The Philosophy of Hacking Discussions Continued - Hacks You Don't Release
 

Many of us have hacks that we don't release to the hacking community. Some of them are hacks that are too specific to our own forums to be of use to anybody else. Some of them are things we've done that we don't want to take the time to document and support. Others are things we have done that we want to remain unique on our own forums.

I have a few little things I have done that are Epinions-specific.
I didn't release my premium style hack for over a year out of laziness but finally decided it was time to contribute again.
I have one other hack I have had on my board from time to time that I know people want but I have mixed feelings about releasing it. My style and graphics skills are not the best; so if I want my board to have something special (besides the content) then I need to reserve some of my coding work.

So, what hacks haven't you shared and why?

I haven't shared HelperBot because I'd rather sell it. There's also major template mods, both functional and cosmetic, at WDF that make it unique that would betray WDF to sell.

I haven't released my custom Forum Admin/ Mod system - integrating warnings, suspension, normal banning, troll banning with automatic member notifications, integrated into our points system and private forums, also with automatic post suspensions, trashcan etc etc.. :) It's too specific like you say. Plus our points system is way too specific too.

I also have like a million small mini-hacks all over the place, which would not be beneficial to anyone else.

I have many custom hacks which some people have helped me with and some i have done through my own knowledge. But they are specific to our site. They wouldn't fit in on any other genre of site :)

Since my site sucks, there aren't too many hacks that I have that anyone would want. And my coding skills are that of a 2-year-old but I have a load of fun butchering up my site just to see how much of a mess I can make. I call it the mud-pie site.

I have made a few hacks that are specific to DarkBlazes...I guess some of them are too unique to be seen everywhere;)

I used to have my own custom title system which I never released, I had alot of help with it though but vB default made it not needed.

I've made hundreds of little modifications that are specific to my forum, I could release them but I'm too lazy to sift through my code and change it to work on someone else's vB.

hmm, some avatar hacks and other little modifications.
most of the time i'm just to lazy, or too much files are affected to release it...

The only hacks I do not release are either so small or too specific. :)

I recently made a new hack for a new project going to happen @ DarkBlazes, but I don't know whether I should release it or not...

What do you think? It isn't entirely finished, as it is part of a major RPG system I am hoping to code:)

Amy, did I tell you? Sucks big time! But I like it like that. No expectations that way. ;) And if you have any good ideas (or bad ones even), I'm all ears.

It doesn't suck. And I had to go see what I was missing by not being logged in :D You should try that tactic more often. It works ;)

LOL @ Amy. That really wasn't my intention, believe it or not. I just have no problem admitting my limitations. The site is mostly for learning and fun, more than anything else. I do have a pretty good jokes and anecdotes section, though. That's why I have "The place to be when you have no where else to go" in the title bar of the main page. ;)

A majority of hacks I have installed are either just tiny mod's and some specific hacks that I've not really bothered to integrate properly untill vB3 is released. Alot of the hacks I have are specific to my board for certain things, like specific avatars for specific users in specific threads. I also have my new portal almost ready which will probably only be used on a couple of sites.

I'd be interested in the Portal if I can get on the "few sites" listing. ;)

@ hellsatan - The rent really isn't that bad compared to the rest of the vb sites. I calculated yours on a sliding scale, remember? (Although the scale slides upwards for you, it still slides). ;)

I'm on my third and final one. The first one was when I was first in the U.S. Army (and I was too young), the second was right after I got back from Nam (and I didn't care) and this one that took me over 40 years to find. ;)

Mental pictures I have of you guys are never accurate are they? In my head, Boofo was 17 years old.

That's not a very good message board that can't handle that. I thought vBulletin was up to the challenge. If my wife can handle it, you would think a bunch of code could breeze right through it. ;)
