Anyone sticking with VB2 ?

Anybody going to stay with VB2?

I might, but VB3 is so powerful... I just hate its template/style system to death.

Link14716 01-16-2004 12:56 AM

I will never install a vB2 board again. I can't live without vB3, especially it's style inheritance system... it is a huge improvement.

MaDCaT75 01-16-2004 01:13 AM

maybe if I had a forum..... but it got deleted

Link14716 01-16-2004 01:17 AM

My license has been idle for quite a while as well. Maybe I should open up my localhost test board to the public and have some fun. :D

Xenon 01-16-2004 01:22 AM

nope, i won't go back to vb2.

vb3's code has so much improved, much better to work with

sabret00the 01-16-2004 01:26 AM

yup love vB3 can't wait to upgrade my live forums once i finish work on my localhost.

g-force2k2 01-16-2004 02:41 AM

vb3 is the way to go.

You say vb2 whats that?

Nah just kidding, i'll still work with vb2 hacking especially custom work, other then that it's all vb3.

Cheers,
g-force2k2

MaDCaT75 01-16-2004 02:58 AM

man... I dont wanna waste more money on hosting after I just spent $90 on it two months ago

Erwin 01-16-2004 03:16 AM

vB3's code is much more optimized, so there's no reason to stick with vB2 except for the hacks, and this should not be a problem as more hacks are released and updated.

MGM 01-16-2004 02:47 PM

I'm still on a vB2, when vB3 Gold releases and I test it all out on my localhost board, maybe then I'll convert ;)

MGM out

imo if your havent been playing with vB3 since its realease your going to have alot to lern its taken me from beta 3 to beta 7 to learns the ins and outs of the board plus access all the relly cool features and toy around with the code :)

subduck 01-16-2004 03:05 PM

Once you start using vb3 it becomes harder and harder to move back to vb2!

cleck673 01-16-2004 03:08 PM

I will stick with vb2.3 for my big sites, but I will convert my small sites eventually. I acually installed vb3 on a new forum that is designed to get the political and other debates out of my other forums and I must say, IT IS NICE.. http://www.thewaterfountain.com/forums

MindTrix 01-16-2004 03:16 PM

Im using vB3 now as i just started a new forum. Its alot different to vB2 in all aspects and some can seem daunting especially to people who dont know PHP or understand the new template scheme etc.

But i realised the only way to learn is to install one and get used to it so thats why im using it for my new forum, Only problem is having to now do all of the php edits again when i upgrade (IF i upgrade)

I'm still going to install a vB2 as a test board for support purposes :p

Dean C 01-16-2004 03:45 PM

*raises hand*

For about another 6 months at least :)

Oblivion Knight 01-16-2004 04:45 PM

I'll be sticking with vB2 until at the very least vB3 goes final..
Even then, I'd rather wait until the Arcade and Journal mods are ported to vB3.

I haven't really liked the new admin panel or the styles used for vB3 since it was released.. When I do upgrade, I'll be making it look much like a vB2 in layout.

I won't be upgrading until 3.0.2 at a bare minimum for security reasons. My board is running and looking good at the moment with no load problems, so there's no incentive for me.

actually itd be to your benefit to switch now, the large the site gets the harder it will be to upgrade and Jelsoft will eventually discontinue the vB2 serries along with support id imagine :)

It's true. My board grew by 10,000 members since I upgraded from 2.3.2 to Beta 3 about 6 months or so ago. :) By the time vB3 turns Gold, who knows.

and trying to Convert it now would be worse >.< i did a semi large board upgrade it took me an hour to reindex and update everything i couldnt imagin doing a LARGE board

Okiewan 01-16-2004 06:53 PM

Too many nightmare stories about upgrading large boards for me. 34,000 members and 700,000+ posts on my board.

filburt1 01-16-2004 06:56 PM

I walked a client through a small upgrade today. Rebuilding the search engine alone took hours. And that was the first of five. The last one is several hundred thousand members.

Lady Ginasue 01-16-2004 06:58 PM

For right now I plan on staying with vB 2. I guess you might say I'm a chicken. I'm afraid to change over without someone to be right beside me helping me along the way.

I'm not a great one for knowing what I'm doing. I've learned a lot yes on making my board look the way it does, but I have to follow step by step the hacks and changes.

Shoot, I'm still afraid to upgrade even to 2.3.3 and now 2.3.4 is out. I don't want to mess up what I have.

This is my board, and if you look when I set up the board, I still have upload in my url.

you SHOULD at least update calendar.php :) regradless of anything

but the longer you wait to upgrade the worse it will be

MGM 01-16-2004 10:18 PM

I think the best way to upgrade is to make a backup and use the backup on a local server and try it out that way first..... if everything runs smoothly and u dont find anything missing, then the upgrade should do fine on your live board

MGM out

Brad 01-17-2004 12:42 AM

Never again will I use vB 2, vB 3 is just that much more powerful.

[high]* Xenon agrees
[/high]

we did it that way on vb.org :)

MGM 01-17-2004 07:08 PM

yup, I'm doing the same with my board once Gold comes out..... but until then I've been testing like hell using RC1 and 2

MGM out

MindTrix 01-17-2004 07:56 PM

I dont see why everyones so scared of upgrading :p Then again, i dont even want to upgrade RC2 too RC3 when that comes out but thats because im to lazy to do all my hacks php edits again

noppid 01-17-2004 08:00 PM

Let me see if I have this correct...The longer I wait, the harder it may be to upgrade?

So a process that is purposly for the sake of improving the product, will make it worse later?

You guys need to listen to yourselves sometime. The whole point is to improve where problems are found. I expect those problems to be gone by the time this product goes gold. Not hindering me during the upgrade process.

reindexing and rebuilding some info will be unavoidable and the larger the community grows the longer it will take to reindex and rebuild :)

MindTrix 01-17-2004 08:05 PM

A product is always improved, they are still releasing vB2's now :)

So it does not matter when you install a board, or upgrade, if you want it completely up2date or as secure as they get at the moment, you will have 2 upgrade.

You do not have to upgrade to vB3 now if you do not want too. But remember vB2 wont be around forever once they focus on vB3.

I hate the thread read/unread marking system to death. It needs to be backended. Besides that and a few minor features that make staff's life easier, I don't see what is not to like about vB3? ^_^

In my opinion, I would hedge my bets that vB3 is more secure than vB2.

Okiewan 01-18-2004 05:04 AM

Well, this thread got me interested, so I made a backup of the current vb2, went thru all the upgrades (I was still running 2.2.1 (don't shoot me), pretty painless actually and my board is hacked to death. All told, including indexing, updating counters, etc, it took about 9 hours (34K members, 700K posts). There are some "gotta have" hacks I'm wating on before I can switch over.

Maybe so, but you can also agree that an initial release of any piece of software is the most unstable.
