Best portal?
Hi everybody :)
A site that i'm helping is wanting to make a homepage with VB integration. The problem is, is they don't want the whole cubes look (they wanna use a hand made layout w/o any of that). What would be the best portal to fit my needs? I wanna be able to almost just do includes on some php files to get the info. We need a search, Member login, forum stats & a poll if possible :) Anyone know? :) Thanks! ~Francisco |

Includes news, polls, member logins etc. |
Hmm, very cool, but are they FULLY customizable? I'm not wanting the whole block look.
Thanks guys :) |
Both are template based to allow you to change the look to meet your sites needs :)

<a href="http://vbportal.com" target="_blank">http://vbportal.com</a> is probley the best written one tho you do have to pay for it and can be really bad for queries, depending on how many blocks you have active.

No, vbHome & vBindex are alot better than vbportal.

I said written. vBPortal first has a sweet admin panel. Next has alot of nice features built in. Blocks can be added and removed very easiley with no template editing.
Free verson for vBPortal sucks but paid owns all execpt it's queries with alot of featurs turned on. |
vBportal has always been a bit heavy, and its real hard on a database. I think you should go with vBhome or vBindex. Both are made with server load in mind, and by respected hack authors (Not saying the author of vBportal is bad or anything :) )

Thanks for the input everyone :)
I'll try them all out and see which one mod's best for us. ~Francisco |

Can only agree ;) |
It all depends on what you need, if only need a few the fetures then go with one vbhome or vbindex.
If you want alot of options go with vbportal. |

I did try them all a month ago. My requirements were similar to yours. I had a custom style that I wanted to use, and I did not want the boxy look.
vBindex won my test. The reason is that it is incredibly easy to twist into what you want it to do. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, you can create something that has no boxes at all and is totally driven from vB data. Take a look at my site from the link below. Click on one of the pdaPhones on the left, or from the drop down menu to get to Articles or the FAQ pages. Then drill down into an article or FAQ. Everything you see is coming from vBulletin data or a few custom tables I created. All of it is running through the vBindex.php base file or different versions of it that I've created. Of course, you'll have to do a little php, sql, and vbulletin template mods to get this effect. But, vBindex gives you the foundation. Losing the box effect is mostly a function of how you handle the styles and html in your templates. You can do this with any of them if you want. My main observation about vBindex is that it is layout to make that pretty easy to do. |
