The Philosophy of Hanging out at Vbulletin.com and Vbulletin.org and even VBT

Another conversation starter. How do you feel about people who publish hacks or offer support on the Vbulletin boards but who do not provide a link to their own board?

I have always felt a mild distrust towards the people who do not proudly display their site because I see it as sort of their resume. If their board is buggy or bad, I am not as likely to have faith in code they release.

Now, I understand people have a variety of reasons for not publishing thier links and I am not asking anybody to defend that choice. This is just a conversation starter on people's perceptions about the more "secretive" board admins.

Perhaps it also has something to do with the fact that pirates seldom have links to their boards in their profiles. I know the permission system means that anybody releaseing hacks isn't a pirate now, but there is still a bit of distrust remaining.

Well sometimes it's the fact people register to someones board, just to pm the admin about a problem of a hack or something like.

i already had such users...

also some admins have a special group of customers and don't want to see theri board in public then..

all in all i don't care about making a board viewable by users or not :)

filburt1 03-16-2003 05:23 PM

I think little of people who don't link to their board in their profile, although I know of exceptions (ex: I know why Erwin doesn't have his).

Also there are license issues which I'm tired of discussing but are related to that www button.

amykhar 03-16-2003 05:30 PM

Xenon, I don't usually get people registereing to complain about my hacks. Instead, once in a blue moon somebody registers and asks me how to install somebody else's hack. A significant percentage of my incoming hits have always come from vbulletin sites. Of course, that percentage is much lower now that Google is bringing me so many visitors. (Bless you Filbert)

Amy

Xenon 03-16-2003 05:33 PM

well most of the time, the problems are because of they have missed something in the installfiles....

all in all my board is german, so i don't get that much users from vb.org or com sites ;)

amykhar 03-16-2003 05:37 PM

I actually used to read and speak German quite well. But once I learned Arabic, I started to forget my German. So you are safe from me Xenon ;)

I have to ask...what did Filburt help you do to attract Google users?

NTLDR 03-16-2003 06:26 PM

At the end of the day I can see why many users don't have links to there sites, it generates sign-ups for users who never intend to return. Also users of boards which cover controversial topics or are used within a private company or for members only.

At the end of the day, I'll check the code I'm adding for anything I don't like. Everyone has a right to privacy and many people probably want to keep there site seperate from anything they do here.

What doesn't Filburt do to help out his fellow vB community, especially when that community has a female representative? :p

amykhar 03-16-2003 06:28 PM

Boofo, he posted a simple template mod at the .com site that allowed google bots to crawl the forum. I added a wee bit of hacking to improve upon things and get quite a bit of google traffic now.

Amy

You wouldn't be willing to share what you added, would you? ;)

amykhar 03-16-2003 06:53 PM

If I can remember what I did, sure. I know I posted a fix for the online.php in his thread at the .com site. However, I also changed my tempate for multiple pages to make sure Google could get past the first page and I added a line to by .htaccess to make multiple pages work. I'll try to remember to PM the changes to you by tomorrow.

I have my site hidden for a reason. Simply i don't want to make it public.... not that its selling warez, distributing pornograhpy or posting offensive material.... simply because i would prefer it that way... I'll be changing my site URL though with the upcoming release of my web-design company. Then it will be public :D

But it has nearly 1 million posts, it would be quite hard to hide something that big...

Chris M 03-16-2003 07:16 PM

I know it:D

He showed me a screenshot of his board once, and forgot to edit out the url:D:p

But how many of those posts are from Mist? ;)

And Mist, when did you take the Porn down? I don't have the whole collection of Buella, the Wonder Goddess yet. :(

Chris Gwynne 03-16-2003 08:25 PM

Hmm, I think I've seen Mists board before, I'm not sure... :p

I'd rather display my board than not, as with what amy said, in regards to the quality of the coding etc. What's on display is a display of your talent and skills, and it shows your proud of your board, whether other people think so or not. :)

VampireMan 03-16-2003 09:01 PM

Ive only put my url once in public on this forum , and that was to be a demo for one of the hacks. I want to support the "community" as much as i can & try and offer help where i can.

Unfortunatly im not really proud of my forums yet. I dont feel that it's anywhere finished. Not because im not working on it , im doing that all the time.

Not only that , but i have a dedicated server to host it on , but share the bandwith with my customers & i dont want them to suffer cos im promoting my site too much.

To be honest i dont see even 1% of the vB community being a member on my forums. Well unless one of you lot is beccoming a bride2be ?

Also im really bad at gfx. but to show im doing "some" work. Take this one off plug and have a look.

http://www.in-here.co.uk (moderators/admin feel free to remove if im not supposed to post my url in this forum)

Chris

VampireMan 03-16-2003 09:08 PM

Oh .. and if i ever do get good enought to write a hack or 3 , then i suppose i would have to give my url for demo purposes .

Im studying hard .. not that any of it makes sense!

TheComputerGuy 03-17-2003 03:16 AM

I have always wanted to see Mist's board...but I respect his provacy and his choice.

But I think its whatever...I will plug my board in hopes of getting a viewing by someone that may take interest.

Velocd 03-17-2003 05:09 AM

I recal seeing your board Mist.. if memory serves right it was during Christmas and your site has a large banner with some rapper-looking guys wearing santa hats. I think I found it through Google ;)

Uh.. anyway, the reason I hang out here is cause (#1) I've been here over a year (#2) excellent community full of interesting people (#3) great resource for coding/web development (which just happen to be 2 of my biggest hobbies). To simply use this forum as a means for obtaining hacks but never posting is a waste of the full potential of the vBulletin license and why one would buy it.

WildVibes.net ? I think you're thinking of that, anyway that's Lesane's. :)

sabret00the 03-17-2003 11:09 AM

i'm like amy i like prefer to know what a hacker can do for himself before thinking about what he can do for me, but in the case of mist, especially being on the forum commenting section i think it's only right, more like his responsibility as the mod to display his board but :shrugs: what do i know

filburt1 03-17-2003 12:29 PM

Well my board ATM is unhacked and I have around five hacks released. It's just template mod'ed to death.

sabret00the 03-17-2003 01:50 PM

but you're version of template mods and your version of hacks are somewhat distorted IMO

but that's be going back to that other thread so lets not go there lol

Logician 03-18-2003 09:34 AM

I really don't care people here will visit my board or not but new member acceptance in my board is under moderation and I accept new members according to strict rules, moreover neither my site, nor the board (not even the templates) are in English, so clicking my www link would be lose of time for people here. That's why I took it off recently..
