I have started anew on making this. It is coming along very nicely.

I started from scratch on it yesterday, and i already have the messager window working, and allowing people to message back and forth. It is also very easy on the database taking up only one row per conversation. This row also is cleaned up when the im session is over.
The buddy list has been started as well, but it is ugly as hell as of yet :p
On the Message windows there are already 4 icons. They are block, Add Buddy, Download Log, Clear Log.
I am working on adding many more features, as well as allowing font and bg color changes..

Attached to this post is a Log From a conversation i had testing it.

You will notice it is logged backwards. I plan to fix that, keep in mind i have only been working on this a day now :p

It's a very nice concept but it just can't be powered completely by PHP for bandwidth and server usage reasons. Are you using an applet or ActiveX control?

no filburt, it is solely php and mysql, with a nice handful of javscript

It might be a tad pushy with bandwidth, but you can set the intravals it reloads, as well as many other features that will be in the admin panel. It also cleans up after itself in the database, so database size and use should not be a problem.

nice job there zajako. honestly, if you could ever come up with a working version of this feature, i'd say you'd have to be considered (or at least in my mind) hacker of the year! heck, maybe even decade! seriously, keep up the great work mate! ;)

This is just a variation of the shoutbox or chatbox, though, isn't it, if it's based on PHP? Anything based on PHP will rely of refreshing, and would be server intensive.

Erwin, no this is not just a variation of the shoutbox, This is made to be extremly easy on the database, and with it refrshing, as i said earlier you can set it to refresh at 30 seconds, if you really wanted, which would not at all be server intensive. Im testing it out at 10 second refresh rate, and it seems to handle fine.

This is actualy less server intencive than the whos online page, which also uses refreshing.

But Erwin i know your a big on conserveing badnwidth, so before i release this anywhere, i would like it if you were to go over it and give me your advice on lighting up the load, if it needs it.

well i have modifyed it to allow me to kidnap members and bring them to a page that allows me to chat with them, which alone would be a nice hack to release, however, im waiting to test it a bit more.

The admin panel for this kidnapper is kinda cool, it lets me type their username in, then choose a channel to kidnap them with (1-5) then i hit submit and it brings me to a messenger page where i wait for them to show up(on their next click) :]

I'm interested in how you did this, since i have had an instant messaging hack of my own working for over 6-7 months now. It uses php, mysql and js and the strain on the server is barely noticeable.

I have it creating sessions of sort, and making it so that when sessions end it cleans up after them.

The database only has the number of open sessions as rows at any given time.

Also each row only has 5 columns

also it will auto clear the logs if they get larger than X which will be set in the database.

This is looking excellent, as well. I have a few questions.

1. This instant messenger, you mentioned, has a limit of five channels. Does that mean that only five pairs of one-on-one sessions can be permitted?

2. I have an extremely active site with 3500 users that visit every week. (We clean out inactive accounts to keep our membership at a realistic figure.) Have you tried this implementation on a wide-scale usage?

The limit is not 5 channels, i created a kidnapping hack with this, that had 5 channels. This hack will have as many channels the admin will allow (more meaning more server load). And yes this also means that if there is not enough channels left it will not permit another session.

I have not tested this on a wide scale usage yet, though i hope to soon after i get a good solid beta.

I might release the admin kidnap hack seperately, its very helpful for discussing displinary matters almost in person, for those who don't publisize their aim names. That i have tested many times, and it works great :]

hellsatan if i am correct is making a version you download rather than my version which is browser baced. The great part about my version is if you are logged into the board, your logged into the messenger. This makes it so that you don't have problems with people not using the service cause they don't want to wait for their buddylist to load or what not. Also i plan to integrate into the whos online system, so you can message people in the whos online section by clicking an icon next to their name.

as soon as i have a steady beta, I don't have the buddy list done yet, and i also have a few things im working on with the Instant Messeage sessions.

But i plan to get teh beta going soon.

me and a friend have plans of making one also for my pop music network site and this is the design of the messagner it self. and its planned to work very much like msn useing java mysql php it will also be like a live chat so members pop up and off like right away on it.

it will not be out for a hack right away due to the fact its mainy for my own site and use but who knows if it all works good it might be let out, but people are already working for one to come out here so i let them do it for people here sorry.

very nice C.Birch though the whole point of mine is to not use java. members dont like to load it if it uses java its a lot harder on the cp, and has laoding tiem. With mine it makes the user always logged in. THough mine is on a slight pause right now due to vb3's release and my companies software needing to be ported.

Indeed, but I hope this will be compatible with 2.3.0 as well. It would be very difficult for me to upgrade my board to vB3. :p

If it is already working fine on vB 2.3.0, I suggest it be released (soon). Otherwise, you might as well wait until vB 3 goes gold :)
