1 Mbps!

Guys, my provider upgraded my 384kbps DSL connection to 1 MBPS! I even checked my upstream with Cnet, and, sure enough, they weren't lying. Upstream, which is obviously generally slower, was 789kbps!

And the best part is it's still only $49.95/mo.! Cool or what?!

filburt1 03-25-2003 02:02 AM

Meh, my cable has a theoretical maximum of 10 MBits (which of course it never hits) for about the same price...

Boofo 03-25-2003 03:24 AM

For that same price we are supposed to be at 1.5 MB, although as more people get on it does slow down a bit.

Broekie 03-25-2003 05:24 AM

I've got 4 (100Mbit) connections directly connected to the 1000Mbit SurfNET network for free :p

Mark Hewitt 03-25-2003 09:19 AM

I'm on 512k at home for £25 a month, I could pay £35 and have 1MBit, but don't currently need it. I believe they are starting a 2MBit service for £50 a month, but I believe I would need new hardware installed for that (however they do provide it for free).

At work I have a faster connection. The video conferencing system I run (accessgrid) has been known to put out 30Mbit of multicast traffic.

Kars10 03-25-2003 09:24 AM

I am on 768 @ home for 25?. :)

Tony G 03-25-2003 09:41 AM

Damn you Cable users. :p

*Stays Slow Behind*

Erwin 03-25-2003 10:37 AM

Over here in Australia, I'm on 1.5 Mbps ADSL. :)

Is that NTL that is going to start 2Mbps?

Telewest Broadband.

N9ne 03-25-2003 07:15 PM

Doh! That's the trouble, if your area is covered by NTL, it's not by Telewest, and vice versa, because those two companies are connected in some way...

Hopefully NTL bring out a 2Mbps connection...:(

Chris M 03-25-2003 07:22 PM

Hehe...Screw you all:p

My dad has access to 2 650Mb/second lines:D

And before you all shout "BULLSH**", about 10-50Mb/second of each line is designated for Internet, shared between 10 computers in his work...i.e. 10mb/second for each person if they are all on...The rest is a massive network connection, but it can be adapted for internet usage if needbe:)

@Home however, I am stuck with a measly 56k...But all you UK users? You really pay ?50/month for 1.5Mb/second?

If this service in our village starts up, we will get 2mb/second for ?25 a month:)

Satan

Mark Hewitt 03-25-2003 07:23 PM

No. NTL and Telewest are not connected. Althought there has been talk of a merger for years.

Quite simply they've divided up the cable areas between them, as it's not viable to two cable companies to be serving the one area. Also I'm not sure but there may be some laws either now in the past meaning only one company can cable a particular area.

colicab-d 03-25-2003 07:31 PM

yeah so whos good for asdl etc in uk? i want a decent connection for about £25

Chris M 03-25-2003 07:48 PM

I'm sorry...If I told you the name of the company, I would have to kill you with my car;):p:D:p

N!ck 03-25-2003 10:33 PM

:( and i thought i was getting the best deal on here

superman 03-26-2003 12:41 AM

damn the dsl tower!!! I'm like 4 blocks away form being outside the limit, so it's pretty damn slow, I think it's supposed to be the 428 or whatever, but my ping in counter-strike is like 150 average *sulks* I know that's pathetic, I'm hoping my parent's will switch to cable cause there is only ONE other cable user in the whole neighborhood pool cause it's a brand new subdiviion thingy

I've got pretty good friends here at school ;)
My servers are 4 of the 5 servers connected to a 1000Mbit SurfNET connection, all with a 100Mbit NIC.
So each one of them gets a full 100Mbit :P

SURFnet is the national computer network for higher education and research in the Netherlands. SURFnet connects the networks of universities, colleges, research centres, academic hospitals and scientific libraries to one another and to other networks in Europe and the rest of the world. SURFnet is part of the world wide Internet. The SURFnet network enables its users to communicate with other network users and to consult the Internet from their office or their home PC. SURFnet provides rapid and reliable connections to educational institutions and research centres abroad using advanced technologies and high-quality infrastructure.

And no, that's not ment to be an advertisement, just a bit of info (I don't work for SurfNET, 'cause if I did, I'd have a 2Gbit link on each of my servers ;))

colicab-d 03-26-2003 08:42 AM

hmm i,ll need to look into getting some asdl for me flast i think :p. Tho i hear if you live in Japan you can get 100mbit lines for your home subsidied by the government :(

Damnit again, any fast DSL connection is far too expensive for me ATM. :(

epsilon 03-28-2003 07:56 PM
