-   -   [RELEASE] - Nicer Control Panel for 1.1.5 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=6260)

01-02-2001 09:04 PM

I remembered a few posts a little while back where people were complaining about the (relatively) plain look of the vB control panel, especially when compared to the UBB control panel.

I've always had a slightly altered control panel for my vB, so as I was applying my modifications to the 1.1.5 version today, I thought I'd share it with everyone else.

The functionality is identical, although some hyperlinked controls have been replaced with forms (in particular, long lists such as the list of templates have been replaced with multiline <select> elements)... In use, this version produces html pages of about the same size as the original version, sometimes smaller, and is very quick and intuitive to use.

Anyway, here's a few little screenshots, and a link for you to download the modifications if you like them.

To use this, simply upload the files in the zip archive into your forums/admin folder, overwriting the existing files. You will want to backup your original files first... just in case.

If Jelsoft want to include this modified version with future pre-2.0 releases, just go ahead and include it.

Cheers all. Enjoy :)

Wow, the gifs look nice!

01-02-2001 09:08 PM

Isn't there something in the license agreement about distributing vB...

Quote:

Registered users may modify the vBulletin code for their personal use (at their own risk), but any altered code must not be redistributed or resold in any form.
The screens do look nice though :)
Maybe 1.1.6 ;)

I'll remove the link for now and email the zip to someone at Jelsoft, who can decide its fate.

Then wouldn't all hacks be disturbing the coding and being redistributed?

01-02-2001 10:27 PM

I think the problem is complete .php files of vBulletin are being put up for download, albeit modified to look different.

01-02-2001 10:32 PM

Exactly. Hacks are generally instructions on how to modify your code, like 'find this: jaigbe. after it add: gerighkiu'.

thats really nice m8!
i'd really love to get my hands on that neat little hack!

01-03-2001 02:42 AM

ME WANT!

01-03-2001 05:07 AM

I wish they would create a special hacks download section for members only. Would make life so much simpler ;)

01-03-2001 09:17 AM

Good job!
Looks like professional control panel. ;)

01-03-2001 01:19 PM

nice :)

dam i have been away too long and didn't even know 1.1.5 was released

01-03-2001 03:39 PM

I'm just waiting for a response from James or John... maybe it could be posted in the members' area?

Everyone: Please stop emailing me to get a copy of this, I won't send it out until I get a https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/ from one of the developers.

As has been said before here, this isn't really a hack, all I have done is rewritten the PHP code that outputs the HTML pages for the control panel.

01-03-2001 03:57 PM

yhea but you did such a nice job that it should be called an hack.

The link was removed because it violates the license agreement of vBulletin. If you read the entire thread you would have realized this and know that the auther is working with Jelsoft to release it.

However if you have seen the screen shots of version 2.0's control panel then you would know that the whole thing has been redone as it is. I feel very strongly that version 2 will be released by February 1.

01-13-2001 11:19 PM

anything to do with the "some form or other" ubb 6 release guaranteed by the end of the month?

01-14-2001 04:31 PM

I don't know. I don't have anything to do with UBB since we upgraded to vBulletin.

Since I don't use their software, I could not really careless about it. I don't feel threatened by their release and I don't think Jelsoft should either. With Infopop restricting a user to PERL and flat files, I feel they are restricting their own companies growth and will either move into a modern infrastructure or ultimately drop UBB altogether.

My feelings are from the advancements of the demo board here and the fact that queries and database activity is being optimized which has time and time again been stated as being the last task before install and upgrade scripts were written. From the time I first logged into the demo (when it was unusable and chaotic) to now (very impressive product), I have seen version 2.0 mature and improve over time. Considering this is a re-write and not a simple upgrade, I applaud Jelsoft on the work they have done to the system. The speed increases provided by GZip and database enhancements alone provide enough incentive for me to leave InfoPop alone to play with their own toys.

01-15-2001 04:27 AM

yeah version 2 will be released in feb 1st!!! it's gonna rock the bb world!! :) can't wait

01-15-2001 03:45 PM

Is that confirmed?

oh ok

01-18-2001 07:16 AM

Can we get an answer on this? This looks great and I personally would like to use it. Or is it possible for the designer to rewrite this as a hack and a seperate zip with the images?? Please?

I'm afraid that it's just not possible to rewrite this as a hack, as pretty much every PHP page in the control panel has had fairly major rewrites of the code that displays the HTML.

So without a go-ahead from Jelsoft, I think this one's going to be a dead duck for all of you. :(

01-18-2001 07:28 AM

Damn. Come on, we have to get some response....

01-26-2001 03:23 AM

Jellsoooofffttt??

01-26-2001 08:33 AM

I cry too.

I little answer cant cost so much time?

01-26-2001 09:20 AM

Hello,

Since we have redesigned the members area radically anyway for version 2.0, I'm afraid that it's not going to be possible to distribute this design with the software.

Sorry about that - I'm sure that you'll all be happy with the new design and layout of the control panel for version 2.0 though :)

All the best,

James

01-26-2001 09:32 AM

I cant understand this. Many user will be using the version 1.1.x very long time, because the changes in 2.0 are very hard and she loose her changings and hacks.

Why we cant use this nice control script? It is ready, your team must do nothing.

In the last time i feel, that all answer from the support are: the version 2.0 would be good. What is with 1.1.5 user. She had paid her money too.

01-26-2001 12:00 PM

James this really does re-beg the question of having a password protected area where members can upload files, this would solve the whole problem.

are you working on this? it seems pretty important really (wwwthreads.com has one for example).

01-26-2001 02:39 PM

Oh c'mon. Think about it.

Do you REALLY think that there'd be any point to testing a new version for a while, then releasing it with vB 2.0 on the horizon?

01-26-2001 02:55 PM

they don't want you to test it, they person making the changes just wants to be able to give them to other people who are registered members. He could easily, just put it on his website, but dosen't want people to be able to copy it, so he needs a place that is password protected so that only registered users can download it and use it if they wish. Most probably won't cos they are waiting until 2.0 but not everyone is going to upgrade (if i can't sort this access/cookie thing out i know i won't) and a nicer control panel taking 5 seconds to update would be nice.

as you would say c'mon think about it :)

01-26-2001 03:10 PM

Actually, when I said that I didn't even realize there was a third page here. :)

01-26-2001 04:20 PM

arr.. ok :)

ed, can we get you on side to push for this member's area thing??? :)

01-26-2001 04:28 PM

Chris,

Ok - I'm convinced :) I'll see what I can do.

All the best,

James

You mean the thing so we can put things like this thing in the thing? ;)

I'm not 100% sure about this one -- might kill the hacking community because we'd all get lazy -- put there's probably something else coming up. :)

01-26-2001 07:33 PM

which ever ed, have something like that at vbulletin.org or whatever just so long these sort of files can be transmitted.

cheers james.
