Post Icons as Drop Down Menus

Using Post Icons as an as a means of sorting threads has become quite
popular on many sites, but after the first 30 or so things start to
look quite cluttered. This hack changes the drop down menu system
from using radio input buttons (the <input> tag) to using a drop down
select system (the <select> and <options> tag)

This was tested under RC4. As far as I know it's behaving itself.

Edit: The attatchment here is for the Release Candidate versions. It won't work with VB Gold. However, there is a version that works with gold further down in this thread.

A similar hack was released last week but it puts the icons into the dropdown list too.

Cool beans. Well, for bandwidth reasons I personally don't want to display the icons in the drop down - and I'm sure a couple of other folks may feel the same.

I'm still proud of myself - I did a hack all by myself

Excellent job! And, yes, you did good for your first hack. Keep up the great work! ;)

Seems it's nothing new...

good :)

Question - several of my board members would like to be able to preview all available post icons. How would I go about building such a preview page (I'm pretty sure it would be similar to show all smilies)

Michael Morris 03-26-2004 08:15 AM

Nevermind, figured it out. Not that hard really.

Installing to vbgold is acutally a bit easier. Here are the updated instructions for vb 3.0.0 gold

Jolten 04-09-2004 09:21 PM

Michael,

Thank you!!!! The other hacks never worked correctly for vb3 Gold. This one works perfectly. I and my bandwidth thank youa lot.

Installed, running and happy.

Jolten 04-17-2004 04:57 AM

This is great micheal. I seem to be having a slight problem after updating to vb3.0.1. Everythign works except when post icons are edited and changed. The updated icon is not reflected in the thread view.

any assistance would be great.

Thanks.

just installed this one. working great. i'm on 3.0.1

perhaps an option to be able to select an icon from the display-all page. that would be awesome.

thanks for a kewl hack!

My own board is still on RC4, so I'd have no clue as to what the problem might be in 3.0.1. Sorry.

Can we get a preview of how it looks with the icons showing???
and does this work with usergroups? on some sites I work with some have post icons working with the level of the user.

Thanks.

Michael Morris 02-27-2005 08:54 PM

Wow. I'd forgotten about this one - almost.

I never got this to work with javascript image previews. I've also since removed post icons entirely in favor of the thread category / prefix hack.

Really need advice on this loading issue (forum icons) so what was your best idea to fix this.

what exactly did you do?
