vb-Passport system, a Global User Database.
With the initial release of vB3 Beta 3 came a directory in the zip file named 'server'. I believe this has been since removed from the release. This directory held what appears to be the unfinished vb-Passport system.
The system appears to make a Global User database from which other remote forums can get information from. The global server would contain information about users so that they can login to any site using the global database information. I would love to have a system like this at my disposal. I feel I could do quite a bit with it. I have been wanting something for my boards for quite some time now but feel unable to code such a hack. If anyone is interested in getting a fully functional version of a vb-portal type system going I would love to help/get involved in any way possible. Check my profile for contact information. I will also subscribe to this thread. Thanks!! |
Sounds great. When to await it?

gmarik, if you read the post, he wants somebody ELSE to code it. However, he wasn't clear as to what version he wants it for. He implied that he has seen the code for VB3, which gives me the impression that he's going to upgrade.
Consequently, it would be senseless to write this for VB2 AND it's really not even time to think about making hack requests for VB3 given that the code is still beta. |
Grr... this is the very thing that I came to post a request for. Not just a portal, but just a way that i can at least carry users from one forum to another.
Something more like making one forum category viewable on one web site (accessing the main database) and making the other categories (minus the special private forum category) on the main forum site. Is there a hack for this, or is there a trick to get this done? |
Actually this "vb-passport" idea was scrapped/

Great! I hated the idea. |

That's exactly why I put in a request for it. I realize that the vb3 code is still in the beta stages. More than anything im probing to see if there's anyone else with interest in a similar hack. |
so basicly all you want is sharing the same user database with all your forums?
i might very likely code it |
Yes, it can't be that complicated... please please code away!

I don't mean to sound negative here or anything, But this seems nearly impossible. To create some kind of global vb user database. I am not a coder myself, but I have some general knowledge, and this vb-passport idea would be incredibly hard to put together. Good Luck though! I would be interested to see what you are able to come up with. Then you would have to get vb users to go on with the plan.

well sharing the same database would be hard atall, just a couple of modifications in the sessions code and some other stuff.. i shall post an update in this thread later

It hasn't been scrapped, just put on the back burner for now. It could still see the light of day.

How feasible do you guys think replicating information about users from one forum db to other forum db would be?
Could we use MySQL's replicate function to keep all the forums sync'd with the same user information (JUST the appropriate user information)? If not, could a shell script be written to do this? I haven't looked at the vb3 db setup but I can't help but consider something simpler and local to the hardware. Any ideas? |
The trouble I would see with this is simple. Unless it was made by vbulletin and coded in such as in a config file. userdatabase= :forumdatabase=
This hack would be worthless for those who plan to ever upgrade ever again. It would be so intence that it could not be upgraded. Least IMO |
well... actually... this wouldn't be a bad idea... only, instead of automatically pulling the information across and all, you answer some questions like what's the forum URL you want to get your user name from, the user name you used on that forum and the password, along with some extra info to make sure that it's there account they're pulling over and it'll copy there information right over to the other person forum.
but, then again, this could be imposable (even tho, northing's imposable) |
any ideas on this! cross site users would be awesome!
