did on the forumhome and it was not alllowed then and isn't really allowed now. That was what I was questioning. How it got to be solely about the homepage, I don't know. So, my apologies for not explaining myself better in the beginning. ;)

Boofo - thanks for the clarification. I honestly have/had no intention of "hiding" the copyright. I created a fading/blending background and depending on how long the page is the copyright is sometimes more visible than others. I assure you that hiding the vb copyright was not the intent when creating the background.

Even on that page it is still very difficult for me to see the copyright.

The only thing I could suggest (since this is a forum commenting forum) is that you could make a it a light green.

Maybe doing the copyright in white text might fix the problem on a background that lands wrong because the page is too long. Or you could do like I did and just purchase the branding free option. ;)

As far as the homepage goes, I always understood that since it does use forms of vB code, then the vB copyright has to be there. There's really no way around a homepage the incorporates itself into vBulletin not using vBulletin code itself to do so, so that would make the copyright necessary, I think. At least that was always my understanding of the issue. ;)

The copyright on the footer could be changed to something like gray and still be pretty visible, I would think...I'll try it now, let me know.

Hrm, I found the branding free option, but dont see a way to purchase it through the vb site...I must be blind, or maybe this needs to be a special request.

It's in there uder your license info listed as extras or other stuff or something like that. They lowered the price to 120.00 now. ;)
