Download Hack
 

There use to be a hack for vB2.x.x but now no longer exists and does not work in vB3. It use to allow you to place files on your website and only allow specific user groups to download the file, and if they were not registered it would take them to the registration page.

I'm wondering if someone could redo the hack, or the origional author place remake a vB3 compliant version.

Mainly that's doable without a hack at all.

Create a new forum, display order = 0
Set up permissions, so unregistred cannot dl attachments, just allow those special ug's to dl attachments.

then all you have to do is to post a new thread and attach the dl's and give out the links :)

Thats's what I was trying to do, but doesn't php have a 2 MB upload restriction? I tried uploading movies that are 30 MB in file size or higher, but they failed with the error listed above.

If there is a way around this, please let me know.

you can change the limit within php.ini iirc, but for those big files it's better to ftp upload :)

but if the file is on the server and not in the db, it's harde to save them by the vb account, as once someone got the link, everyone who knows it can access it.


i think there is a way around it, but i don't have the time to write it right now, but as it's a request i leave the field for someone else now :)

Meta info for the file is very needed thing, as well
as the preview and it's no good layout for a download zone, so it's a hack, a big one ;)

That's exactly the hack I'm needing also, i know a few other people aswell that are needing/wanting this... I'm sure whoever makes this will get a huge amount of installs. Hopefully someone will make this soon. Lol I Might even give someone a free month of webhosting if they make this for vb3.

Have you tried contacting the original hack's author about updating it?

no, but thats something i should do. I just dont wanna annoy him by trying to contact him, i thought i saw something about him saying in a threat that all requests/help would be ignored

true, right now me and a friend of mine are examing the coding of the hack he made for vb2 and trying to come up with an updated version for vb3

In case you, or anyone else, may be thinking of this I'd suggest reading Title 17 of US Code. Pay particular attention to Sections 101, 103 in Chapter 1, and Section 1204 in Chapter 12.

By the way... besides the member only files hack, is there a way to make certain pages only accessable my logged in members?

The hack you're searching is called SecureDownloads which made exactly what you're talking about.
I asked the author of the hack and he is already working to port it to vb3 ;-)
