Yahoo as Referer(works with vb3)

This is my first hack I have made for vBulletin. It may be a simple one to some people, but atleast its a hack! :p

Hack name: Yahoo as Referer

version: 0.1

Author: Hostc

vBulletin versions: All

What this hack does: This hack will simpily add http://www.yahoo.com/* before any parsed URLs.

Example: if I posted a link to http://vbulletin.org this hack would make it http://www.yahoo.com/*<a href="http:...letin.org/</a> thus making yahoo as the referer to any logs :)

If you use this please click install :)

Hi!!: cool
thnx

but... what is this 4?

msimplay 08-09-2003 07:09 AM

whats the point of this then ?

Hostc 08-09-2003 07:48 AM

Well, you can use it so people can't link back to your site. (Since they will only see that you came from http://www.yahoo.com/

Kriek 08-09-2003 01:32 PM

Absolutely pointless :tired:

ooooooh i seee dats excellent :D

so that means they can't link your images or anything thus saving bandwidth ?

Alien 08-09-2003 05:26 PM

This actually has quite a good reason to be created.

On any site that deals with coupons, or "hot deals" you don't have to worry about linking to a coupon or deal and having the company know it came from your site if I understand this correctly? On some boards, people will bypass the linking just so it has to be copied and pasted into the address field manually. Wouldn't have to do that anymore in that case I suppose?

Please respect others work, if you find it pointless then keep it to yourself, because that was rude and uncalled for.

Hostc 08-10-2003 01:25 AM

19 downloads, has anyone had any problems?

Cloud Strife 08-10-2003 11:25 AM

Are you sure this will make yahoo as a referer???
Its a great hack if it does this... Does it work in browzers such as opera etc???

Hostc 08-10-2003 07:39 PM

Yes I'm sure it makes yahoo as the referer. I do not have Opera. But I'm sure it does work with it.

Overgrow 08-12-2003 03:26 PM

However it does use a bit of Yahoo's bandwidth, so not totally innocuous...

Another reason for this is if your site deals with subjects that may or may not be illegal in various places around the world.

alkatraz 08-13-2003 01:05 AM

NICE!

If I was still in the warez forum scene this would have been perfect.

Thx for addition Hostc

Oh well ;) They can suffer from us using their massive bandwidth ;)

Update: I will be adding intructions so you can use this for vb3.

To check and see if it works you use a Log like AWstats or webalizer etc.

I'm not sure if you can do this with google... since http://google.com/*http://www.vbulletin.org/ doesn't work.

lasto 08-22-2003 12:47 PM

so because of this reffer this is no slow down on your board is there.

and every link i use with this hack will think yahoo is the referer

is there a way they can block this in the future ?

also thinking about it will yahoo see you as being referred to by yahoo LOL

ImportPassion 12-27-2003 11:17 PM

i didn't try the hack, but the link definetly does not work, at least in the address bar or as this link
http://www.yahoo.com/*http://www.vbulletin.org/

deamontears 01-05-2004 12:42 AM

yahoo doesnt work anymore but the fallowing does.

http://en.safeurl.de/?http://www.vbulletin.org/

dstruct2k 01-05-2004 12:53 AM

Ooh! I like that SafeURL site! They seem to be designed for exactly what this hack is meant to do! :D

Forgive my ignorance but could you not just edit the [url] and the [url=x] bbcodes to get this effect?
