CAUTION: If you only have 1 vB license, do not make your vB3 test forums public
This is in the README HTML file you downloaded with your vB3 Beta ZIP file:
Quote:
This is just a reminder since I have noticed many members running vB2 forums while posting links to their vB3 test forums as well. If you have only 1 license, then you have to make your vB3 test forums non-public. |
What defines non-public? Password protected directory or just an unpublished url?
|
It's described in the license agreement.
|
Thanks.

When are you upgrading, Smoothie?

I'm doing the same thing, maybe not as early as the RC's though.
|
Sorry about the n00b question, but what is the RC?
I just bought my vB2 license about a month or two ago, so the concept of moving to vB3 is a tad daunting. :) |
RC = Release Candidate
so it means the version can be released normally and will get gold if they don't find any bugs during a certain time period |

You could wait for others to run future RC's and see how stable they are before you do, avoiding any known bugs if they are found out. :)
|
Ok then...

Feh... my live forums are already upgraded and I'm planning on running a vB3 test board on my localhost on a un-net connected pc :)
Testboards rock for working on styles with no one around to mess you up :) |
I'm not going to upgrade until at least 3.3.0, then and only then will i know it's finished and without any bugs :D
|
I'm not going to upgrade until at least 4.0
|
I'm not going to downgrade until 4.0 is out:p
Satan |
Shouldn't discussion like this ("CAUTION: If you only have 1 vB license, do not make your vB3 test forums public") be kept to the "official" vBulletin Community Forums?!
|
This is just a reminder for members here, that's all, since a few of them were linking to their vB3 test forums here. :)

I am also trying to setup a test forum for my client. the original forum has some major issues that can't be repaired without the posibility of loosing the whole site, as well as reinstalling all the hacks.
So I would like to install a test forum in this dir. "http://www.yoursite.com/testvb/forums/install/install.php" while still having the org at "http://www.yoursite.com/forums/index.php" But when I saw step 2 in the install instructions, "empty the database." I was wondering if the original Database would be overwritten, thus distroying the org site. Or am I O.K. to go. as long as I don't choose to empty the Database? I'm a click away from the test install. Thanks in advance. |
First off, BACKUP your database!! Either locally to your PC or on a file stored on your server.
Secondly, install the test forum on a seperate database than the live forum. Do a clean install, then take the backup and upload it into the new database. |

Thanks for the fast response!
I have backed up the database and the site. I went to MYSQL and found a second database that is empty. My question is this, When I go to install, will I be prompted as to which database to use? Also, where would a MYSQL noob get clear, understandable information on setting up a database/adding a database for VB. Thanks again. |

You are allowed to have 2 instances of Vb running, as long as one is in a testvb directory and is not available to the public, i.e. .htaccess password protected, if you have cpanel hosting you can do this by going in to your cpanel and choose the icon that says Password Protect Directories, choose your testvb directory and assign a user name and password to it :) |
I run my testvb forum on my localhost, is it counted too :)
|
*gg*
just one? i think i have 10 vb's on my localhost ;) |
I don't use any localhost boards, just because I am too lazy to install, configure, etc. apache. Mostly I don't feel like running apache everytime I feel like messing around on a testboard. So instead I throw them on public webspace and have them .htaccess'd off. :p

i keep them, so i can test further, and do my upgrades faster ;)

Then theres the 8 IPB versions, 6 phpbb and 2 ubb that I also have htaccessed on my main testing webserver. I've formatted my secondary webserver today which lost me another 6 vb's and 12 IPB's OK I sound like a BB addict! |
If you put it behind a .htaccess that's not public, so it's fine. :)
