How come ?

See the attached image for 'how come' T_T
actually my question is: how can the file favicon.ico be displayed in there ( where I arrowed red ) when I visit 2 site: vb.com and ffrepublic.com but the problem is it doesn't appear in vbt.com and vb.org and either my site does >_<. Is there a way to have favicon.ico displayed in beside the link of vb site ? I use MyIE browser, it doesn't appear in IE nomatter what (is there another way too ? ^^). Sorry but is this a vb question ? I don't know where to put it so I laid it here. |
Good question - and tbh I don't know why. I think that you have to use something like <link type="favicon" href="favicon.ico" /> or something in the <head> tags these days. But i'm probably completely wrong :)
|
<a href="http://www.favicon.com/" target="_blank">http://www.favicon.com/</a>
Maybe it says on there? |
Microsoft also guides that: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ortcutIcon.asp
use this: <HEAD> <LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.mydomain.com/myicon.ico"> <TITLE>My Title</TITLE> </HEAD> But I cannot get it work, favicon.com said that I should ask my host manager to enable *.ico files but does that matter when I can view it via its own url ? and when I view the source of the page has favicon in the address bar, I see nothing like <LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.mydomain.com/myicon.ico"> how come ? I have often thought about this issue ... i will investiget further

back again to this topic
vb.org now has the favicon display in front of its every links. Does anyone know why ? I also want to have a favicon displayed. |
well, it wasn't there because that file was actually missing on the server ;)
i've uploaded it yesterday again, so that's the reason why it's there now ;) |
got it to work on the forums, not the main site:ermm: Put the above code in head include template.
what freeware program creates .ico files? |
ah Xenon, do you know how to make it work ?
I've got that file but can do nothing >_< |
Hmm, i never changed anything, so i think it's a standart in vb.
maybe just a little option in the ACP settings ;) @apoc: hmm, i think paint from windows can handle them. |

which options, Xenon ? |
no settings need to be changed apparently. IE will only show the .ico file when the page has been bookmarked. Netscape, firefox, etc seem to show them all the time if the above code has been inserted above the <head>. After asking a few questions and searching google, thats what I came up with. I found a few threads on www.webmasterworld.com
|
yes, thank you, IT WORKS ^^
with this in <head>: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon"> But I still don't understand why vb.org doesn't have that link but still have the favicon display >_< does paint can really make a favicon ? have someone tried ? and, how to make it work with IE ? |

IE needs to have a different size. 16*16, some odd color number 16 bit or something. I just opened it, pasted my pic and clicked save or ctrl s, I cant remember which.
|
no, I've tried using paint, but it doesn't work, in ur link from webmasterworld.com they recommended some prog but I didn't try yet.
IE only displays the favicon in the favourites after you add, I think that why it is call favourite icon ^ ^ |
I have another question for this.
Visit http://www.cosforums.com/index.php? look at the favicon of that site carefully, you will se that it's animating ! well I really want to know how to make it like that. |
There are programs that allow you to create animated .ico files. Unfortunately, that's all I know. I can't direct you to a specific one, sorry.
