Don't Ask Me Again..... !!!

 How do I add the

[_] Remember username/password checkbox

thing which appears just under the log in username/password name input boxes of some of the vBulletin boards I've seen... (I was just told it will be a standard feature of vB 3.0 .0) Can I get some coding that can make this feature on my board now?

seems like just a couple of simple lines of code, has anyone done this?

filburt1 06-13-2003 07:48 PM

This is already a preference in the user CP.

:surprised: It is? My fav vB'er Stevie M. just directed me over here from the non vBorg board with the idea that it would have to be a hack request if I wanted it for a NON 3.0.0 board.

What is the sequence I would use to get to this selection on my current board (vb2.3.0)?

Control Panel ==> ______?? ==> ______??

Just look around...it's pretty obvious when you see it.

 Ummmm, I looked, but I'm kinda doubtful of that....?

That's a vB3 feature. Adding this to 2.3.0 requires hacking. You can ask over at vbulletin.org.

Xube, what you're looking for is the same thing, just different text: "Automatically login when you return to the site? (uses cookies)"

:) No guys, from what I can tell, you are referring to an individual user changing his preferences from within his own control panel so that when he logs onto a board it sets permanent cookies. What I'm trying to add is a lil' check box on the main page of a board. The check box appears next to the USERNAME & PASSWORD log in boxes... by checking this check box ...and then entering your password when you are on the board's welcome page it sets your login cookies to the type so that it automatically re-logs you on when you revisit the board... (ie: it allows users to make this change without ever having to go to their individual user control panel)

Look here: vBulletin.com main board page

.... at the top of that page of vB 3.0.0. (I guess the only way you will be able to see it is if you haven't already set your prefs to automatically log you on when you go over and visit vBulletin.com) right under the Username/Password login boxes is a 3rd small box that you can check if you want your logon to be automatic on visits.

 Is this a doable?

filburt1 06-13-2003 10:55 PM

This is identical to the user CP, just putting the checkbox on a different page.

:( No, the coding would have to be different, because in the user control panel, the selection process consists of TWO radio buttons. You either select YES or NO. Not the same thing as having a single checkbox as on the 3.0.0 board. The coding input logic is different.

HTML and PHP-wise, they're practically the same.

I just don't see the benefit. I mean, you log in and set the settings correctly in the user CP, and you never have to do it again. Also, the setting is turn on by default at registration.

:( So I guess it is harder to write the code for this than I had expected. I will make a request down in the request area... I thought it was so simple that it wouldn't require that.

The reason to create this... Well, the braintrusts here at vBulletin have thought this out and have added this handy checkbox to vB 3.0.0 for a reason (and they are good reason(s)...)
  • Basically, some board users are not that well aquainted with the operations of the user control panel. We must constantly remember that gui needs to be designed to be EASY for web newbies to work with and certainly clicking a single box on the board's main index page at log in is easier than going down the 3 or 4 click levels required to go to the user Control panel.
  • Some board users are just lazy :D (this may not be the right descriptive word for it but...) you know some will just not do it... and clearly there will be more who will by having the box up there near the log-in
  • Re: "It's defaulted to set it this way at your initial sign-up"... Well, a simple search on vB.com regarding users needing to go and set their cookies this way to resolve many of the problems they experience re: log-offs... aol issues.... etc shows that many don't choose to set their cookz this way at initial sign in
  • If there really was "no Benefit" to creating this kind of checkbox, vBulletin 3.0.0 would simply not have it there. It is a matter of convenience, and well thought out board design

If I am successful at aquiring the code to create this lil' checkbox thing... I will come back to this thread and post an answer for others who have been following the discussion and who also may want this type of feature installed on their boards as well.

 Thanks all, I hope I'm able to find this.
