Where were you during the Blackout of 8-14-2003?

I'm safe in Florida. How about you?

assassingod 08-14-2003 08:32 PM

Nevermind, I justed turned on BBC news 24 and CNN and watched what is all about

Dan 08-14-2003 08:40 PM

noopid same as me

/me sits comfortably in his air conditioned house with TV on CNN and computer on

Blindchild02 08-14-2003 08:43 PM

/me sits in VA

lol something happened with the powerplant in Canada, and theyre all connected thru Ny and ++++, so it went out for some reason *shrug*

N9ne 08-14-2003 08:44 PM

I'm in England so I'd say I'm pretty safe from it huh?

assassingod 08-14-2003 08:44 PM

In my opinion, I think this has something to do with this RPC error/virus that has been going around. I said this a few minutes ago to my dad, a few seconds later the reported on CNN said that it is a possibilty that it is due to a virus

This is absolutely a disgrace. Although initial reports say that there is no sign of terrorism I have a gut feeling that this is some very-well orchestrated undercover terrorist action.

I mean you'd think a city with the business-infrostructure of somewhere like NYC would have an almost flawless backup system to prevent this from happening.

Think of all the people in the subway in pitch black locked in their trains. This is terrible. People who commute into the city using public transport are having to walk home. This is causing chaos on the roads so people who do have cars are going to be there all night in the traffic.

Then of course there's the long-term effects like insurance claims on defrosted freezers. Aquariams with water coolers will eventually heat up if it lasts overnight and expensive fish will die. People will lose so much money in business.

This is going to cause absolute chaos... :(

assassingod 08-14-2003 09:08 PM

Thank you very much:)

I disagree, looking at the video feed, everything looks in preportion and very calm, and I just heard that power is starting to come back on (in Canada and parts of NY)

Also, I disagree that its a terriost attack, I say its a cracker attack (or the most obvious reason that it was due to natural causes:p)

ap0c 08-14-2003 09:56 PM

the power is now starting to come back on in upstate Ohio now

Zachery 08-14-2003 10:15 PM

Kinda makes ya glad the phone system is battery operated!

bharvey42 08-14-2003 10:50 PM

I'm sitting in michigan and I have had power all day muhahahah.. And no i seriously doubt it was a terrorist attack. Why is it that the second anything bad happens the finger is being prepped to point at terrorism.

noppid 08-14-2003 10:51 PM

Poor terrorists, they get blamed for everything these days.

Link14716 08-14-2003 10:55 PM

The Canadian Prime Minister is the only one giving out information, according to him, there was a lightning strike on a New York power plant and that "cascading effect" took out the power everywhere else.

I'm sitting down here in Georgia, watching the news. :)

filburt1 08-14-2003 11:00 PM

You know I mean no offense when I say this, but thinking that it's terrorism with absolutely no way to back yourself up is downright stupid. New York and the region has had power outages before, including ones this severe. It wasn't bin Laden then and it wasn't bin Laden this time.

Anyway, while it's unfortunate they all had to go outside in the uber heat, I did miss my Simpsons on the local FOX affiliate...thank god another channel had it on at the same time :p

Attrox 08-15-2003 12:42 AM

Luckily I'm a bit west of the power grid that has the outages, and safe here in St.Paul. :) But what I'm worried about is what will happen if this lasts into the night. There will be a ton of riots and looting, it will be horrible. Hopefully they get things up and working before then, but by the looks of it, they won't.

Velocd 08-15-2003 06:05 AM

I live near San Francisco, and heard about this power outage today on the news. Thinking it was a terrorist attack isn't completely illogical, but is quite a paranoiac jump to conclusions. Some lightening recently caused a pretty significant brush-fire (hundreds of acres) in my region.. Or, was it a terrorist attack!?

Just kidding of course.

Tony G 08-15-2003 11:29 AM

Far away, and also jumped to conclusions about it being a terrorist attack. I sooned learned my lesson..

Chris M 08-15-2003 05:33 PM

In England, safe from it:)

Satan

Maybe the terrorists caused the lightning!

lol, that's great. :p

?9: SIT IN THE SHADE. Many Iraqis go outside when the power?s off. ?We sit in the shade,? said George Ruweid, 27, playing cards with friends on the sidewalk. Of the U.S. blackout, he said: ?I hope it lasts for 20 years. Let them feel our suffering.?
You don't say?

And this is one Americans have no trouble utilizing:

Quote:

?2: USE FOUL LANGUAGE. ?When the power goes out, I curse everybody,? said Emad Helawi, a 63-year-old accountant. ?I curse God. I curse Saddam Hussein. And I curse the Americans.?
Those Iraq?s have some genuine advice! ;)

From what I heard in the news it was a fire in one power station that led to a domino effect that affected other power stations.

One thing though - although this was not a terrorist attack, it surely must have given them some ideas on how to cripple North America.

Most definitely it did and I can bet that terrorists will be involved in something like this in the future.

noppid 08-15-2003 11:46 PM

It's actually very scary. Their forcasted ideas were to attack nuke plants. Now that they know they can destabilize a region by hurting a conventional power plant, who knows what they may think of to cause caous.

Zachery 08-16-2003 01:32 AM

i honestly doubt it was anything related to terriost. why?

for years our powergrid has sucked and there has been talk about trying to fix it, what happened happened because of a huge surge of power ran over ++++ty wires and eccentialy fried :\

DrkFusion 08-16-2003 03:51 PM

What happend still has not been 100% confirmed. They have assigned a task force to get to the bottom of what happend. What everyone is saying has not been confirmed, so we really do not know.

SmEdD 08-16-2003 06:50 PM

I'm in the Ontario part of it. But we live in the second grid area from the Buce Nuclear Power so we had power about 6 hours after it went down.

Also the damn poswer was going off and one for periods of about 3 hours. Sucked sooooo bad.

There not sure but they know it came from the US Niagra Power Grid.

Also there was no fire. They have no clue what happen. All the safty's went on like 20 diffrn't Power Plants.

And MSNBC News Articals are probley the best layed out on the whole story.

And 3 people died :( 2 in Ontario and one in New York. I think they also said over 60 fires due to candles.

S.Shady 08-16-2003 09:38 PM

i was wit my fellow workers when we closed the wendys because obvious the power wasnt comming on :) so we went to a fellow workers house for a party :) daily thing not because of blackout :) but anyway we went to liz house for the party.
i needed to get home and change out of my work clothes so i barrowed her car and went home who thought that it was a piece of crap i got home and on the way back it died. so i walked allthe way to her house a good hour :) finally get there tell her it broke down. i go in the little party we have. so were sitting there ppl leave in and out eventually its 2 am.
we go to use the payphone so my manager could call his girlfriend. after hes done we get picked up by the cops because of a cleveland curfue. they decided to let us go since we were a street away from the party. everyone was gone by the time we got back so we decided to spend the night at the assistant manager since his girlfriend was out of town so me him and his lifelong friend guel we go in the party and buy stuff out there refridgerator because his house didnt have any food. so we bought some ramon noodles 10 pack of minutemais applejuice boxes and some doughnuts then we went to his house and had a little bday party for me we had cake (doughnuts), boiled water chilled to ice water, juice ,noodles, 1 candle and some smoke.
slept on the couch and woke up to no electricity :) it came on later then we went home.

but when i got home my mom said she had plased a missing persons report with the police :-\ seing as all the phone are wireless i could not call home and my cell phone was not working. so i kinda was stuck and she keeps talking about when i go out she asks when you gonna be home tomarrow ?
