Site Finished..?

Hey has anyone found making styles with vb3 a bit quicker i just finished up my site www.artorg.co.uk , it took about 2 weeks to make the old style but this time round using vb3 it took well under a week..

anyone else find it abit quicker and more user friendly, keeping in mind its still beta.

It's great! The CSS that's been implemented is brilliant and it's all very well laid out and thought out, I think the devs did a great job on the new style editor...

Edit: a note about your forums: have you checked it on a high res? I'm running 1600x1200 and the category background image repeats twice.

Chris Gwynne 06-22-2003 06:43 PM

I'm waiting till it's offically released before I start anything with vB3. I've looked over it and it's okay, but I'd rather wait till all the bugs and the final style is done.

As for templating it looks a lot different, and maybe harder? than previously as they have all the IF statements etc in there. Plus as it is now the templates looks crap. Granted I've only spent 10 minutes in total looking over them. :)

Ditto.

sorry guys its meant for 1024x768 max at current but i,ll try to fix i promise ;)

yeah ive found the css to be great but at the same time its a bit unfriendly to newbs

N9ne 06-22-2003 08:41 PM

To be honest, vB3 is not for n00bs...it's quite advanced, especially the AdminCP. Personally I don't mind because I'm familiar with vBulletin but I can understand from a newcomer's viewpoint that vBulletin is complicated.

However the style manager is complicated to those who have the utmost experience too....

Chris Gwynne 06-22-2003 09:02 PM

I'm experienced with vB by over 2 years, but IMO the templating system will throw me off for a while; although I haven't really looked at it yet.

And for "newbs" ... uh huh, not a good way for vB to get new customers.

colicab-d 06-22-2003 10:13 PM

one example i had was adding an additional border round my forums. after defining it i then struggled for abit to get it to work using the css, but i got it lol.

theres also a few options that NEED extra defintion in css to work at all.. so be careful

Chris Gwynne 06-22-2003 11:04 PM

I'm curious as to how you've done extra colors etc? Have you hard coded them?

For instance, before in vB2 you'd use { timecolor } etc.. but what are the replacement variables in vB3, I asked at vB.com and they said they haven't been fully completed yet. So what did you do? :)

Shuriken-UK 06-22-2003 11:15 PM

pretty damn slick, if you check shurikenuk.com and see the border around the main site, im stumped as to how to do THAT on the forums, think you could gimme some pointers?

I personally am not a fan of the new template system. Firstly i hate the redirects. Heaven knows why they are there... and i'd be grateful if someone gave me a technical reason as to why they are there :)...

Also i hate the way that its all run by input buttons. When i was doing styles in vb2 if i needed to take some sample code from a template i would right click it and choose to open it in a new window. In vb3 i can't do this so it basically is wasting my time :(

Hopefully, but doubtfully, they'll restructure some if not all of the Templating System for the final release. That's a big hope though :(

colicab-d 06-23-2003 12:21 PM

i think they deff need a direct link to the actual templates in there, as i liked the direct link vb2.x had instead of this expanding and looking thru

sabret00the 06-24-2003 01:16 AM

i'll install it later and have a look thru it but it's quite exciting to have to redesign your whole boards, always alot of time -_-"

Dpcows 06-24-2003 07:22 AM

It took less then 2 hours to convert my vb2 skin to vb3.

All i did was chaging colors and added a header ;)

same here.

The style manager is confusing - I had great difficulty with it lol...
