vBulletin.org Style Competition Deadline: 1st of May

Hey there,

As you know we have an ongoing style competition announced in this thread.

I want to mention that deadline for the contest is May 1 so if you consider joining in, hurry! :)

You can read the rules in the announcement thread but to recap:
* You must have a valid vBulletin license to join
* The style you submit should be created by you.
* You can submit multiple Styles
* You have to submit the style.xml, buttons (names as on standard vb3), psd's of the buttons, a screenshot of how the style will look.

Some other points:
* The winner of the competition will get a vb license courtesy of Jelsoft. Runner up will get a hivemail license courtesy of Hivemail. Winner will also get a custom title here in vb.org and his username will be mentioned in the footer of his style.
* We'll use the winner style here in vb.org and we want it unique to our site so it shouldnt be resold or distributed by its author before or after the competition.
* We are not looking for something complicated or heavy in graphics! All we want is a nice HEADER, FOOTER and NAVBAR, as well as BUTTONS and COLOR SCHEME. It is even ok if you don't modify any other templates than header, footer and navbar.
* If we don't like any of the submitted styles, we will not choose a winner. (Jury is vb.org staff) :o
* You can submit your styles in the Style Contest Forum. In this forum you see only threads you started so forum's being empty does not mean you are the only competitor ;)

Good luck to you all!

lol sounds like your in a hurry to see the new style :p

BlackxRam 03-30-2004 08:24 AM

I think its a good idea. It means people dont have the luxury of checking out other boards to top them. They submit what they have NOW and only now... i like the time limit. :) Good on ya Logician and crew!

Logikos 03-30-2004 08:35 AM

Its about time this ends soon. Been going on snice Jun 2003. :)

I agree with you but considering the fact that gold is due recently, it would have been meaningless to have the style for beta versions.

with all the errors dark blue is giving me, i just wanna get on a nice dark colour scheme with minimal images.

Gizmo 03-30-2004 10:10 AM

Is it possible to participate if the style is created by several people, I mean by our team, and not by just one person?

Ya i understand were you comming from Logician.

sabret00the 03-30-2004 10:33 AM

my guess is yes although you'll have to submit through one individual who can collect on the prize

We would want one person to be responsible of this style so that he would allow us to use it here and agree to not to distribute it to other sites and collect the prize as well. As you can guess we wouldn't want several people showing up later and claim the style belongs to them ;) So as soon as one invidual holds the legitimate ownership of the style, I guess it is not important to us how many people gave an hand to create it.

i didn't say that, although i'm sure i could if i put my mind too it. but i was referring to the fact they've had months it shouldn't take more than 2 months to update the templates.

Innovation to a small extent is important. What I would hate to see is another one of those styles that are so heavily modified around images, that it just glomps the whole page together in one messy compacted look.

Something simple yet professional appearing, and carefully designed, like the Sitepoint forums. Whatever style is made, I think there should be a light and dark version of it. Some people, like myself, enjoy high contrast colors (like the blue version of vB.org). Being a coder, and spending many many hours at the PC, bright colors just kill your eyes. On the other hand, others would find bright colors to be more appealing.

If I had the time, I'd give a shot into this contest..

You're a member of the Staff, so now you have a voice in the jury, but cannot join the contest :p

Salazar 03-30-2004 05:06 PM

My style is nearly finished. :nervous:

The status icons are the only problem left. :ermm:

Xenon 03-30-2004 06:29 PM

You have one month left, so you should be able to finish them ;)

WoodiE 03-31-2004 02:12 AM

I didn't realize this contest was still going - man it's had to been up for months now.

Gio Takahashi 03-31-2004 06:59 AM

I still need to finish my style not sure wether to actually submit this or not.

sabret00the 03-31-2004 07:30 AM

hm, might actually submit my sites new vb3 style. have to think about that.

Gio Takahashi 03-31-2004 08:06 AM

erm, what if the style actually has major template modification, IE Postbit and userinfo?

well it is a choice of designer but I can say that such a style does not have much chance. We are looking for something simple and clean as announced. We are already hacked and have potential to be hacked more so a lot of changes in the templates is not something we are looking for.

Xenon 03-31-2004 01:00 PM

Or to be more specific: If we are not pleased by some changes we'll just overwrite them.

So the most important thing is the style / colors / buttons /header / footer part.
if you have an overwhelming postbit idea but we don't like it, your style can win as well, but we'll most likely remove the postbit-changes then

And no one thought about this prior to starting the contest?

we thought about it, but we never thought, the devs would need soo long time until gold is finished ;)

you may remember there were some dateline when gold should have arrived in the past ;)

Actually noone knew gold would take this long to arrive.

AshAbed 04-01-2004 07:48 PM

I'll work on it... only problem is I normally get $250 for a skin lol, but since I have noone to do work for right now I'll probably enter... would you prefer the skin to be a darker themed skin or lighter one?
Thanks

sabret00the 04-01-2004 07:48 PM

i think the best option would've been to have finalists at the stage of gold and then give them 2 weeks to update templates.

Xenon 04-01-2004 07:50 PM

well, we decided to put the deadline to 1 May, so everyone get's a chance to start a new style as well now.

the more the better i'd say :)

Well, you have to imagine the free advertising place you get.
as you will be mentioned with a link in the footer, i think it's worth ;)

as for preferences: everyone in the staff has different opionions about what is a good style and what isn't.
As we have two winning places, i think we'll choose one lighter and one darker, so every user on vb.org will be pleased, but of course, nothing could be said 100% sure, as it depends on all the netries :)

the thought of paying more for an add-on than the actual product disgusts me for some reason, however i do beleive i might have to start making skins ;) :p

* You have to submit the style.xml, buttons (names as on standard vb3), psd's of the buttons.
This should be required only if the entry is a winner.
A professional would never submit original work unless paid for (in this case, choosen as a winner).

A screenshot(s) should be enough to satisfy requirements.

If accepted, styles should be XHTML & CSS valid.

Dean C 04-02-2004 02:16 PM

I'm pretty sure that only the winner is required to submit the files... But as an entrant you should provide us with screenshots of all the areas along, or alternatively a live demo :) The more information you can provide us the better we can assess the style.

Xenon 04-02-2004 09:04 PM

You do not have to provide the psd's and xml's when you enter your style, but you have to when you win.

also screenshots are not "really" enough, so you better set up a testboard, or submit the xml and the jpgs, so we can test it in private

Would love to get in this, but i think my skins are tooo complicated to your liking. I have been in the process of makin this nice pro and clean style, and created psd's of almost every page ( index, postbit, usercp ) and if I would have known that this was still goin on, I would have been tryin to code it awhile ago. But if you guys ever run another contest i might consider joining it :)

sabret00the 04-03-2004 08:29 AM

you should definately enter than skin, a dark version of that would be great :)

Dean C 04-03-2004 11:10 AM

Looks great Paris :)! You should submit it

Admin 04-03-2004 11:18 AM

Submit that skin Paris, it's very nice. With a bit more contrast it would be even better. :)
