I'll be getting a second server soon, hopefully a Xeon :).

So which is better for reselling as hosting services?

Ensim, Plesk, Ensim Pro, or cPanel ?

Erwin 07-09-2003 12:13 AM

I have an RS box too - Dual Xeon 2 Gb RAM 2x73Gb HDD - it's great. See you around at the RS forums. :)

Ensim Pro or Cpanel. Cpanel is good for newbie webmasters as it's so simple and automated, but it's a bit buggier. But I like it. The beauty of Cpanel are it's automated scripts, and automatic updates.

For example, you can upgrade Apache, PHP and add Apache or PHP modules using:

/scripts/easyapache

hashesh 07-09-2003 02:35 AM

I would be interested in splitting a rackshack setup. anyone else looking?

Yeh I saw your post in the "Need a forum" topic, and your Disclaimer;)

Me and [name]NTLDR[/name] are Zion there:)

We currently have a plesk panel (the only one available at ordering), but we won't actually use it much - We don't really need it;)

We were looking at one of those, and had [name]assassingod[/name] been able to afford it, we would have gotten between the three of us:)

I just moved over to a Dual Xeon Box.. Same setup as Erwin's.
I was at Nocster for the last 6 months on a dedicated PIV 2.0 with 512mb Ram and 300 gigs bandwidth. I wasn't real happy with the latency/lag issues that started happening about 3 months into using them. At first they were great but the network errors and lag never seemed to die. At the same time my forums were growing like a weed and it all added up to be an aggrevating situation. Before that I had another dedicated at RS for about a year. I moved to Nocster from RS because I really wanted to have cPanel again. After they started offering it with the Dual Xeon SCSI box's, I couldn't pass it up. There is nothing I hate more than lag in my forums.
With this new dedicated Xeon, they FLY.. I can have over 240 people on at one time on one community, 60 on another and it doesn't so much as flinch! Loads never exceed .5 during this..
Puts a big smile on my face, though more of a dent in my wallet than I like.
I've got plenty of room if anyone needs really fast community hosting. I just have the box for my forums and a few friends sites, and might help out a few others if needed.

Smoothie 07-10-2003 06:00 AM

I've been with RS for a year now, its been great. Just ordered a 512MB upgrade for my server. I might order another server from them just because they have a special going on, $1 setup fee. :)

Erwin 07-10-2003 06:41 AM

Yup, with 1200 Gb bandwidth per month... I can't use it all... :)

FlyBoy73 07-10-2003 07:46 AM

LOL, I am trying but have a long way to go. I was starting to worry about one of my forums 100+ gig's a month bandwidth habit (and watching it get larger by the month) but it should be covered for a good while now.
I can also toss the videos online for friends and family to download.

Don't dream of 5000+ members just yet, bandwidth goes sky high :(

DrkFusion 07-11-2003 02:25 AM

I wish I could develop a site big enough in need for a 'Type-Erwin' Server. I have no community actually but I hope the one I help for will grow :( It only has 2 members, and Im NOT one of them.

Alien 07-23-2003 11:00 AM

Been running on a RS dedicated server for about 2 months now, and couldn't be happier. :) Good to see so many fellow members here as part of the club!

I need another server now :(

I have a P4 2.4GHz with 1GB RAM and my server load is over 100% during half of the day. It's sad :(

If you have a busy site, check to see if your disk is swapping a lot. If so, upgrade to 2 GB RAM. It will help a lot.

How do I check that?

Edit: I also just found out that the maximum RAM I can have on my P4 at RS is 1.5GB so I will only be able to add 512MB of RAM.

Log into SSH, and run:

top

in the command line.

Keep it running. If the swap size keeps changing when your server is busy, it's time to upgrade your RAM.

N9ne 07-24-2003 12:00 PM

Well I was looking at 'top' yesterday for several hours when I had 180 online, and my conclusion:

Hardly any 'swap' is being used.

However: Sometimes, my RAM usage is EXTREMELY high. I have 1024MB RAM and there's only 70MB free right now (it's 2pm in UK)

Also, my server load seems to be above 0.8 for most of the day now, it's above 2 at peak times.

There really aren't many sites on my server to be honest. I don't know what's going on. I have 2 sites that are just using PHP (no MySQL) but are quite popular (not THAT popular) and then there's my forums; about 180 online at peak times.

Pentium 4 2.4Ghz
1GB RAM
cPanel 7.2.1 S85

That's one powerful server and handling those 3 sites should be no trouble yet it is trouble and for what reason I do not know. Server load is constantly high, RAM usage is sometimes very low, even at peak times, but sometimes its very very high...

help :(

NTLDR 07-24-2003 12:33 PM

N9ne are you using MySQL 3.x? If so I would recommend that you upgrade to MySQL 4.x and make sure you enable query caching.

N9ne 07-24-2003 12:34 PM

I've been using MySQL 4.0.12/4.0.13 for a few months now :)

Chris M 07-24-2003 05:11 PM

Have you enabled Queer catching? Sorry Query caching;):p
