Image gallery solution!

There are many gallery hacks that have been released. Please correct me if i am wrong, but every one of them has major bugs, dont work properly or are dificult to install.

I appologise if this insults anybody but let me know if i am wrong.

I think I have a solution to this problem, and this will be my next hack!

N9ne 04-19-2003 02:32 PM

Ok...lol

trafix 04-19-2003 02:57 PM

ok....I have tested my theory

And It Works!

Time for me to get creative again......

after i have a smoke..lol

Dean C 04-19-2003 03:11 PM

Smoking kills.... :p

amykhar 04-19-2003 03:11 PM

Be careful what you choose to smoke. Smoking the wrong thing might be the cause of all the bugs you were complaining about. ;)

Amy

trafix 04-19-2003 03:16 PM

Yeah I know, if its not the smoking that kills me the stress will! :(

Oh well, Ive decided that i will go to bed as i have to work tomorrow :(

I will code the hack in the next couple of days, I wust wanted to test my theroy and get some feedback regarding other gallery hacks. Dont ask me how im going to do it cos im not telling.....YET...but it will work!

NanoEntity 04-19-2003 06:43 PM

I see a hell of a lot of views, lost of replies but only 14 users .....hmmmmm

I agree the screen shots look great. but looks lenghty to install.

N9ne 04-20-2003 12:36 AM

DrkFusion 04-20-2003 03:41 PM

No, Arunan's doesn't work, well it works but not good, he needed my help on his gallery which he was supposed to release here. Im just busy with school, I have not been able to catch him online as of yet.

trafix 04-20-2003 05:54 PM

hmm, ok well I have only just returned home from work and I am STUFFED. normally for me its hack first then sleep but im sorry guys but for now its sleep first and hack later :)

I will start this hack tomorrow.

colicab-d 04-21-2003 09:08 AM

hey trafix can i beta test it out for ya.. i run a graphics community and were looking for a good gallery hack :D

Dean C 04-21-2003 12:18 PM

Ditto ;)

trafix 04-21-2003 01:54 PM

OK

I now have a demo operating on my site.

This version does not have thumbnail support yet and there is still some other bits to do such as adding page navigation and user gallery automation.

I havnt made this live to my members as yet but you are more than welcome to add approiate images if you are a member.

There is still a lot of work to do until i can release a beta version but tell me what you think of my "Thread Gallery"

As it is there is no extra upgrades or installs required for the server, I think you will understand the way it works when you look at it if the name hasnt given it away :)

Thread Gallery

Dean C 04-21-2003 02:40 PM

Looking good so far - hope you pack it with admin cp controllable features ;)

- miSt

majin gotenks 04-21-2003 11:08 PM

yeah looks pretty good so far. we really need a good gallery hack :)

trafix 04-21-2003 11:25 PM

Ok,

Mist, I thought you knew me by now....lol the admin cp is my fav part of my hacks :) I just havent built it yet for the thread gallery.

Well, if you approve, I will build the admin for it as it is ay the moment and then pack it and release it as a beta.

I will then continue to work on stuff like page navigation, thumbnails (if required) etc.

Didn't want to steal the opportunity from people like you. :) And I also promised Overgrow (who generously shared his code even though I didn't use much of it) that I wouldn't release the hack. My gallery looks a lot like his, and so I didn't want to disrespect his wishes.

Good luck to you.

trafix 04-22-2003 07:51 AM

UPDATE:

1) Added the ability to display each gallery individually with images or link (to save bandwidth :) )

2) Still working on admin area :(

colicab-d 04-22-2003 10:19 AM

yo trafix plz send a beta of that my way asap :D

trafix 04-22-2003 01:40 PM

Headache!!!!

See http://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery -- full blown automotive image gallery with admin functionality and integration with VBulletin. I've worked on this on and off for 2 years.

Features:
-Each user has a gallery
-Each gallery can have multiple albums
-Each album can have multiple images
-Automatic thumbnail generation (Imagemagick)
-Image resizing
-Add caption to images
-Caching of resized/captions images to disk to reduce CPU load (ie, Imagemagick is only called once per sized image generation and saved to disk). You can turn this feature off if you have limited drive space.
-Blocking of outside image linking (ie, bandwidth theft)
-Column sorting in display
-User can vote on galleries, albums and images
-Administrative functions
-User can add their favorite links to gallery
-Other registered users can leave comments
-Users can sort image order in albums
-more....

Well apart from the shabby HTML it looks awesome motorhaven :)!

- miSt

motorhaven 04-24-2003 11:43 AM

Yeah... its so shabby we're getting 300,000+ uniques a month. Everyone's a freaking art critic.

Erwin 04-24-2003 12:07 PM

motorhaven, you have a huge forum. :)

There are currently 111 members and 151 guests on the boards. | Most users ever online was 602 on 04-08-2003 at 02:53 AM.

It's not all about looks, it's also about function. Well done. :)

majin gotenks 04-24-2003 12:10 PM

Well if you didnt want criticism you shouldnt have posted that then.

motorhaven 04-24-2003 12:30 PM

I'm sorry... you're right, I forgot that some people are more impressed with kewl than function and features.

Pardon me, I'm going to put on a backwards baseball cap, buy a Honda with a fart muffler and act like a rapper (yo) --- it impresses 14 year olds.

motorhaven 04-24-2003 02:52 PM

I'm better now... coffee has finally kicked in. :) (Though I still don't know what's wrong with my html? :) )

Dean C 04-24-2003 03:44 PM

Hehe i meant it constructively. Basically its just simple plain html. It would look far better if you used vb's standard html as a model or tried to simply inject some color into it. I'm just going from memory here as i get the server busy error :)

- miSt

Logikos 04-27-2003 11:15 PM

"motorhaven" Great site, dont worry about the html of your site. As big as your board is, im sure your members appreciate the speed of your server. Adding graphics to you html would just slow them down. Great job man.

motorhaven 04-27-2003 11:51 PM

We're starting to run in to server speed issues right now and growth has suffered as a result. As I've migrated more and more functionality to the database its gotten worse.

We're installing a second server next week and adding another gig of ram to the current server.

Dean C 04-28-2003 12:56 PM

[]/[]emesis - Adding color would simply make it look better - there's no need for graphics :)

motorhaven 04-28-2003 01:01 PM

The entire theme of my site is grey and blue, just like Ford Motor Company's colors. Its appropriate for the target audience.....

Dean C 04-28-2003 05:48 PM

Ok i accept your point :)
