[vB.org] Remembering The First Hacks Of Our Time

[THIS TOOK ALOT OF RESEARCH SO I'D BE PLEASED IF YOU COMMENT ON THIS. THANK YOU]

Hello everyone. :)

From back in the day when Ed Sullivan made the first opening annoucment to the present when FireFly overturned the administration, vBulletin.org has come along way. I remember visiting the site as a guest back in 2000 and viewing some of the first and newest hacks. I remember seeing UBBHackers as an affiliate. But most importantly it was the hacks that had hounded my mind. Those which most are now official parts of this beautiful software. Here are ten which I researched on and looked deeper into.

I hope you like it. As you can see vBulletin.org has indeed come along way. Without it, I don't believe we would have as many features in vBulletin. Thanks. Regards,

- Crater Seraph

P.S.
Remember, we are the ones weaving the software on the course of greatness. So....keep on hackin'!

Indeed it has, i await to see what comes out of this great community when vB 3 is released. :)

shovel 03-20-2003 09:36 PM

Yes, though I already believe it will have a great and powerful reaction keeping vBulletin going many years to come.

DrkFusion 03-20-2003 09:52 PM

It Ed Sullivan, the same one from that show back in the 80s or 70s or something?

The Ed Sullivan show

lol i remember back in the day when i put together the quick reply for yabb gold god that was funny and al its beta`s that messed up. Thnk god for things like vb

As for vb3 look at quick reply theres just one example of how a hack here has influenced every bb available today nearly, not to mention its now built into vb3.

For more history here is the first thing I posted inthe developer's loung at vB when I became a developer on 12-07-2000

John I faxed my 'contract' in today.

Now some questions.

Are you expecting us to just fix bugs or are we going to actually code. I can think of a few things that would be really nice to put in, i.e. my hacks

1 - Custom User Titles (Allow users to change their titles based on postcount)

2 - Your avatars are nice but we really need an option to have it scan a directory and pick up images other than a few smilies. I don't think we need to go so far as mine does based on user posts = more images. I prefer to have pages for icons but others prefer to use javascript and a combobox to scroll through images.

3 - Need to put those new message and last post indicators in the search. Are they there? Who knows since it is disabled.

4 - Fix the indexing so search by usernames actually works and replace the space delimiter with a comma. Then my dot hack can slide in nicely since it just reads the userindex of a thread to determine if a user posted, involves no queries.

5 - CALENDAR I need to see what you are doing with that birthday field so that I can adapt it to the calendar. It doesn't look very useable and I suspect it is saved as a string since you don't force a format on the user as I do using 3 comboboxes (1 for day, year and month)

etc..

id love to see a forum running an original vb like its first public release, that be funny

Chris Gwynne 03-20-2003 11:20 PM

Yeah colicab, I came into vBulletin when it was around 2.0.1, before that, I know nothing lol

It's like an ancient history lesson. Only instead of dead people it's of forums.

Way back then I was a UBB user/customer and I remember when Who's Online/Private Messages came out. 2 of the greates addons in history on forums imo. But anyways the first time I ever saw or heard of a VB was 2.0.1. Several months later here I am a VB customer person thingy. :) *thumps up*

One of the mods at vB.com has exactly that (well, a 1.x.x). Look in their sigs.

The good old days... :) When men were men, and the buffalos ran free...

shovel 03-21-2003 11:31 AM

Yes, the good ole' days. :)

Xenon 03-21-2003 11:45 AM

always nice to remember :)

shovel 03-21-2003 12:27 PM

I'm going to look farther into it later and get some more on the first hacks. This is quite fun. :)

flup 03-21-2003 05:05 PM

Someone already found the link w/ 1.x.x forum?

Xenon 03-21-2003 07:43 PM

you are searching a link? ^^

flup 03-21-2003 08:16 PM

yes, it has to be in a userprofile / signature.
But cant find it.

shovel 03-22-2003 02:35 PM

Or you can just search an engine like Google. Here's one...

Overgrow 03-22-2003 02:50 PM

On my 1.1 (to 1.x versions) I had installed: Private Messaging (PM) 1.2.x, Smilie & BBCode Optimization, Favorites, and Kill File [aka ignore users]. I made the list! How exciting :D

Here is what I looked like with 1.1.3 (236 users online!)-->

http://web.archive.org/web/200112010...edge/index.php

shovel 03-22-2003 03:18 PM

Lol. Your forums have never changed Overgrow, they're still just as popular.

Overgrow 03-22-2003 05:07 PM

and my vB 3.1.2 (when it's stable) will look just like my vB 1.1.3 up there.. People love consistency :)

Thanks for the list, fun topic for the oldsters here.

Dean C 03-22-2003 05:24 PM

people love cannabis - not consistency ;)

Crater Seraph - just to let you know - your showing up as unlicensed...

rake 05-03-2003 09:10 AM

I remember when i first saw vbullletin... I was using a UBB back then and was all skeptic about this new software called "vbulletin". I remember the old ubbdev forum and old hacks such as UBBIntegratedPoll or qasic's Who's Online. I've still got those on my computer. Everything advances so fast on the internet nowadays. I miss the old days. :(

Tony G 05-03-2003 11:12 AM

Ahh, such a long time ago. I didn't see much until I started coming as a guest. ;)

futureal 05-04-2003 07:08 PM

For what it's worth, FlashKit (www.flashkit.com) was running a v1.x vBulletin up until just a few months ago, when they finally upgraded.

Zach 05-22-2003 05:30 PM

Was their a time vBulletin did not exist?

Actually vBulletin probably was the one thing that turned me from a columnist on a website to someone that can do pretty much what ever he please using php and dhtml. I went from not being able to install the first version we bought, 1.1 I think.

I was a mod on footballboards.com/forumhome/insiders now back when vB first came out so I have gotten the privilage to watch it grow from one step past the start.

Heck I remember when Ed and those guys where first hired by vBulletin. My fav though is looking through old posts and finding at least one thread with me showing one of the current developers how to do something (very basic at that, but dang it sure wasnt two years ago to me).

majin gotenks 05-23-2003 12:40 PM

ahh the memories :P

FWF 09-02-2003 10:28 PM

shovel 09-03-2003 02:16 AM

Wow, you know what's bad. My SN on vB.org used to be Crater Seraph. Lol.

Erwin 09-03-2003 02:27 AM
