Do most Hosts track MySQL Calls?

I'm hosted with VenturesOnline and appearantly the server I am paying for only supports 800,000 MySQL "calls". I was talking with them and my forum is currently push 2,000,000 MySQL calls. They said that if I would like to continue to be hosted with them that I would need to upgrade my server hosting. But the lowest server that meets that requirement is 109 bucks a month. Needless to say, I am having a difficult time just paying the 25 bucks a month.

I was thinking of signing up with www.RackNine.com and use their enterprise plan. It offers 2500 MB Webspace 50 GB/Mo. Bandwidth and only costs 30 bucks a month.

Suggestions comments? I think I just slipped with a rock and a hard place. :(

Time to upgrade. I agree with VO wholeheartedly. However again you should keep in mind whether you want a VPS with VO or somewhere cheaper - you get better service and uptime with VO, as to the "you get what you pay for" rule.

You really need to move a vps at best, seriously. Or at very least you need to remove the enourmous amount of bloat you have on the forums now.

bloat? My forums have nothing to remove. It's all news baby. Posting over 100 news posts every weekday and having people looking at each thread from http://www.3dNewz.com is most likely what has done it.

Thanks for the advice.

You might want to try steps to reduce the query calls. But that's irrelevant because if you want to continue with the expansion of your board then you are going to have to consider upgrading anyway. :)

Yep. That's the conclusion I came to as well. I'm also thinking about adding PhotoPost, which shouldn't help the problem much either.

True. Well the best thing to do is either stop wasting your money now or if you feel that you want to carry on start making provisions on things by reducing pointless hacks and perhaps disabling pm's, calendar, attachments, avatars etc...

Out of 2,000,000 calls, will disabling those things really make that big of a dent? I'm not sure, but I think most of it is the news I provide. Pages that include 50 plus news topics on a page and each topic access a forum thread. I think that's what's causing it. I know there are probably faster loading news scripts out there, I have hacked my Pluh news stuff so much that I have gotten it just the way I want it. I'm currently trying to get affilated with a network to get some funding.

Here's hoping.

I would have said disabling all those things i mentioned would have reduced the query amounts DRAMATICALLY!

no offense, most of those 'news posts' are copyright news from other sites, and all you're doing is republishing their copyrighted news.

i take pride in my news, i write it all myself :p

anyways ..

seems like you could use a dedicated server, site seems rather slow, and i personally don't blame VO .. more than likely your site is affecting others on the same server..

no punt intended.

okrogius 03-18-2003 10:57 AM

Actually Sebastian brought up an excellent point. I'm surprised VO hasn't kicked you for copyright infridgement off their servers.

AS faras if there's nothing to remove... just some random stuff from briefly looking over your forums:
-"hot" threads
-"total authorities"
-birthdays
-quick stats
-simular threads

and that's just without looking deep in the code or even seeing the query count for each page.

Gutspiller 03-18-2003 03:24 PM

If you would pay any attention to the news, then you would clearly see that I am linking to the other sites. Sh|t, don't you guys know how linking to news works? It's like a news hub that links you to all gaming news that's happening that day. We rarely copy their entire news thing, and if we do it's because it was very small and we still provide a link to their site. If you want in-house news, we have a completely other site for that. ( http://www.Ownt.com )

Don't come into my thread and tell me "you are stealing stuff", just answer the question I asked, or don't reply. :p

okrogius 03-18-2003 08:50 PM

Just commenting on some things another member has said ;). And while giving links to toher sites are summarizing stories may be fine, direct copying may not be. An analogy may be that just because I put up a sign "this aston martin is owned by alfred b. charles" on my neighor's car, odens't give me the right to just take it. Don't take this is a criticism but rather as an honest advice that you shoudl be carefull over how you use any content that doesn't belong to you.

As always, no harm meant. :)

I do recommend racknine - I use them myself. :) Tell Matt or Kevin that Erwin from vB.org sent you. I don't work for them, nor do I get commissions - I just happen to know Matt, the CEO. :)

Erwin, do you happen to have your own forum or website hosted with them that I could take a look at? If it's a big site and all? I just want to see the loading speed on somebody hosted with them. Course I guess it wouldn't matter if the site was on a dedicated, since I don't really want to compare that since I'm not getting a dedicated.

As for linking to other sites, I understand you guys were just commenting. I just sometimes get mad that people are soo uptight about "stealing". I think all the sites I link to are more than happy that we link to them. They fall into 2 catagories.

1. They are small and love links to their site where my users see there site and what they have to offer.

2. They are so big, they could care less if somebody is linking to a small news post here or there.

Like I said, if they are large news posts, I take half or less and provide a link to their news post. My users see the news, get a little taste of the news, but to get the full details on the news, they have to click the link.

I doubt I am doing anything illegal as far as "stealing" content. If I was, they would just need to contact me and I would never link to their site again. :)
