gramik or something similar has a paid solution to the wap problem in development to the best of my knowledge.
although some phones will be able to browse the boards as is just to them being xhtml compliant. |
The archive is WAP compatible - i've seen it used on two very large forums for that purpose :)

I did a pda version myself.... redoing my site currently, but you can have a look at the pda version here:
http://www.mobileread.com/mobile username: test pass: test Unfortunately, I did quite a lot of hacks beside the normal template changes, and it would be quite a pain to document everything. Perhaps, if demand is high enough... |
hey that's not bad, you should definately think about releasing it :)

Great is that working ?? like if i want to try the same thing on my mobile how to or just openening the above website and logging into the system using user/pass as test/test ??? let me know.. if to eager to test it out :) |
yep just open up your phones browswer to the above address and away you go.

Glad you like it.
I could think of two ways of how to make a vB PDA version: 1. create a complete new "lite" style, and have users point to the style via forums/index?styleid={id of lite style}, or 2. create a new subdir, /mobile/, copy modified files from /forums/, and add modified templates, such as mobile_FORUMHOME, to the original forum style. Method 1 is easier, but method 2 is more flexible allowing me to modify vB files where appropriate. For instance, I could ensure that the PDA version is only accessible to registered users (or users of a certain usergroup), whereas the normal forum is accessible to everyone. Or, when displaying links in the PDA version, I could ensure that link names are trimmed (<35 chars), to avoid unnecessary horizontal scrolls on small screens. And also, I like to avoid the ?styleid={} parameter because it modifies a user's cookie, and this can drive him crazy by changing his default style. |
The easiest method is to find out the common hostnames of WAP-enabled phones and then simply change the style in phpinclude if it's a WAP browser :)
|
well that is if you think of WAP only... but my focus was more on pda-enabled browsers such as netfront, ...
|
yeah i know my users would feel more special being able to go to http://wap.ebslive.com and giving it it's own set of files would just be nice from a sabret00the point of view :o

There's this option too: http://www.wiforums.net/

I'm going to try out that vb.com link. I went to my forums on my phone and technically it works but it takes forever to load and it's super squished. This way will be better.
(For those who can't go even a few hours without browsing their forums lol!) |
Well the link shows you how to make a skin, but really it would need to be a seperate folder like AlexanderT stated, in order for people to not have to worry about changing styles each time they access it through a PDA or WAP.
AlexanderT are you planning on releasing how you did it? I mean a bit more specific. I went to your site on my phone and it looks very nice and clean. Can you be a bit more specific on what exactly you did to achieve this? |
I replied to your PM first. If that is not enough information, feel free to ask me here. If it is still requested, I might try to put a package together and release it as a "hack". I am just very busy atm.

make it a style, then go to that style and select the link from your address bar, should be something like
www.youforum.com/index.php?styleid=1 select that link and copy and paste it into your control panel to setup a subdomain. http://mobile.swspeed.com - example, it carrys the mobile stile on the mobile device and when they log on to their PC it keeps the regular style. |
