Options Advisor

This hack adds a page to your admin CP which analyzes your options and gives advise on what to change.

Very nice for the newbie to vB :).

filburt1 03-29-2003 03:13 PM

Experienced users should use it too because not all of the default vB options are ideal.

VampireMan 03-29-2003 03:18 PM

interesting mod , im sure a couple of the admins on my forums will find it usefull... clicks install

NuclioN 03-29-2003 03:20 PM

Click install, nice filbert. Not al the advizes (shut down memberlist etc) are an option for us but it's a good reminder. :)

Dean C 03-29-2003 04:26 PM

Agreed, very helpful! I hadn't looked at the options in ages (ok, slighty exaggerated) and there were some good suggestions in the Advisor.

thanks turtle! :D

limey 03-29-2003 07:38 PM

It reminded me that I still had "Maximum Characters per post" set to 50,000 (for a member who wanted to post a huge essay a few months ago), and I was still including template names in templates from troubleshooting a problem last month.

The only mistake it made, was to report: "Use email form? (value: 0): With this option off, e-mail addresses are publicly exposed. This can make your site a haven for spammers.", when I had "Display email addresses" (allow public viewing of email addresses) set to no.

Thanks
Jbear6

filburt1 03-30-2003 01:37 AM

Personally I'm not sure what the difference between the two options is. The descriptions don't really help based on my experience.

alkatraz 03-30-2003 07:27 AM

awesome ! thank you filburt1

wooolF[RM] 03-30-2003 07:26 PM

]Installed, nice one

Just one remark :

Notify about new members (value: ): While not a security risk, you should enter in your e-mail address for this setting to be quickly warned about potential troublemakers who register.

Heh, I have about 200-300 new members every day, I think it's a bad idea to use e-mail notification here :D

Yuber 03-30-2003 09:16 PM

Thanks filburt

What will this do to options added by other modifications?
Will they just be skipped by the advisor or will they cause an error?

I like the idea of this, good stuff filburt :)

filburt1 04-17-2003 05:34 PM

They'll be ignored, especially because it would have no clue on what advice to give.

Alien 04-19-2003 01:43 AM
