Limpkinw 12-04-2003 03:19 PM

Cheater :)

Tigga 12-04-2003 03:29 PM

Hey Steve... What was your password again? ;)

noppid 12-04-2003 03:34 PM

From the notice I don't recall them saying we're closing to put up new software, we're closing to switch servers is what I recall... It seems to me there will have to be another beta with a mojor style change. But who really cares? I don't test beta software anyway. vB 2.x.x works great. :)

Well of course they'd have to close it to upload the new graphics and implement the new style w/o causing mass pandemonium.

If they were just moving servers I would think the entire site would be down and not just the forum. Plus Steve probably would have said something. ;)

Exactly. I do the same thing (shut down the HTTTP server to the public) when I am making upgrades to my forum as well.

BlueFlame 12-04-2003 04:54 PM

Just wait and see guys :)

drumsy 12-04-2003 04:58 PM

Yay...

:hoping for the best:

So short sited...

When you move servers you leave the old site up, but closed, while the DNS resolves...The old site is closed so no one can access it, and the new site is open so when DNS resolves for you, you get the new site...No one ever gets a 404 or a server not found. It's called good planning.

Any upgrade and/or release is welcome, great if you get it. I'm just repeating the reason for closing as I recall it and it said to move, not release a gamma.

Tungsten 12-04-2003 05:03 PM

Oooo... I'm back into VB.com sorta. Looks weird.

Limpkinw 12-04-2003 05:07 PM

Upcoming events for the next 10 dayshttps://vborg.vbsupport.ru/vBulletin Server Moving: 12-05-2003, 12-06-2003

KingsFan 12-04-2003 05:17 PM

I just got a bunch of "connection refussed" errors and now I'm locked out again. I guess they're still upgrading?

Nah... that's not what is happening here. Besides, the server is actually located in the USA and it's not 12/5/03 here yet. ;)

Screen shot (below) shows what I was seeing before the took the HTTP daemon back out of public service.

Actually there's a couple of misconceptions.

First, what is happening today has nothing to do with the server move. That is scheduled for tomorrow.

Second, the server move is a physical relocation of the server itself - not a transfer of data from one server to another. The hosting company is moving their servers to a new facility. Consequently there is no 'old site' to provide DNS from.

Feran 12-04-2003 05:19 PM

And also note that only the forums are closed for "upgrade", meaning its local to the forums, not a server upgrade, and that we are going to see Gamma *drool*

I can't believe it actually came ^_^ V

EDIT- Damn you Steve >.>

Yes, I am well aware of how to move servers (God knows I've done it enough times). As I said, if they were moving servers, then the entire site would be down (or they would have a "moving servers" type message, which is pretty much the same thing). It doesn't seem likely at all that they would have only disabled/password protected the forums if they were moving servers instead of upgrading to vB Gamma. It's not short sited, it's called logic.

MindTrix 12-04-2003 05:20 PM

Yeah i posted in the site feedback here about the server moving and blah. Maybe its a disguise!!! Also if they were moving servers, dont forget that vb.org is on the same server, so shouldnt we all not be here at the moment lol

They've set .htaccess password on the forums, which is too conspicuous for just a server move. They don't want to let known the new style, even if all that will be seen is the "This forum is currently under construction" vBulletin error message. ;)

when I move servers, I point the new dns to the old ip... and set the times low (760 vs. 84600)..... close forum on new server, change domain nameserver settings, once propagated, close the forums on old server, change dns to new ip, dump database, restore database, and wait a few minutes....

Nothing lost... downtime measured in minutes. A very few people continue to see the 'closed' message on old server because their isp's are cacheing too long, but most switch over according to ttl. After a few days, I raise the ttl to a 'normal' setting.

Been down over 2 hours now and that's on a clean board with no hacks or template mods installed. How long is it going to take the rest of us to upgrade?

Apostle 12-04-2003 05:30 PM

Hehe, all is in accordance with the prophecy!

Yeah, how's that work? It's all voodoo I guess.

MindTrix 12-04-2003 05:34 PM

Might want to watch the language Feran :p lol

Just a note because otherwise the admins will be after you :)

It doesn't take long to upgrade usually. But vB.com are doing alot more than upgrading.

SpeedStreet 12-04-2003 05:35 PM

Look at the screenshot, the images are white.

It's gonna look like the adminCP

Feran 12-04-2003 05:36 PM

On another note, you think vb.org will upgrade soon too? We don't get any special benefits? >.>

YEARS!

Feran 12-04-2003 05:37 PM

Ahaha, what if they only put up the upgrade thingy to stall and get our hopes up, and then vB.com isn't up for like two days XDXD
