Legend of the Red Dragon

Hey. Check this out.. Anyone who used BBSes back in the 80s will be happy to see that this old game is back - now on the web.

Good old Seth Able. I was hoping he would bring it to the web eventually. Apparently he abandoned it. Great game. Had it on my BBS. Loved it! ;)

But it was called Legend of the Red Dragon back then. ;)

Yes, sir, I did. Bear Facts and later Bear Facts II. I was a member of FidoNet which actually started about 10 miles from me. I ran Spitfire BBS (which was born about 15 miles from me). I knew Mike Woltz (the author of Spitfire) very well. ;)

I even started my own message net, XeroNet. Didn't do very well, but it was a blast anyway. I really miss those days. Do you remember FrontDoor?

It was a bit before my time, but in the early 90's I was dailing up to a few bbs's, wasent to savy back then so I never became a big member of any bbs, but they sure where cool.

Anyone remember getting booted because your modem was to slow? ;)

We started out on a 300 Baud modem and graduated up to 2400 Baud. Then U.S. Robotics came out with their screaming 9600 baud modem and we were in heaven. You guys today have no idea what a slow modem is like. ;)

Xenon 05-11-2004 09:28 PM

Ok, that's also before my time now...
i started with a 14.400 baud modem, and if you compare that to DSL nowadays, outch ^^

Try comparing 2400 Baud to cable. LOL

Not to mention available as an open source project for anyone with PHP and MySQL to download and install:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/lotgd

Boofo 05-11-2004 10:05 PM

Who wants to be the lucky person to help me set this up and test it on my crappy board? ;)

Steve Machol 05-11-2004 10:39 PM

Like Boofo I started out with a 300 baud modem. Of course that was before eb-browsers and everything was text-based. There was something neat about watching the letters being displayed on the screen one at a time. :D

Brad 05-11-2004 10:42 PM

Thanks for the sourceforge link, I just downloaded the source, going to play with it myself some.

I set this up about 6 months ago and it was popular for a while. It definately uses alot of page views.

That was a time when even color codes made things go slower. And forget about ANY kind of graphics at that speed. ;)

It was almost like watching a manual typewriter in action. ;)

Boofo 05-11-2004 11:34 PM

Ok, I got it up and running on my site if anyone is interested in trying it out. Just click on the create a character link on the left and you will be ready to go.

I got killed the very first day. ;)

These kinds of games will never lose their flare. They take a lot more thinking and skill than the shoot-em-ups that are big today. These are classics! ;)

Fluous 05-12-2004 04:25 PM

In the early days of 2400 and 9600 Baud, these were the only kinds of games that could run half-way decent. ;)

Check out the link to my game setup, Brad, and join in. ;)

That's because you have to start at the top of the list and work your way down. If you try to jump ahead on the list she usually will not respond or responds in a way that you don't want her to. ;)

Sal Collaziano 05-12-2004 10:23 PM

Wow! I didn't realize this would turn into such a big topic! Yes, I started way back in the days of 300 baud as well. I ran a BBS on a Commodore 64 using Perspective Software's C-Net.. I swapped my 300 baud for a 1200 baud (they looked almost identical) and boy was that nice..

Around September of 1989 I got a car and left the computer work for about 5 years. When I got back with an Amiga 500, I was running 14.4 and that was pretty quick. My next computer was a Pentium.. :p

Sal Collaziano 05-12-2004 10:59 PM

Wow. I've got 44 people signed-up so far in not even a day. Imagine this game still being a hit today?

But it really isn't the same game. This is a "cheap knockoff" (how they advertise it) of the original by Seth Able. There will never be another Legend of the Red Dragon like the one Seth wrote. It was a one of a kind. ;)

Does anyone remember another one of my favorites, Usurper? ;)

True, but being it's still in beta, you never know what the final version will be like...

Since they haven't done a whole lot to it since August of 2003, it will probably be forgotten in beta for quite a while. I haven't noticed any problems at all with it so far.

The authors of the game are running it and haven't released it yet as far as I know. If you find out where to get it, let me know. ;)

Sal Collaziano 05-13-2004 04:25 PM

Will do...

Sal Collaziano 05-13-2004 04:26 PM

In the meantime.. What do you think of this one?
