Hacking Contest Sunday...Watch out! :-(

I saw a little blurb on CNN about a hacking contest on Sunday... I don't know who the targets are, but I imagine they'll be us little guys who don't have the financial means to take action against hackers... Be watching. I will.

Chris M 07-02-2003 08:33 PM

Meh...

Just backup your files and database Saturday evening, and pray they don't get you;)

Dan 07-02-2003 08:40 PM

Same thing here........ even though I don't think they will hit me since I have nothing

Chris M 07-02-2003 08:43 PM

Better to be safe than sorry;)

Heh, heard about it a while ago, sounds pretty cool.

Zelda-King 07-02-2003 09:53 PM

Make sure your antiviruses, firewalls and so on're up to date...and turn the settings high. :)

It's for defacing websites and its extraordinarily unlikely that they'll target small sites like ours but would instead go after bigger ones. Some will be found, some will be arrested and convicted.

DrkFusion 07-03-2003 03:45 AM

Well I will be participating in this competition, and I will be hacking small sites, as they have weak security, and most of them are on rackshack servers :p I am easily going to win this contest. Its not 500 mb, it is 5000 mb, and its 5000 mb added to the current space every month for a year. So that is around 15 gigs in 3 months.

I hope I win :)

And I suppose you have a legitimate source to back that up?

filburt1 07-03-2003 10:45 PM

It's a prediction, it can't have a source.

Erwin 07-04-2003 02:08 AM

Make sure you change your passwords etc. secure your admin directories with .htaccess - and update your server security.

DrkFusion 07-04-2003 02:20 AM

Im actually not going to bother because I know for a FACT I won't get hacked. The guy who manages the server is a hacker, wanted by all levels of law :p He takes care of the little kiddies in an instant. I will leave it to him ;) :pirate:

Erwin 07-04-2003 02:23 AM

Or, the alternative is to hack your own server, deface your own site, and claim the prize yourself. ;)

Dean C 07-04-2003 08:33 AM

Keptic - that is a bad outlook on things.

No matter who you are, how clever you are - there will always be people out there who are cleverer. Therefore i don't wish to alarm anyone but everyone is at risk...

I hope it works out ok for everyone here :)

I'm doing the best to tighten up security and have sent an email to my host to do a backup tonight.

Maybe they wanted a warning? Makes it all the more of a challenge for these people.

Brad 07-04-2003 04:50 PM

My parents heard about this, now they think the FBI is after me :x

good idea then no one will mess with it :) take all files down and put up one html that sais HAHAHAHAHA :)

sabret00the 07-05-2003 06:54 PM

someone posted about this on my site so you can read about it

http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?i...&category=main

and

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3044200.stm

not to mention

http://www.defacers-challenge.com/

it will be majorly risky but i have to wonder who they'll all go for

Rose 07-05-2003 07:09 PM

One thing's for sure - tomorrow should be an interesting day to surf the net. o_0

sabret00the 07-05-2003 07:11 PM

 if you'd call it that, from the sounds of it, it sounds like it's mainly gonna be corperate defacing, i reckon the biggest prizes will revolve around ms, apple, etc, but depending on the sites, can't really see it any defacement lasting +30 minutes, all in all, it will be a good day for the economy, all those ppl getting paid over time

kamu 07-05-2003 07:37 PM

is a measly 500 megs of web hosting worth being put away?

RDX1 07-05-2003 10:27 PM

It's the thrill not the prize

Hey bud, lighten up it was a joke. I am sure you as a very skilled moderator should of figured that out :p

Now here is a better bit of news. I doubt hackers will hack 'big' sites, but will hack sites that have known vulnerabilities. Stuff like ensim vulnerabilities etc. Remember their goal is to deface 6000, not the biggest. Be it 6000 small sites, I doubt they care. I am guessing they will actually go for the smaller sites as they barely take any action against them anyways.

So just a warning to users patch up your server software (main thing) get rid of passwords that are the name of your site, or your name. Get rid of passwords that have words from the dictionary. Be sure to use different assortments of numbers and letters, and symbols. Try to dissallow anonymous FTP's unless you know for a fact it is safe (ask your webhost).

Here is a personal warning to those on Ensim Servers. Upgrade and patch. Some of the versions you get by default on servers from companies like RackShack have versions which are so vulnerable. They are actually some of the easier ones to get into.

Back up your files and databases, and other important information. Ask your host to increase security and decrease any public accessable features.

Don't get too worried like some others. Just be at a level that you know you are safe. ;)

Erwin 07-06-2003 05:56 AM

Brace yourselves. :)

<a href="http://www.defacers-challenge.com" target="_blank">http://www.defacers-challenge.com</a> was hacked?

Chris M 07-06-2003 09:25 AM

Heh...

I changed most of my passwords to a 256 character randomnly generated password - Hack that:p

MGM 07-06-2003 09:31 AM

lmao! kamu, if defacers-challenge.com was hacked, that would be the most ironic thing!! LMAO!

I actually heard they wouldn't be hacking websites but servers. They say that the servers are going to be hacked because that takes down multiple sites. Then they got into this IP mumbo-jumbo about how sites with the same IP equal one point or whatever. IDK, ill look for the link again

*searches frantically at theregister.com*

MGM out

Tony G 07-06-2003 12:23 PM

Didn't think it would actually happen. *gasp* :p

Dean C 07-06-2003 03:01 PM

Any news on any sites yet?

There was a link posted in the Hacker Contest thread at vB.com with a list of sites that were supposedly hacked. :(

ETA - Here's an article on CNN.com http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/interne...eut/index.html
