Hasn't anyone done a classifieds yet?

I have seen a ton of requests for a classifieds hack and/or a non-vb script that can integrate into vb. I think there are some that are close, but none that I know of that actually integrate into vb.

Does anyone have any information on this? We really need a classifieds system - something more professional than posting a forum for that kind of purpose.

Thanks..

The only one i have seen is one that has been ported for vbportal

Just make a forum for it and allow attachments. :bunny:

Where does one find this package? I haven't had much luck searching for it..

Thanks!

Looks a lot more like a banner ad manager than a classifieds system, but I'll take a closer look...

Know what would be a neat classifieds system to integrate?

http://classifieds.phpoutsourcing.com

If any of their files required modification you'd need to ask them first. I've been playing with this some and it's a pretty neat script. If someone could manage a VB integration that allows usergroup specification it would be really nice.

13th_Disciple 04-21-2004 05:29 PM

damn.. that little deal is nice.. i actually like the look of that script.. and most classified scripts look ugly as heck.. nice to see someone put some thought and effort into a good overall design..

welo 04-21-2004 05:41 PM

It really is pretty nice. Some things you must do to administer it aren't all that apparent right off the bat so you need to poke around (like you cannot manage categories from the admin area). Even so, it's pretty easy if you know where to look.

Anyway, if one of you wizards could manage an integration it would sure save a lot of folks from having to spend $550 on a system like Evson. That's just ridiculous, and I bet phpOutsourcing would appreciate the additional exposure.

the VB trader is the only hack that caters for classifieds apart from auctions

The folks at Photopost just released their Photopost Classifieds system:

free/ open source is so much more inviting these days..

That is true in some cases - but some people don't have alot of time to rewrite code to their liking. Others like the option of support and installation services.

Here's an example of a community with integrate Classifieds, Photo Post and Product Reviews:

http://www.viperalley.com/classifieds/index.php (Classifieds)
http://www.viperalley.com/gallery/index.php (Photo Gallery)

Using a product like ours allows you to integrate with your existing community. PhotoPost 4.8 (in testing) and Classifieds 1.2 (both shown above) use vB's user selected styles:

http://www.photopostdev.com/photopost/index.php (vb3 integration)
http://www.photopostdev.com/classifieds/index.php (vb3 integration)
http://www.photopostdev.com/reviews/index.php (ReviewPost, about to be upgraded with new portal and style upgrades)

By maintaing a similiar look and feel across your features (coupled with the integrated user system), your users will feel comfortable in any of the areas on your site.

I'm not knocking open source, I've used it. More often than not it was a good starting point as I'd spend many hours customizing it to my site. Eventually I'd outgrow it and look for something else or, in my case, rewrite the application to suit my needs.

Always research your options - it can save you alot of time in the long run.

vB3 doesn't really need classifieds...

set up a subscription forum, set the subscription to 1 day. Have them pay what ever through paypal. Then allow all users to edit/delete their own threads. Bang, done. No code hack at all.

I disagree. A real Classifieds system needs more structure than just starting a subscription forum.

It really should have:
1. Required fields for information like price, location, condition, contact info, etc.
2. Sortable fields (ie. sort by location or price)
3. Different levels of paid ads (ie. free text ads, premium photo ads, extra premium for more photos or video, paid featured spot on home page, etc.)
4. Email notification for those looking for a certain item (ie. a potential buyer gets an email when a new item is listed that matches their subscribed keyword or location)
5. Time limits on ads before they automatically expire

A nice Classifieds hack would have items 1-3. Items 4 and 5 would be a bonus and make a perfect system IMO.

I disagree also,
I run a mustang site.
It would be nice to have something like this:

--wanted to buy
--cars for sale
--car parts for sale
--misc for sale <---anything else, tv's, dvd's, books, etc
--Vendors <----pay a small fee to list several parts in the forum
--Vendors <----pay a monthly fee to have their own section set up

Does anyone know how this was done on this site. He has a classifieds adds button at the top, then when clicked it brings you to this forum: http://www.rs25.com/forums/forumdisp...?s=&forumid=41

What part specifically about that site are you asking about? Mostly it just looks like they created new standard forums as their classifieds. Am I missing something special there?

I just think it was a good Ideal. Most mustang sites either have a for sale or a wanted to buy section on their main forum. no one has a system like he has. I just think it would be cool, especially for larger boards.
